Hi My dd is 3 in May and wears age 6 clothes and size 12.5 shoes. She is healthy and very tall - no probs in terms of development etc

I wondered if any others had dcs who were tall etc as sometimes feel am only parent with a giant!!!

Not at all. My ds is only 8 months but is already in 12-18 month size clothes. He is the average height of a 15 months old and same for weight. He's just gonna be big!

mummyeme · 24/04/2008 16:11

Hi,
My dds on the smaller side but has started gymnastics and there is a four year old little girl who's extremly tall for age (closer to a 6 yr old), likewise 2 of my friends have a girl and a boy who are big for their age, so no you aren't the only one. Think it must be difficult at times because, just because they're taller people assume they're older and therefore their behaviour should be more mature. Totally unfair.

MrsMattie · 24/04/2008 16:12

My DS is 3 yrs old - wears 4-5 yr old clothes and has size 12.5 feet. He weighed 10 lbs 2 oz at birth and has always been on the 91st-98th centile.

geekgirl · 24/04/2008 16:16

yes, ds (4.5) is very tall, he really sticks out amongst his nursery classmates. I guess he looks like he's at least a year older. Developmentally he is of course nothing like an older child - just a little preschooler.

He's due to start school in September and TBH I do worry that his size will cause him problems - he is after all only a little boy really, and I've heard that tall boys in reception sometimes have problems with older ones trying to 'take them on' in the playground.

FranSanDisco · 24/04/2008 16:24

My dd is 7.5 yo and wears 9 -10 yo clothes now and a size 1 shoe. She has always been big for her age even though she was only 7lb 10oz when born. People tell me she can't be 7 yo! When I take her to the hairdressers for a trim they price on age so it looks as though I'm trying to pull a fast one A mother in the park last week told dd to let her dd go in front of her as she was "smaller" wtf! They were both 7 yo Dd loves being tall though at the moment so if she's happy so am I

Shoegazer · 24/04/2008 16:42

My DD is 98th centile for height and weight at 22 months old, she looks about a year older too. The worst thing is when people expect to engage her in some sort of conversation - she has a fab vocabulary for her age, but its not quite that of a nearly three year that people expect.

nooka · 24/04/2008 16:48

Both my children are tall, but ds is also skinny so he looks taller IYFWIM. He's in the top three height wise in his class. dd is also tall, but more in proportion. She is usually mistaken for being much older than she is, and like FranSanDisco's dd is in size 10 clothes at seven and a half. She also has big feet - size 3 1/2. She loves being tall and takes seems to take pleasure in making friends with especially small girls! I worry more about her having problems when she is a little older and is mistaken for a teenage as she wouldn't be able to cope at all - she's a funny mixture of ultramature and yet a baby in many ways. Hopefully having a bigger brother will help - although I suspect he won't be physically bigger for much longer, as we've already had people ask if they are twins (there's 16mths between them). However dh (6'5") and I (5'10") are both tall so we will support her. She was only 6.13lbs at birth though.

VaginaShmergina · 24/04/2008 21:14

My DD is only just 8 but has been in age 10-11 clothes since she was just 7. Birth weight 7ib 14oz.

I am 5 feet 7 and so is hubby (Cornish pixie !!)

My dad is 6 foot 3 so maybe the height just skipped a generation !

Have just recently had the all clear from the paed consultant as we had been refereed coz of combination of her height/weight, mood swings (been happening since she was 6 !) and her awful body odour she sometimes gets.

She is basically just a tall child for her age and there is no cause for concern. I was worried bout promiscuous puberty but that has been ruled out (thank god)

Buying clothing for their "real" age is such a problem I find as most high street shops seem to think we want 8 year old tarts for daughters !!

It can be a problem with other people around you looking at your child as their behaviour/speech does not match their height. I try to drop it into the conversation, by asking the age of their kids if she gets funny looks.

beckystaffs · 24/04/2008 21:35

My dd2 is 22 months but has been in 3/4 clothes for some time (she will soon be in 4/5). Size 6.5 feet. She was 10lb8oz at birth and has always been on the big size (was in 3/6 months at 2weeks old).

But one the other side dd1 is small for her age. She is 3.5, but still in 2/3 trousers and still in 3/4 tops. I have found myself buying the same size clothes, even though there are 22 months between them.

They are often mistaken for twins, until someone talks to dd2 (she is a bit quite, due to a very noisy dd1 who tends to do all the talking required for her).

BIL is 6ft 7in so i think we know where she gets her tallness from, but she is in proportion height/weight.

She has her big sis to look up to. (DD1 age 3.5 weighs 2stone 2lb at the min, but don't know what dd2 weighs, as far more concerned about the elder one as dd2 seems in proportion)

Anushka · 24/04/2008 22:01

I know where your coming from beckystaff - although there's 4 yr difference with mine.
I have two dd - dd1 is the smallest in the class and dd2 is the tallest, and as I always say we are never happy. DD1 wants to be taller and dd2 wants to be a right girlie.
I do feel that we are put under so much pressure about body size/shape (neither of them are at all overweight) but both (particularly dd1) is very concious of size and weight. I think we've missed the point of health.

beckystaffs · 24/04/2008 22:15

Hi Anushka how old are your dd's?
It is quite amusing when dd1 tries to pick up dd2 and says 'come to mommy2, then dd2 just looks at her like she's mental!
Dp and I are not tall, but we are not short either, so not sure where dd1 gets it from. Dp calls her elf (I have been trying to stop him though)

Frizbe · 24/04/2008 22:17

dd2 just two, mistaken for being 3
dd1, why isn't she at school? cause she's only 4 not 6........

QOD · 24/04/2008 22:24

my dd is 9 1\3 and wears age 11 clothes, I was looking in her red book, she was exceptionally tall from 3 1\2 to 4 1\2 and its dropped back now.
She's still the tallest in her class, 1 boy is about the same, by between 3 and 8 inches LOL but it's not much now.

She is underweight for height though

Anushka · 24/04/2008 22:25

DD's 8 and 4, and we are fairly tall, but then I grew up always wanting to be smaller too!

beckystaffs · 24/04/2008 22:30

i'm 5"6 so fairly average for a woman, and dp is 5"10 - so not particually tall. dd2 is still my baby though- even though people think she is over 3. sometimes we get funny looks when she has her dummy!!

ingles2 · 24/04/2008 22:32

ds1 is enormous, he's 8.5 and wears 11-12 clothes and has size 5 feet. DH is 6'5 and I'm 5'9 ish. The biggest problem is that people expect him to behave like the teenager they think he is...
ds2 is tiny though...nearly 7 and comes up to his brothers chest!

Anushka · 24/04/2008 22:33

Take no notice!

Thomcat · 24/04/2008 22:36

I have the opposite. DD1 is 6 and tiny. She has Down's syndrome. Kids ask me how old she is and when i tell them they say 'well why is she so small' 'why can't she walk properly', 'why can't she talk much'. I find it impossible to buy clothes for a 6yr old's waist and a 2 yr olds legs.

ingles2 · 24/04/2008 22:42

Had a quick look at your profile Thomcat.. your dc's are GORGEOUS! and they look so similar when they grin.

dd2 is very tall for her age (in my profile there is picture taken when she was 3 or 4 with her cousin who is the same age and dd1 who is 2.5years older).

she is 5 now, and wears clothes for 8-9year olds. i get confused sorting out laundry as her stuff is the same size as dd1's stuff.

FAQ · 24/04/2008 22:59

DS3 is 11 months (today!), and has been in 18-24 months tops for about 2 months, and most of his trousers are now the same size

DS2 4 1/2yrs old, in 5-6yr stuff (although tops I can put him in 7-8yrs

DS1 7 1/2yrs in 8-9 clothes, but he's very skinny

MotherOfGirls · 25/04/2008 07:34

A note for VaginaShmergina.

I was interested to see your comment about your tall daughter's body odour. My DD2 is almost 10 and has always been on the 90th percentile for height (having started life at a long, thin 9lb 6oz). I started buying her deodorant when she was 8, whereas her older sister has just started to need it at age 13!

I wonder if there is any connection between body odour and height. Seems a bit tenuous, I know, but anybody else think there might be a link?

I also agree about the difficulty in buying appropriate clothes for children. Mini Boden is my saviour!

MotherOfGirls · 25/04/2008 07:38

By the way, I'm not working for Boden, but the elastic waists on their jeans, with buttons to make them smaller, are a godsend for a daughter who is very tall and slim!

Katsh · 25/04/2008 08:33

Motherofgirls, I have a just turned 8 dd who is very tall, and has been quite stinky on and off for the last year or so! No other signs of puberty so I have stayed calm - she just needs deodorant. She says that none of her friends need deodorant yet, and she is the tallest, so perhaps a link? On the clothes thing - can anyone advise where to buy girls tracksuit pants without slogans on the backside, that fit tall skinny girls?
