How Much does your 3 year old weigh?

My DS was 3 at Xmas - when he was born he weighed 9lb 14oz and was on the 98th centile - he's gradually fallen down the scale and is rather a small framed 'petite' boy, he weighs only 13kg.

DH and I haven't been unduly concerned as he eats a varied and well balanced diet. He enjoys a wide variety of food and will happily eat fruit and vegetables.

I went to weigh DS2 at the clinic yesterday and the HV commented that DS1 looked unwell, she questioned whether he eats and looked quite concerned. I was rather taken back as I'd gone there with DS2 with DS1 in toe.

Should I be worried?

Does he look unwell to you? Did the HV explain what she meant by that?

Hogiabach · 02/05/2008 09:40

He's a very active and alert little boy, but DH and I have been questioning last night whether he does look pale and gaunt...

my 3yo weighs alot more than that - around the 3 stone mark, he wears age 6 clothes. He is a big boy, my dh is 6' 3 and i am tall so i think if it fits in with your family then it is 'normal'. my ds eats loads of fruit and veg etc and isn;t fat but is just big.

don't let her worry you unduly.

13 kg is failry small but that's not necessarily a problem in itself. I would be more concerned that she said he looks unwell, and I would want to look into that.

eandh · 02/05/2008 09:43

My dd1 is 3.7 and often looks pale/pasty but like your ds eats lots of fruit and veg and has a balanced diet. I am naturally pasty looking and DD1 can look ill/run down if she is tired.

Last time I weighed her on scales at home she was 2stone 4lb (not sure what that is in kg) she was always around 50th centile as a baby for height/weight but I know she is taller than average as HV commented on it when I took dd2 for her jabs plus she has to have 4-5 trousers for length, therefore she looks 'slim' as her weight is distributed (in fact because sometimes she is 'grown up' in what she says people often assume she is 4 or 5 and wonder why she isnt in school)

Wheelybug · 02/05/2008 09:43

DD is 13KG and eats for England (healthy and non-healthy in a healthy mix ).

My DH though is v. slight and she appears to have both his build and ability to eat and not put on weight ( - at DH, Am v. pleased for DD if she turns out slim and leggy rather than dumpy like her mother....). She also is very active, walks miles, runs a lot, likes physical things so burns off a lot of calories.

You know, I think if you think he's well then ignore the HV. If he was 17 KG she'd be telling you he was overweight.

My nearly four year old weighs the same as my friend's son who's just turned two. But he's always been near the bottom on the charts (between 9th and 25 centiles). But he's followed a similar line since birth and was bf so no cause for alarm.

fishie · 02/05/2008 09:44

what a stupid thing for the hv to say. how utterly unprofessional of her to suggest there was something wrong wtih him in this way. what is she suggesting you do now then?

my (just) 3yo is 13kg, he is slim, active and eats pefectly well, average height etc, sounds just like yours. i am pleased he is smaller, cheaper on clothes than his friend who is constantly growing out of them!

Wheelybug · 02/05/2008 09:45

Oh and another thing.... The booster seats say from 15Kg and also say 'probably around 4'. So, although I know plenty of 3 year olds who are heavy enough for them clearly this can't be the average.

jo25 · 02/05/2008 09:45

My nearly 5.7 weighs just under 18 Kg,
Medics have told me he is under weight all his life, but its just him.

Only you know how you DS is and what he eats etc. Every child is different and if your were happy with him before visit to HV then i would not worry tooo much,

justaphase · 02/05/2008 09:46

My DS will be 3 in October. We took him for his 2.5 check couple of weeks ago. His weight was 16kg. But he is 1m tall - thats 99th percentile. The HV commented that he is very big for his age (not in a negative way). I regularly get people thinking that he is 4.

13kg does not sound unhealthy to me.

vitomum · 02/05/2008 09:46

my nearly 4 year old weighs just under 13kg.

he has always been quite wee. after a run of colds, bugs etc he can go through periods of looking pale and gaunt too.

I'm not so sure it was unprofessional of the HV. As I understand it, the HV was commenting on the fact thr ds looks unwell, rather then commenting on his weight, and that is actually what HVs are supposed to do - look at the child, not just look at the weight charts.

If she thought he looks unwell, she would be unprofessional to say nothing. But did she expalin what she meant?

I myself weigh 50kg and I'm a rather petite frame, so he might just be like me.

Thank you ladies, I feel a little more reassured now. Perhaps I will ask HV what she meant though

hoxtonchick · 02/05/2008 09:51

2.10 dd is 13.8 kg (according to our bathroom scales ). she's pretty much been on the 50th centile since birth. she looks quite petite. ignore hv imo.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/05/2008 09:54

Btw, my ds2 (nearly 4) is around 13kg. He's always been a tiddler but lots of his nursery friends seem to be about the same size.

ShowOfHands · 02/05/2008 09:55

belgo is right. My 11 month old is nearly 13kg so goes to show how different dc can be weight wise. Did she say anything else?

Hogiabach · 02/05/2008 09:59

No she didn't say anything else. I was a little peed off by her comments though, so just left.

Hogi - I think there's a good chance he takes after you !

SoH's is right - my friend's dd is 11 months and almost as heavy as dd (3.3).

Fennel · 02/05/2008 10:12

My dd1 is small and slim for her age (though she was a big fat baby for the first 6 months). All the rest of us are tallish. At one point she was being regularly weighted and measured to check there wasn't a growth problem, I think they do this as a fairly routine thing.
