My DD, 11 weeks old, has turned into a crazy crying machine over the last 4 days. It's come completely from the left field, she's been a very chilled and content little thing until now.

I think she may be teething - does this cause this sort of behaviour? Is this normal? Have I just been lucky to date and this should be expected?

I feel like I must be missing something, sometimes she is completely inconsolable for no apparent reason and she is also drinking less milk than usual. She had been having 5x 5/6oz bottles and is now on about 4x 4oz bottles. It's really tough her being so upset all of the time.

Desperate bump. We're approaching 40 mins of screaming now...

Hmm, when I started reading I thought she might be having a growth spurt, but that normally makes them drink more rather than less.

Does she pull her knees up to her tummy? She could be coliccy.

Our DS often settled if we carried him like a little airplane, if that makes any sense. On his tummy, his head at my elbow, hand on his tummy. I think the warmth of a hand on his tummy helped.

Is she pooing and weeing regularly?

Quattrocento · 31/05/2008 20:10

Unlikely to be teething at 11 weeks

Think it sounds like colic

Is she burping properly?

ilovewashingnappies · 31/05/2008 20:11

Hmmmmm. was going to suggest growth spurt but hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

What are her nappies like?

I'd bet my life you are doing nothing wrong!

Wallace · 31/05/2008 20:11

Poor you! I wish I could help...

Don't think it sounds like teething, but you never can tell with babies.

She could be coming down with something, or it could just be a phase

Lot of help, me

ilovewashingnappies · 31/05/2008 20:12

Bad wind? move around to try to dislodge then keep still incase she just wants to chill out....

LaVieEnRose · 31/05/2008 20:26

my ds started teething at about 10 weeks.is she drooling a lot? pulling at her gums at all? has she had quite runny poos? well runnier than normal! Are her cheeks red? If you think she might be teething give her calpol, you can use that from 2 months.

LaVieEnRose · 31/05/2008 20:26

Of course, sometimes they just like to scream.....

megandtyler · 31/05/2008 20:28

my ds (5 weeks)has been miso all day try some cooled boiled water.
also lie her on her tummy on your lap and wind her that way.I find it calms ds down.

MabelMay · 31/05/2008 20:32

Possibly reflux?
It can start at around 2 to 3 months of age. It did with my ds2 anyway and I've heard this is a common age for symptoms to start...

Does she tend to scream after a feed? Does she seem uncomfortable/unhappy feeding?

MissingMyHeels · 31/05/2008 20:54

She has reflux but that is under control with Gaviscon and her screaming doesn't seem to be feed related. The reason I suspect teeth is dribbling, spitting dummy in favour of fingers, dribble and rolling bottle teat around with her gums but it's very possible I am wrong.

Nappies fine, she doesn't want to go to anyone but me, even DP. Maybe she is just in a screaming mood - just wanted to check I wasn't missing an obvious developmental thing that happens to all 11 week old babies IYSWIM?

Just chucked her in the bath and she has chilled out a bit. Now I need a bath and bottle glass of wine.

cory · 31/05/2008 21:48

Trush? That could be making her mouth sore, couldn't it? Or am I thinking of something else?

megandtyler · 31/05/2008 21:53

no you're right thrush can make their mouths and tongues quite sore.Thats's a right pain in the arse though it took weeks for dd's to clear but pain stopped quickly with medication.

mckenzie · 01/06/2008 08:46

how is your DD this morning MMH? Did she settle after her bath?

MissingMyHeels · 03/06/2008 00:18

She did settle after bath but still doesn't seem right. I just can't put my finger on what is wrong, I am being really paranoid, she has a few spots and I have convinced myself it's chicken pox

Going to take her to baby clinic tomorrow and I hope I see the normal nice HV!

Oh you poor thing. My DS2 did all this at 9-10 weeks. Screamed constantly. It was colic, and Dentinox worked fab, but my best tip has to be Gripe Water, it is magical. If you haven't got any, you can try giving a teaspoon of boiled water.

Could he be overtired? I bet you are!

BEAUTlFUL · 03/06/2008 00:28

Sorry to call your daughter "he".

MissingMyHeels · 03/06/2008 00:32

No worries! I have some gripe water but not used it yet. Will give it a try. She does get overtired but a swaddle and walk about seems to settle her when it's that.

I am def overtired, bed for me now!

OP posts:
Kindersurprise · 03/06/2008 00:39

Good idea to go to the HV, trust your instincts. Hope she is ok and that you both have a good nights sleep.

BEAUTlFUL · 03/06/2008 00:46

The gripe water is amazing, seriously. It helps break up trapped wind, and neutralises excess stomach acid. But it is rapid relief -- like, from screaming to calm in under a minute. Really.

Sometimes my DS2 gets into a crying jag in the afternoon, about 2pm. I strap him in his car seat, lift it up and swing it. That works instantly too, but Gripe Water is easier on the arms.

BEAUTlFUL · 03/06/2008 00:46

But yes, do take her to the HV or even the GP if you have that "Something's not right" feeling. Always listen to that.

hayley2u · 03/06/2008 00:54

you know reading your post my daughter is usualy realy placid but over the last week she s been screaming not drinking much know mydd older but i think my dd has hay feather as her nose is streaming, we went bark other day and she sobbed bless her.
id give her some calpol you can get some from 2 months, maybe some infocol thats really good and some gripe water that workdat treat if it is colic it stops it brilliant stuff
if she is just wingy i would try putting her down ore not running to her so quick very hard to do or just put dummy in and walk away if she s turning int to the hip child

MissingMyHeels · 03/06/2008 15:24

HV bloody useless, back to drawing board!

OP posts:
scattercushion · 03/06/2008 15:31

Did she say 'all babies are different'. That's all mine said - over and over like it was a mantra. No help at all!

bubblagirl · 03/06/2008 15:34

if in doubt rule things out if not windy ill sick try bonjela to rule out teething sometimes no other signs visable my ds turned into a crying machine i put corner of flannel in freezer rubbed it on his gums put dentinox and bonjela and he stopped

dentinox can be applied every 20 mins so if looking as if discomfort is coming back flannel then detinox

and last thing if that fails gripe water in case trapped wind

afraid at this age its a check list of possibles and working your way through it them dman teeth are normally the culprit though as no symptom is the same
