Help! My son just ate cat sick

Well I think he did. I was playing with his sister and he was happily playing with his back to me. Then he turned round to smile and I realised he had been playing with some cat sick, it was all up his arms and round his mouth. I have no idea whether he actually ate it but since it was right around his mouth I assume he did. Plus he looked jolly pleased with himself, as he does when eating pebbles/dirt/newspaper/fluff/anything he is not supposed to eat.

What should I do? I have given him his bottle and he seems OK, no more sicky than usual. He is 12 mths old.

(And yes I know some of you probably have strong feelings about cats and babies but I have 2 of each and they all seem very happy together most of time.....)

better than if it were cat pooh.

best just have a check if there were any worms in the sick though.

lottiejenkins · 25/06/2008 10:14

Ewwwwwwwwwwww poor old you,,, why dont you ring the health visitor for some advice and see what she says?... cats are renowned for eating horrible things...

penona · 25/06/2008 10:19

I think it was just a hairball, it looked like it. They get wormed regularly and the bit that was left looked OK. (I cannot believe I am discussing cat sick!!!)
My HV is quite horrified that i have cats and already told me they should be kept well apart from the children at all times, so I don't think she'd be very sympathetic!

Babies eh? They do such gross things (I once caught him trying to eat his sisters poo in the bath....)

Don't stress too much, just keep an eye on him for the next day or so. Maybe call your practice nurse or GP and ask if you need to get a sample from him to check for any nasties.

Do not call your HV, she sounds daft! (Yes, I have a cat too.)

Mainly though, don't worry. Just remind him when he's 18 and has a stinking hangover, that once he ate cat sick, and watch him turn even greener!

katw3kitts · 25/06/2008 10:24

But don't cats eat their own sick ?

My DS drank water from out of the guinea pigs bottle once. Yuck.

TeeBee · 25/06/2008 10:45

My 3-year old licked a snail yesterday! Still alive...so far.

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 25/06/2008 10:48

I found my 1 year old vegetarian DD with her face in the cat food bowl once. To add insult to injury, when I put my finger in her mouth to remove the remaining cat food she bit me really hard, down to the bone.

Suffice to say she lived and we're no longer vegetarian!

I'm sure your DS will be fine.

louii · 25/06/2008 10:49

The snail or 3 year old??

how did he get into contact with cat sick at 12m? I would call the doctors and get some advice if I were you that is really hazardous and disgusting.

TeeBee · 25/06/2008 10:58

Ha, ha Louii, no snail is alive long in my garden as soon as I learn of its presence!

krang · 25/06/2008 14:50

This happened to me when DS was a year old!

I had to go to the vets the next day so I asked him if it was dangerous. He howled with laughter and said as long as you make sure cats are regularly wormed it's no problem.

Appeared to have no effect on DS whatsoever - he is now two and a half and is never ill...

(By the way, janitor and crush, cats are very good at being sick very quietly and discreetly, usually in clever places where babies crawl and adults don't see, such as under tables and on dark brown wooden floors. I'm fairly sure that none of us cat owners happily ignore cat sick or serve it up to our babies as a tasty alternative to Cow&Gate)

CrushWithEyeliner · 25/06/2008 19:12

Well I am sure they shit in discreet places too but surely you would clean it up before your kids came into contact.

I just thought you would smell it if your cat was sick in your house.

krang · 25/06/2008 19:26

Sigh. No, it doesn't smell and no, you can't always clean it up before your kids come into contact with it. Because, as I said, cats tend to do it in places where you don't notice. Of course you clean it up as soon as you see it. But you don't always see it, as I have explained.

I daresay there are those who spend every moment of every day frantically scanning the floor for any trace of anything their kids shouldn't put in their mouths, and who have never, ever not noticed something potentially unhygienic. Sadly, I am not one of them.

(DS managed to eat his own shit when he was around nine months, so I am probably a bit blase about this, to be fair.)

LilRedWG · 25/06/2008 19:27

I agree - cat sick doesn't smell unless they've been drinking milk.

krang · 25/06/2008 19:30

Bleurgh, no milk for my cats. Iams dried food all the way. At least it looks and smells more or less the same before and after it's been in their stomachs.

CrushWithEyeliner · 25/06/2008 19:35

I guess everyone is different. I don't frantically scan the floor for traces of things but I can sincerely say I wouldn't have animal shit or sick on my floor with my kids around.

nzshar · 25/06/2008 20:14

LOL crush such a perfect mother. Ds has eaten bot dried cat food and cat sick. He still lives till this day as a healthy 4 year old. If it was cat/dog shit then I would have been more worried (worms etc)When cats are sick 9 times out of ten it is hairballs and hasn't had enough time in the stomach to digest properly anyhow. There are worse things in life to worry about IMHO

nzshar · 25/06/2008 20:14

eaten both that was supposed to read

izyboy · 25/06/2008 20:31

I am pretty fastIdious - but the cat mutilates voles and brings them in. I cannot be sure that my dd wouldn't get to the carcass without me seeing it first! That's just the way it is folks!!!

kbaby · 26/06/2008 14:02

And I though DS sucking the dirt off a worm was gross

katw3kitts · 26/06/2008 14:12

Did you have to say that Kbaby ?

I feel all kind of squeazy now.

Sarahellis · 26/06/2008 14:27

[grin} lol
Thank you so much for making me smile today!

This is gross but also amusing, and good ammo for when they turn 18 as mentioned.

My Daughter who is now 3.6 is constantly finding ways to reach the cat food which I am forever putting out of her reach (so I think)
She has also eaten her own poo and and is still alive to this day!!
As long as your cats are wormed and vaccinated and well cared for your babies will be fine.
There are definately worse things in life to worry about!
Now if you had said he had eaten bleach..........!!!!!

Blandmum · 26/06/2008 14:29

How wonderful, baby led weaning.......

kbaby · 26/06/2008 14:58

The worm wasnt as bad as when I found him eating green algae from out of a parasol base hole. Now that really was gross.
