Sorry, I meant more, how does it manifest itself as post natal OCD. My sister has really bad OCD, has done her whol,e life. Just wondered how yours affects you and wanted to know a bit more about it really.

mumtobe2 · 03/05/2008 21:12

Just been doing some research . have suffered ocd before but not for some time.Just been diagnosed with anxiety disorder 4 months postnatal and put on medication. My problems involve obsessional thoughts that i cant get out of my head and find it hard to concentrate on anything else. Its bloody horrendous.Just wondered if anyone else suffered post natal ocd as it is apparently a recognized condition.Infact mine appeared during the end of the pregnancy.

have you been assessed?Any referrals or ongoing treatment?do you have a CPN/SW/psychiatrist.
could you talk to GP or HV

Thomcat · 03/05/2008 21:15

So the medication you are on now, it hasn't helped the OCD at all? What worked before when you had OCD?

scottishmummy · 03/05/2008 21:16

what about CBT

Before the birth i had became obsessive about things around the house like if i was decorating/painting i would obsess on imperfections in the room i was decorating.Sounds pathetic but it would keep me awake all night .Honestly you would think i had enough to think about!single mum dd1 13,dd2 on the way ,dog, worked full time and overtime till end of pregnancy. After the birth it manifests as thoughts around my baby.

do you have CPN or psychiatrist?could you get a CMHT referral

Thomcat · 03/05/2008 21:21

Nothing about OCD is pathetic. I do understand.
So when you had OCD before, did you have treatment. Anti-depressants can help a bit can't tehy?
Are you still single? Are you getting any support from anyone, not OCD support as such but support in general with children?

mumtobe2 · 03/05/2008 21:24

Hello Mum2be2 I was diagnosed with PPOCD a couple of weeks ago. My ds is 8 months now and I wish I could explain to you how much I understand how horrendous it is to have these thoughts in your head.

I have always had an element of OCD but after DS was born it got worse. About 4 weeks ago I pretty much had a nervous breakdown and the GP had to get the mental health crisis team out to me . Anyhow they refered me to the post natal mental health nurse who was/is fantastic. The GP prescibed me Fluoxetine 20mg to ease the thougths and anxiety and after about 3 weeks it really started to work and the thoughts are hardly there. Luckly I am able to afford CBT privately which is really helping.

I know how horrible it is to suffer with this so huge hugs to you. What meds are they starting you on. It was a huge comfort to me that my mental health nurse told me that if the fluoxetine didn't work they had something called olanzepine which I could take in a very small dose which is very effective for PPOCD.

I really really hope you get some relief soon.

Thomcat · 03/05/2008 21:28

Do you have help with the children?

Glad anxiety is being numbed by meds already.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2008 21:29

You are entitled to assessment and NHS is free at point of access, go back to GP, discuss what's being going on. if necessary write it down so you don't get side tracked or overwhelmed. CMHT have psychiatrist,CPN,OT and work to maintain individuals in their own home as far as possible

sherby · 03/05/2008 21:30

I was so suprised when I told other mums about this how many I knew that turned around and had suffered the same thing, it is quite common on the spectrum of PND.

mumtobe2 · 03/05/2008 21:30

Yes they have helped take the edge off it when ive had them before .The first episodes i had which started in my teens i didnt have medication for.It was less recognized then and didnt really know what it was just that it was bloody painful. No real support just babys dad comes to stay about twice a month(lives 70 moiles away)but we arent together. No other family or friends help.

mumtobe2 · 03/05/2008 21:37

Yes not as widely recognized as straight pnd sherby is it but have sort of self diagnozed.Had the thoughts since birth and managed them for a while but then "confessed "to health visitor couple weeks ago and pretty much snowballed since then.Dont really have compulsions anymore apart from trying to reassure myself as cant really tell anyone what they are a lot of time to embarrassed/ashamed.Just releived to find out it is recognized condition as have felt i was going mad.

Many sympathies. I am a largely recovered OCD sufferer. Pregnancy and the post-partum period didn't really set me off, but they are terribly vulnerable times and big opportunities for OCD to get another foot in the door, so to speak.

I have in the past found the 'shame' of OCD difficult too, but we have no need to be ashamed. We are survivors of a pernicious and horrid condition. Hang in there.
