my friend is worried about her ds. he sat up at 13 months but is still not crawling at 19 months. i know not all babies crawl but was just wondering if anyone else knows a baby who has crawled this late or if they just want straight to walking?

gosh that does seem very late. Does he bum shuffle or roll? My friend's dd is 15 months and can sit and just about pull herself up but doesn't crawl or bum shuffle. They don't seem in the slightest bit worried about it. 13 months is late for sitting too, did she worry when he didn't sit as well?

egypt · 10/03/2008 13:51

i suppose missing out crawling isn't a problem, but seems to be late in sitting too. does he pull himself up to standing? can he cruise around? has she had his developmental checks? if so what did the hv say?

nappyaddict · 10/03/2008 14:09

i thought the check was at 2 years?

MegaMindy · 10/03/2008 14:10

the child should have already had developmental checks.

Is the child mobile at all? If this were my child, I would speak to my Health visitor.

egypt · 10/03/2008 14:16

you may be right. there's one at 6 months but i guess that was too early. she should see her hv or a doctor. it does sound rather worrying tbh

nappyaddict · 10/03/2008 14:24

she wasn't worried until recently cos we both know a couple of babies who didn't crawl until 18 months but now he's reached 19 months she is wondering whether it is something to be concerned about. i will tell her to make an appointment with the gp.

really? i haven't heard of any crawling so late. is he mobile at all?

just looked at your profile nappyaddict. your ds is gorgeous. so are you! are you a twin btw, there is a pic of you with someone who is identical to you!

egypt · 10/03/2008 14:29

the one above you in the pool

nappyaddict · 10/03/2008 14:31

no, not a twin. that's my best friend. no ones ever said we look alike though! he can sit with support but not unsupported and he can roll.

na, 18 months is considered the upper end of 'normal' for walking. Although bum shufflers often miss out the crawling stage.

My DS didn't walk until 23 months, but he has very low muscle tone (amongst other things) caused by a genetic disorder.

What about the child's other developmental skills? Can he talk?

I would seriously recommend a visit to the GP or HV for a check up.

HereComeTheGirls · 10/03/2008 14:44

That does seem late..my DD has hypotonia low muscle tone but still crawled at 13 months. She should definitely get him evaluated. If it is low muscle tone physio can help a lot.

HereComeTheGirls · 10/03/2008 14:45

She was referred for evaluation because she could not sit unsupported at 9 months..so this child should definitely be seen I think!

phlossie · 10/03/2008 16:10

I wouldn't worry if he's pulling himself up and cruising, but if he's barely sitting, he should definitely get checked out. I knew a few babies who didn't crawl or bottom shuffle, but by 18 months they were at least walking pushing a trolley thing or walking unaided. He may just be a lazy bugger, but it would be better to get an expert opinion.

(I just had a look at your profile too, na - your little boy is such a cutie! I'm definitely a minimalist mummy too!)

Meandmyjoe · 10/03/2008 20:00

Wow, here's me complaining that ds still can't crawl at 7 months! I wouldn't be too worried about the crawling thing as lots of babies just miss out crawling and go straight to cruising and walking.

I would however, be a bit more concerned about the fact that he's not really sitting unaided. I would have thought if there was a problem though it would have been picked up at developmental check as my ds had his 6-8 month check last week and they were really happy with how well he sits alone and how he can roll over and back again. All I kept banging on about was how he wasn't crawling yet but I am a bit of a worrier!

Does he seem quite active as in rolling a lot, moving his arms and kicking his legs? He might just be a really laid back placid baby, f so then your friend is lucky as my ds is never still and constanly whinges at the fact that he can't crawl and get about on his own!

CoteDAzur · 10/03/2008 20:14

DD never crawled but did quite a bit of bum shuffling. Didn't pull up or otherwise go from sitting to standing until 22 months. Walked at 18 months but only if I stood her up.

I got her examined by motor development specialists, blood tested for muscle enzymes and x-rayed for pelvic abnormalities. All results were normal.

Then one day she realized she can push herself up from the ground. Six months later, she jumps, walks, runs, climbs, dances, etc. Still a bit behind her peers (I think) but apparently she was just lazy.

nappyaddict · 10/03/2008 23:34

round here you only get a 6-8 week check then a 2 year check.

OP posts:
Meandmyjoe · 11/03/2008 07:34

Oh, that's totally different to here (Lincolnshire). We get a 6-8 week check, 6-8 month check, 12 month check and 2 year check. Maybe they don't trust us so much over here lol!

Mmm in that case then I would definitely mention it to gp or health visitor. My hv is a bit crap to be honest and last time I saw her she told me it was time I started 'edging away' from ds and letting him cry He's 7 months but surely it's my choice what I do with my baby. He's thriving and developing well and sleeps through the night so I dunno why I would leave him to cry! She also told me that my baby had colic when he was just generally a mooy git and had absolutely no symptoms of colic Anyway, I would hope that your friend's is better. It can't do any harm just to bring it up if she's worried.

soph28 · 11/03/2008 07:39

I would be more worried about the 'only sitting with support' that is very delayed. My dd missed out crawling but was bum shuffling at 12-13mths and walked at 18mths.

Round here we get an 6-8wk check then no other dev checks till school age!!

Can your friend's ds clap, point, wave etc.?
How is he at picking things up?

Here you go, this should help your friend, Nappyaddict www.thenewparentsguide.com/baby-development-month-19to21.htm

nappyaddict · 11/03/2008 12:23

tbh neither of us really go by those development things that say what your baby should be doing cos they vary so much and i find they expect too much of them. my son is 21 months and can't do any of these things

Feed self with spoon and fork

Run well

Brush teeth with help

String more words together to make phrases or puts together pairs of words

and appaarently that's what a 19 month old should be doing!! they vary so much and even the doctors have said to ignore things like this cos they tend to overestimate when toddlers should be doing things.

OP posts:
tryingtoleave · 11/03/2008 12:43

That development guide makes no sense at all! At month 22 it says 'Some children will probably be able to form short but complete and understandable sentences' and then 'Some children could possibly be able to use up to 40 single words'. Surely it's way more advanced to speak in sentences than to use 40 words? Sorry, off the topic, but those guides just confuse me.

But according to my 'mighty toddler' book, which has conservative developmental guidelines that do seem to make sense to me, a child should be sitting by 12 months and should be able to 'stand upright beside furniture' at 15 months. It also says that bottom shufflers might not be walking at 18 months and that that is fine - but it sounds like your friend's child isn't bottom shuffling either?

deaconblue · 11/03/2008 12:47

Agree with you, nappyaddict, about not getting hung up on development guides but to be honest if I were your friend I would at least want to get his muscle development etc checked out as if he has a problem he is missing out on physio that could make a massive difference. I would definitely advise her to get him checked over if only to rule out any problems

Kewcumber · 11/03/2008 12:53

my DS couldn't sit without support at at 11 months and was considered very delayed (3 months premature). He has since caught up and was walking at around 17 months. I had him reviewed at 16 months to be sure.

I would talk to someone if I were her.

Kewcumber · 11/03/2008 12:54

his review was also because he was at risk of CP which wouldn't necessarily have shown until walking properly.
