4yo with transsexual tendancies

We had friends over this morning which was all going fine until I realised my 4yo ds had gone very quiet upstairs. I went up to see what he was up to and found him dressed in my dd's clothes (nice skirt, top, knickers, tights etc). Actually a very well put together outfit!! This is the second time I have found him like this. He is very much a 'boy' but lacks male companions as he is the only boy in his age group at preschool. Is this normal?! Is it just curiosity? Any advice would be welcome.

I think you mean transvestite

Normal AFAIK

zippitippitoes · 28/03/2008 13:30

just normal they love dressing up my ds was very keen on party dresses and bridesmaid dresses

they are just pretty clothes so who wouldnt

NomDePlume · 28/03/2008 13:30

It is common.

geekgirl · 28/03/2008 13:30

it's completely and utterly normal.

zippitippitoes · 28/03/2008 13:31

i didnt even notice it said transexual lol

Chockypot · 28/03/2008 13:31

Oh, whoops. I thought transvestite was someone who got sexual pleasure from dressing up and a transsexual was someone who thought they were something they weren't!

beansprout · 28/03/2008 13:32

And why not? It's just trying out different roles. No-one ever worries about them dressing up as aggressive superheroes.

And yes, transvestite, transexual involves rather drastic surgery!

collision · 28/03/2008 13:32

totally normal

And a transsexual is someone who changes gender from male to female or vice versa.

You mean a transvestite which is a man who like womens clothing!

Chockypot · 28/03/2008 13:33

Thank you - I won't tell my dh just incase!!

Izzywhizzy · 28/03/2008 13:33

I wouldn't worry. When I was a nursery teacher, the boys were always fighting over whose turn it was to wear the bridal dress in the dress-up box. They all wanted to play the glamour role!

donnie · 28/03/2008 13:33

I though it was called transgender nowadays.

Chockypot · 28/03/2008 13:34

Oh dear. Can I change the title!?

ROSEgarden · 28/03/2008 13:35

Aw bless him hes just playing dress up..dont worry..just try and find him alternaitives other than your dd's clothes, she wont be best pleased

pedilia · 28/03/2008 13:36

Normal behaviour, my DS's 7 & 3 love dressing up in my clothes and putiing outfits together, including matching their shoes and handbags

meemar · 28/03/2008 13:37

normal - if i had a dd I'm sure DS1 would be dressing up in girls clothes!

He is also 4, and for ages now he has been into all things girly. Loves pink, pretty things, every time he does a role-play game he pretends to be a girl. (usually called something like Tinkerbell, or Pretty or Flower )

On the other hand he is also very boyish. Loves running round being loud, likes playing with cars and trains and building spaceships out of lego.

They are just experimenting.

pagwatch · 28/03/2008 13:39

My dd had a princess party last year and one of her boy friends turned up as a princess. When he did another two got pretty arsy as they had been made to come as princes but had serious frock envy
tis just dressing up....

OverMyDeadBody · 28/03/2008 13:41

As everyone has already said, it's pretty normal and common at this age. They are just experimenting.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/03/2008 13:43

yes, it's just dressing up.
if he had come down in a pirate outfit, wuld you have posted "oh no my ds is delusional and insane! he thinks he's a buccaneer

ROSEgarden · 28/03/2008 13:43

i had two boy mindees(one just left) age 3 and 2, their favourite toy in my playroom is a bright pink fake jewel encrusted tea set, all frilly and chintzy..thats were youd find them!

marymoocow · 28/03/2008 13:50

I have loads of photo's of my ds 4 in his sisters princess dresses and fairy costumes. He loves her feather boah (sp?). He was distraught when we gave away dd's dressing up shoes to his little friend.
I am hoping its a phase, and can then use the photo's as ammunition in later life , or it will prove that he knew what he was all along iyswim

cory · 28/03/2008 14:15

And here I am sat wearing trousers... The only difference is, so many women of the early-mid-twentieth century held onto their transvestite tendencies for so long that age-old ideas of what constitutes male/female dress had to be totally revised.

When can we have a similar revolution for men? I think they'd look lovely

allgonebellyup · 28/03/2008 14:17

my ds is 4 and does this all the time. He loves wearing my dd's bikini and ballet skirt together..

the little boy i look after wears only pink wellies/shoes, and has a pink bed and also coat. i get funny looks when i take him out but i dont care!

TheOriginalXENA · 28/03/2008 14:19

DS2 is wearing fairy wings and a cyberman mask as we type

gagarin · 28/03/2008 14:21

One of my friends boys wore hairbands and clips between 2 and 4 years - always looked a picture!

Taweret · 28/03/2008 14:23
