4 month old can almost sit up - rocker now obselete.... What next?

My LO is now 4 months old and had a nasty incident with his rocker yesterday. He has recently taken to launching himself forwards in an attempt to sit up and did so whilst strapped into his rocker causing it to almost flip forwards with him half in half out of it. He thought it was hilarious but I have not left him in his rocker since. I know you are not meant to leave them in there on their own but I had literally gone into the cupboard and when I turned round, saw him almost flip the thing over.

Anyway, what the he!! do I put him in now for entertainment? He hates his Bumbo and almost bends in half trying to escape from it, his baby gym means he lies flat which he no longer likes to do for more than 10 secs. OH HATES door bouncers/swings so they are out of the question now.

Any suggestions? I have heard of Baby Einstein things they can kind of stand - anything like this???

THanks for any advice. His rocker was so good - it totally reclines so he would nap in it and liked to watch me eat my lunch sitting in his rocker but now he is just all go all the time and I cant get anything done. GOing to the loo is almost impossible at the mo!!!

Thanks guys

one of those blow up ring things? that have fabric on and kind of soft things for them to grab?

FrannyandZooey · 10/07/2008 14:38

like this?
I don't know if that would be suitable, my ds eschewed all bouncy chairs etc and screamed as if they were the devil's work

pinkglittermags · 10/07/2008 15:24

My son is similar, he is 4 months tomorrow,
I am ordering a Fisher Price Hop and Pop to see if that entertains him. It is like a walker but it stays in one place, see the link below.
Hope this helps

I ended up using the car seat with baby arch over and a baby rocker/walker car seat for obvious reasons because of the full harness

CJMommy · 10/07/2008 15:34

Have got a fisher price Learn and Groove which DS loves (6 months). brought it off ebay as £80 brand new !!!Also got one of the blow-up inflatable rings which keeps him entertained for minutes on end

thelittlestbadger · 10/07/2008 15:36

Breast feeding cushion can support them (the horseshoe shaped ones). Otherwise, I ended up sitting on the floor with DD sat between my legs while she played and I read played with her

nappyaddict · 10/07/2008 15:39

does he like lying on his tummy? i used to lie ds on his tummy under his play mat with a breastfeeding cushion for support.

witchandchips · 10/07/2008 15:45

cushions on floor and loads of stuff to fiddle with.

mamamufin · 10/07/2008 16:05

I ended up using a small buggy in the house so I could stap ds in it and put it in front of tv [BLUSH]. But just to run the loo or do ten mins of ironing.

violetsmile · 10/07/2008 21:12

Have you tried a Bumbo? They are good if your lo like to sit up but is unable to do it alone.

I also laid my ds on a play mat a lot at this age as he had just learned to roll and was quite happy for short stints rolling and kicking around with a few toys to hand.

Also, argos used to do an inflatable chair with a small table attached to it which had toys on it.

I am selling one on ebay at the minute, it's called the cotoons inflatable activity chair. I'm not sure if argos still do them,

they are very good as your lo gets bigger and able to sit up but they support them incase they flop!

violetsmile · 10/07/2008 21:13

Sorry just saw he hated his bumbo! My ds did too! Strange!

violetsmile · 10/07/2008 21:14

The fisher price Jumparoo is good and allows them to stand and fiddle with all the toys and activities on them but they are stationery so they can't hurt themselves.

domesticslattern · 10/07/2008 21:19

Lying on his tummy more might work?- mine hated it but started liking it around 4 months for some reason. Or propped up in the V of a long cushion?

We have one of those fabric covered blow up doughnut rings and it is a bit of a disappointment TBH- constantly deflating a bit so DD slips down and complains loudly. I spend my life blowing it up.

Thinkstoomuch · 10/07/2008 21:19

The Baby Bjorn 123 Sitter is a good chair they can use right up until toddler size. I'm pretty sure it's 'unflippable'. My DS2 is 4 months and almost sitting too, but isn't able to launch himself out of the Baby Bjorn.

elmoandella · 10/07/2008 21:36

we had jumparoo. it's fab.

could get a walker that has the bit to keep their feet off the ground.

there's also a couple of chairs that are supposed to last until toddler stage. and ones with 5 point harness.

DoubleBluff · 10/07/2008 21:41

one of those play nest ring things.

DoubleBluff · 10/07/2008 21:42

or one of those door bouncers, mine loved that

We have a Jumperoo and its great! She loves it, shrieks with delight when put in and keeps her safe while I get myself some lunch or go to the loo now she is crawling all over. Sadly she is growing out of it and it will be a sad day when it has to be put away.

They are expensive but go for almost new price on ebay so you can make your money back when LO grows out of it.

chloemegjess · 10/07/2008 21:53

My DD is 6 months and is too active for her chair at the mo (its a birth to toddler rocker, so hoping to get some more use out of it at some point).

She uses her play nest alot BUT she can now climb out of it.

Fisher price jumperoo and similar are great

Also a bouncer that hangs from the door

I also have a playpen for the times I need to put DD down for 5 mins while I go to the loo etc.

uptomyeyes · 10/07/2008 21:55

My children soon got the hang of hurling themselves backwards out of a GALT babynest. Feet against the opposite cushion bend knees straighten quickly whilst arching your back...and wahay you are head first on the floor next to the baby nest.

MabelMay · 10/07/2008 22:15

Fisher Price Learn and Groove life saver for me with both my DSs when they were this age.

MrsCravendale · 11/07/2008 11:57

Thanks for all the advice.
Since OH hates door bouncers, I've had a look at the Learn and Groove thingy...
Looks brilliant!!!
Will have to consult with our bank manager for a loan to buy it heh heh.

Thanks again....

Can I ask why your OH hates door bouncers? If it's cos they are meant to be bad for babies then the same arguments against them will apply to walkers, and things like the hop n pop and learn n groove.

chloemegjess · 11/07/2008 21:12

I thought the learn and grove was leapfrog rather than fisher price? And the fisher price one is the jumperoo?
