my ds 14 years ago properly walked at 9 months hed been toddling for about 3 weeks all of a sudden he was walking and not a wibbly walk either - he could get up nd down stairs aged 6 months yet he took 4 years to speak !!!
I think we are more aware nowadays of milestones and we encourage babies more -years go babies were babies for a lot longer .....

The parents lie. I've seen it so many times. How sad.

cornsilk · 09/04/2008 22:44

Rolled over at 2 days old? Was he very late?

nappyaddict · 09/04/2008 22:46

no really i saw him with my own eyes! he's been going to the group since he was a month old and all the mums said it was true. the video of him rolling was weird! don't know if he was late i didn't ask.

btw is it me or cdo people not buy this oh it's not a smile it's just wind rubbish. ds' never smiled when he had wind. he cried and his lip would curl up a tiny bit but he never smiled. i'm sure my friend's 3 day old properly smiled at me today but she burst my bubble and said it was probably just wind it's much too early yet. she apparently thinks i'm not worth smiling for i told her actually baby's can smile in the womb you know!

I got told by a podiatrist who runs a children shoe shop, that it is quite normal for italian babies to walk at 7 months. We have a big italian community locally.

Also when my son was walking at 10 months a lovely lady (who was black) told me he was just "like a little black baby"
Some cultures actually encourage their babies to walk early by building them little walk ways to hold onto.

nappyaddict · 10/04/2008 09:55

there was that baby last year who walked at 6 months wasn't there. now that must have been freaky!! i have known babies roll both ways from birth but the mums seemed to think 2 of them did it cos they were in so much pain from colic imagining babies pulling up and crusing at 5 months is so amazing to me. ds couldn't even sit until he was 10 months old!!

You are quite right nappyaddict.

It's easily explained by the fact that we now have much more scientifically validated information about the average child's biological development curve and the timeframe within which a child can be expected to reach developmental milestones. Basically the "spread" of time over which developmental milestones (especially motor development) can be reached is much greater than used to be thought. So parents are giving their babies the opportunity to reach those milestones sooner than before.

Hence some babies get there earlier than ever, and others who get there later are no longer considered unusual/late developers.
