4 month old can almost sit up - rocker now obselete.... What next?

My LO is now 4 months old and had a nasty incident with his rocker yesterday. He has recently taken to launching himself forwards in an attempt to sit up and did so whilst strapped into his rocker causing it to almost flip forwards with him half in half out of it. He thought it was hilarious but I have not left him in his rocker since. I know you are not meant to leave them in there on their own but I had literally gone into the cupboard and when I turned round, saw him almost flip the thing over.

Anyway, what the he!! do I put him in now for entertainment? He hates his Bumbo and almost bends in half trying to escape from it, his baby gym means he lies flat which he no longer likes to do for more than 10 secs. OH HATES door bouncers/swings so they are out of the question now.

Any suggestions? I have heard of Baby Einstein things they can kind of stand - anything like this???

THanks for any advice. His rocker was so good - it totally reclines so he would nap in it and liked to watch me eat my lunch sitting in his rocker but now he is just all go all the time and I cant get anything done. GOing to the loo is almost impossible at the mo!!!

Thanks guys

M y son had this its brilliant....he is 1.7 now and still uses it but as a seat! it has a kick stand that stops them lunging it forward and converts to a cool reading seat as they get older so value for money!

Another one with an escapologist here. We got the Baby Einstein one on eBay for £40 and have used it from 4months. We also have the Baby Bjorn chair, another eBay purchase, and he hasn't come out of it yet.

MamaChris · 12/07/2008 11:38

highchair? ds always hated bouncer. tolerates bumbo but tries to escape. we got a £15 highchair from ikea and he loves it. sits happily for 20 mins at a time with a highchair toy (suctioned to tray so he can't knock it off). think he likes being high up and having a good view.

leapfrog learn and groove

door bouncer

bumbo

circulate baby around + happiness for all !

PS MamaChris - where did you find a suction high chair toy that they can't pull off - I need to know!

MamaChris · 12/07/2008 11:50

ebay

bought a selection and some were better than others. it's not completely un-pull-off-able, but if you push it down good and proper in the middle, and position it at the far corner of the tray (so he can't get a good two-handed grip of it), it'll last at least 15 mins.

or maybe he's still practising that skill and we have more trouble to come

i vote blow up baby nest thingy, with stuff to pull at/grab/ squeak attached to it and some absorbing toys in it. he will be able to get out of it by about six months so will only give you a bit of respite but by the sounds of it he will no doubt be crawling by then anyway!

moocowme · 12/07/2008 20:35

my ds found his bumbo to restricting as he liked to kick his legs a lot at that age so I made him a bean bag (only in it if closely supervised!) and this did the trick for a few months as he was able to sit up more which he wanted but also freed his legs up.

at about 5months he was learning to sit so i made him a foam chair with some bits from dunelm mill and made a cover. this worked really well for a couple more months until he could sit unaided.

you may find you need to try a few differnt things to find what works for your DS. I used to take mine to baby shops to try stuff out.

try using one of theese

We had one and it was excellent. Very sturdy
Keeps the baby ocupied if you need to do the washing up.

The only problem is that all the toys make noise you can turn them off but then the baby doesen't enjoy the toy as much.

lisalollipop · 26/04/2009 20:41

DS used to lean over sideways to bite the screws on the frame of the bouncy chair and clonk his fat head on the floor!

So I just used the carseat. Ours is a Maxi Cosi that has the rocking option so no different to the bouncy chair but safer as it has the harness. You can still prop arch toys over it from a playmat. Even if you end up buying another option you can at least use the carseat for now.

MrsMattie · 26/04/2009 20:44

We have a MP& highchair that has a padded seat and straps for babies who can almost-but-not-quite sit up unaided. DD has been in that for the last few weeks after almost turning her bouncer chair over by lurching forward.

HarryB · 26/04/2009 20:45

Good thread that I'll be taking tips from as DS hates his bumbo too as he can't kick his legs. Another 30 odd quid down the drain.

mejon · 26/04/2009 20:48

BabyBjorn 123 - DD has only just stopped using hers at 2.7 (and I sold it on ebay for almost as much as I paid for it 2 years ago!). Unflippable as far as DD was concerned (and she used to love bouncing up and down on it face-down by toddler age - though I doubt whether that's really recommended!!)

nappyaddict · 27/04/2009 11:17

Sorry to hijack but MRSMATTIE just saw on a different thread you thought the Jane Carrera was shite. What didn't you like about it?

moosemama · 27/04/2009 11:41

We tend to move dd around a lot to keep her interested and stimulated. She has a baby gym, which she still likes but not as much as she used to. A graco silhouette swing, which she loves. A playmat for tummy time and finally a mamas and papas prima pappa highchair (which I think has recently changed its name) that reclines and goes from low to high chair. The only thing about the high chair is that the table is too high for her to reach so its no good for suction high chair toys, she doesn't seem to care though, we just give her a few toys on her lap and it is currently her favourite place.
