Toddler escaping from baby sleeping bag!

Much to his amusement, 18mo ds has suddenly learnt to undo poppers on shoulders of his Grobag and pull it down to enable him to escape! Another trick is getting one arm inside the grobag but then he can't get it out! Does anyone have any tips or is this the beginning of the end for the baby sleeping bag?!! TIA

Hi there,

We've noticed this thread is a little old and some of the product recommendations are out of date. If you're looking for a baby sleeping bag that toddlers are less likely to undo themselves, take a look at our list of the best baby sleeping bags available right now.

Hope that helps,

You need the Grobag with no poppers but a zip up the front instead. You have to put their arms through the holes which is a bit tricky sometimes, but they can't get out of them! (Yet, our DTs started this trick a few months ago, we have been 2 mths on the new bags and no escapes yet!!)

Thanks penona, he used to have the zip one before he went into the next size, I should have guessed the poppers would mean trouble!

my dd1 could get out of her sleeping bag/gro bag at this age, so I just gave up on it.

The only reason we have persisted with the sleepbags is cos winter is coming and they always wake when cold!! Not sure how you ensure that blankets stay on? If they learn how to get out of the zips though we're doomed!

ElenorRigby · 22/11/2008 11:03

our 15 month old worked out how to get out of sleeping bags with poppers months back. All her sleeping bags have zips now!

Tapster · 22/11/2008 11:04

They can undo the zip ones, my DD started doing this - the next stage a couple of days later was to climb out of the cot. You can put the zip ones on backwards. Also I had hysterical toddler tantrums trying to put her in her grobag at the same stage. I moved her to a bed at 22 months as a result.

vests, warm pjs, cardigans, that's how I make sure my children stay warm in the winter months (like we did before gro bags were invented). And if they are cold, they soon learn that a blanket keeps them warm.

ElenorRigby · 22/11/2008 11:13

lol tapster she tried to climb out now and has in the last couple of weeks managed to pull one of her cot bars off, the little perisher!

sazzerbear · 22/11/2008 12:07

When they get to duvet stage, i've heard it's a good idea to buy a single duvet and put it horizontally across the bed, tucking it under the mattress either side, any experiences?

Our DD escaped at that age too so we only did the zip ones.. and zip at the back. But then she hated it!
She has been sleeping in a bed before 2yrs old because of escaping the cot...
And when she was about 3yrs old, she asked to go back in a zip bag...she loves the comfort of it, but a bit of a tricky one when she needs to pee at night! SHe is now 3.4yrs, I bought 2 different grobags 3-6yrs old... Perfect!

nelix2000 · 24/11/2008 10:03

I think your title says it all...Toddler escaping baby gro bag....too old for it maybe? my ds was the same..he is now in a grobag duvet set in a cot bed, has been since 18 months lol...we call him hudini as he gets out of all sorts!

mrsgboring · 24/11/2008 10:13

He's surely escaping because he doesn't want it on him? Try something like an all in one warm pyjama thing instead - he might want to be able to move and thrash his legs (DS likes to do this)

nappyaddict · 24/11/2008 10:39

put it on inside out.

Madsometimes · 24/11/2008 11:33

dd1 escaped from her grobag at about 15 months, and it was time for her to use a duvet. She was ready to let it go, but it was hard for me.

A duvet is fine for an 18 month year old, but make sure it has a very low tog rating. A lightweight cot or cotbed duvet can easily be purchased at mothercare or similar. My 5 year old is still using her cotbed so we have got good use of the little duvet (bought 7 years ago).

katiechops · 24/11/2008 11:39

When we'd had enough of DD escaping from her grobag (one with poppers, one with zip) about two months before her second birthday, we bought her a cot duvet. She abosultely loves snuggling up under it and has learnt that she can kick it off if she gets too hot and needs to put it back if she gets cold.

Ikea do a good low tog one for about £8 and nice duvet covers for about the same price.

NellyTheElephant · 24/11/2008 18:34

DD2 is 21 months. I gave up on the grobags about 2 months ago and we took the sides off her cot too (a climber and escape artist!!) She was initially fine with a duvet, (a cotbed sized one), loves getting into bed hersef and snuggling under it, but suddenly now it's cold we had a couple of nights when she woke 4am crying and cold having thrown off her covers. I now put a couple of vests under her PJs and also tuck a BIG blanket over the duvet and right under the matress - there is no kicking it off by accident - and she immediately slept through again.

She so loves being able to get in and out of bed on her own and is MUCH happier than in the growbag (DD1 was v happy in grobag until 2 and a half and I then had to fight her out of it as she still wanted it - so they are all different)

My little wriggler started escaping from her swaddle at 2 days old...I had to give up on grobags at 8 months! I now have fleecy walk in sleepers with arms and legs. Much better.

sazzerbear · 05/12/2008 13:54

What age do they go up to? tia!
