If your child walked early are they very 'physical' now?

Like sporty?
Was talking to friends at school about DS2 cruising and how the other two were nowhere near this stage at this age and a couple of them had 9-month walkers. These children are also very physical now, always win on sports day, good dancers etc
Coincidence?

I was a very early walker - and the least sporty person i know!

tigermeow · 28/11/2008 15:55

DD walked at 8months. Now at 3.5yrs she still asks to be carried, runs like a funny looking duck but recently got her 50meter swim badge. She rode her 2 wheeler (with training wheels) early (26months) but she would rather sit and draw or do whatever than do anything sporty!

chipmunkswhereareyou · 28/11/2008 22:02

When you all say 'walked' do you mean supported i.e. cruising or unsupported walking? I'm a bit at the implication that walking at 12months isn't early?

Lizzylou · 28/11/2008 22:08

DS1 walked at 11mths and is only 4.9yrs now, but is very active. He doesn't walk anywhere, he runs/skips/jumps he climbs constantly.

morocco · 28/11/2008 22:08

thought walking at 12 months was about average?
my ds' walked at 9 months and 10 months and are both v active and sporty
dd1 walked at 13 months and is also very active and sporty so perhaps it's just a genetic thing? not that I've got the 'active sporty' gene lol

mygreatauntgriselda · 28/11/2008 22:09

LOL at "like a funny looking duck"

DD walked at 9 months and by 10months was dancing and doing bum-slides across the floor to entertain people

Now at 5 she never keeps still but I have no idea whether she is a gymnast/dancer a I am far too mean to pay for lessons

FairyMum · 28/11/2008 22:11

DS1 walked at 9 months and is not physical at all. He was a ridiculously early crawler and early walker too, but is very clumsy and at the age of 7 still more likely to fall over than the baby in the house. He hates sports too.

SlubberOverTheYardArm · 28/11/2008 22:21

No.

dd1 (now 4.5) walked @ 9.5 months and in not a particularly sporty or athletic child.

I wonder if there is a link with tenacity though. She was SO bloody minded about moving, from rolling, to crawling to cruising to walking, she never let up. (drove me UP THE WALL) always covered in bruises.

She is still very much like that now, but with academic things.

So now she wants to read, and to write and is working away at it contantly. She would rather write little letters of gibberish to me, than watch the telly. All v unnatural

I think her early walking is a sign of sheer bloody mindedness rather than physical prowess.

AuntyVi · 29/11/2008 19:36

We all walked fairly early apparently but are not majorly sporty, musical yes but I think that was more because we had a lot of music around us from a young age, would be surprised if it links to walking.
My mum claims that it is linked to size/weight though, she says it is easier to learn to walk if you are small and light - that could be true as we were all tiny babies. She isn't a professional or anything but grew up with looooads of kids so this is based on her experience.

christywhisty · 29/11/2008 20:12

My ds, was far from light and small when he started walking at 10 mos. He was a sturdy baby. My DD was a petite little thing and walked at 13 months.

Themasterandmargaritas · 30/11/2008 16:41

Yes. Ds1 walked at 7 months and now at 4.5 is the fastest runner in his year at school and very physical and energetic, with a good sense of balance, riding his bike without stabilisers when he was 3.

bigTillyMint · 30/11/2008 16:47

DD walked at 10mths, and is good at swimming, gymnastics, ice-skating - more my strengths

DS walked at 12(?)mths and is very good at pretty much all sports like his daddy!

Piffle · 30/11/2008 16:49

ds1 walked at 9 mths. Now nearly 15yrs. He walks to school and back 1mile each way. Does paper round.
Aside from that the word sloth would accurately describe him. He is a genius academically though.
Now ds2 walked at 10mths and 20mths now. He is astoundingly physical and all things point to him being sporty.

muminthecity · 30/11/2008 19:19

DD was cruising at 7 months and walking by 9 months, she is only 3.3 now but very physical, loves climbing and jumping from great heights (which is why she currently has her arm in a plaster cast!) and is great at ball games, she can kick a ball really far and has much better aim than me . Very good at throwing and catching as well. Will be interesting to see if this continues as she gets older.

belgo · 30/11/2008 19:21

Yes. DD1 could walk very well by age 10 months, and she could hop and do roly polies very early as well. She's now nearly five and is very strong, very flexible and has an excellent sense of balance - a real little gymnast.

PeachyAndTheSucklingBas · 30/11/2008 19:23

DS4 is cruising too, but as ds1 walked at 10 months and ds2 11 am not overly surprised.

DS1 is exceptionally physical and excellent at gym etc. DS2 is a lazy so-and-so.

muppetgirl · 30/11/2008 19:28

this is an interesting thread...

ds 1 was an average walker at 12 months but then became the most excellent climber and strong boy. He, at just under 2, moved his bedside cabinet from beside his bed over to the stairgate at his door and climbed over. He used his chest of drawers as a staircase (1st drawer fully out, next not quite so, next again just out) so he could climb up on top and reach his shelves. He's 4.8 now and a good swimmer, learning tennis and has a good backhand/forehand. Not a wonderful runner but can walk miles and miles and could do from a very early age.

ds 2 couldn't be more different. He's 13 months and doesn't crawl let alone walk. He doesn't have the inclination at the moment.

Cathpot · 30/11/2008 19:41

DD1 was walking by 9 months, rode a bike without stabilisers by 2, swam unaided by 3. Has always been very.. busy.

DD2 walked about 10 or 11 months and is much less dramatically physical. I wonder how much of it is because she is the second child. I cant take 2 kids swimming on my own so she's had alot less time in the pool, my DH has two kids to supervise on bikes so she gets less 'pushing' (ditto with the whole walking early- no way was I pushing DD2 to get moving, a lesson learned).

I also think that whatever is going on now, by the time they are teanagers it will all come down to attitude, I have always been quite physically strong and I like out door stuff and love swimming etc but I am (and was then), fundamentally far too lazy to take any sporty skill and be more than OK at it. DH simiarly has a talent for swimming and sailing which he could have taken on to a professional level, but again when it came to it not enough commitment.

So. We may well have gifted out children strong bodies and the lack of willpower to get off their backsides and use them...

Ineedajob · 18/04/2012 09:44

DS walked at 12 months and is a talented sportsman (normally modest mummy but this is my contribution to MN science :)

pictish · 18/04/2012 09:46

No - dd walked the earliest at 10 months and she is a lazy cah.

insancerre · 18/04/2012 09:50

DS walked at 10 months and was always into hs sports at school, football mostly.
DD walked at 13 months and hates sport and PE (like me)

However, DD was much better at talking than DS (still is).
I wonder if early walker = late talker ?

DeWe · 18/04/2012 11:11

Hmm:
DD1 walked at 15 months, not terribly physical although does various dance. Talked early, very musical. Was singing in tune before she walked.

Dd2 walked early, about 9 months. Much more physical, although restricted by only having one hand in what she can do. Not as musical, but very early talker-she was in full sentences before 18 months.

Ds walked initially at 10 months, but usually chose to crawl (you just can't walk and push a car) until about 15/16 months. He could walk if he had to just didn't choose. Very physical, often commented on that he has natural sporting ability. I think will be pretty musical, he's always loved music from a tiny age, and was singing in tune very early too. Speech not as good, although probably due to glue ear as his speech improved dramatically in the month after he had grommets fitted.

shushpenfold · 18/04/2012 11:12

Nope - all 3 of min walked between 10m and 12m and they're totally different.
