my friend is worried about her ds. he sat up at 13 months but is still not crawling at 19 months. i know not all babies crawl but was just wondering if anyone else knows a baby who has crawled this late or if they just want straight to walking?

if I were your friend I would make an appointment to see the gp and demand a referral. Not sitting unsupported at 19 months is not the norm and although there may be nothing wrong it definitely needs checking out.

My ds didn't sit unsupported till 10 months but he was crawling at 7 months and pulling himself up at 9 months so the not sitting was lazyness rather than anything else but didn't stop me worrying.

Nothing wrong with a laidback attitude but if there is a problem the earlier your friend gets seen the earlier she can access any services that are necessary to help him.

Development charts aside, she should be shouting for a referral not just taking the hv at her word.

TotalChaos · 13/03/2008 10:42

I really don't think the HV should have been deciding to refer or not without even SEEING the child and how he is moving. Please urge your friend to get a 2nd opinion. It can be several months wait in some areas to get paed referral - os if your friend waited till 2, then the child may not be seen till 2.5. So far better to get on the list now.

sorry should have said she rang the hv for an appointment. the hv did actually see him.

I would ignore the HV, see the GP and ask fr a referral to a community paed. These motor milestones are all too late and just because her previous ds's were does not mean that there isn't a problem. There is a clear possibility that both children have a motor developmental issue.

I don't mean to be alarmist but this really needs checking out further as soon as possible.

My DD has been officially diagnosed with a mild gross motor delay..and she sat at 10 months, crawled at 13 months and is pulling up to stand now at 16 months.

Kewcumber · 13/03/2008 12:29

do you get any particular help/advice for her - just out of interest.

nappyaddict · 13/03/2008 13:05

what is motor delay though? is it just that they are a bit slower at doing those things but nothing actually wrong in the long run iyswim.

thats why I asked if there is any specific help advice you get. Not much use knowing if you can;t do anything to help.

nappyaddict · 13/03/2008 13:32

i'm not sure what you mean sorry.

Delay just means they are slower to reach milestones, could be any reason for it, some benign some not. Having said that, my DD just climbed out of her cot, so i think she is catching up!

HereComeTheGirls · 13/03/2008 15:33

And yes, I get help for her..in fact its since she started intensive physio every week a few weeks ago that she has started standing and climbing suddenly! Which is reassuring but a shock to my system!!

nappyaddict · 13/03/2008 15:46

see i think my own ds could have done with physio earlier but the gp (same surgery as my friend) wouldn't give him any unless he had got to 2 and was not walking. i can't remember when he crawled but it was after 12 months and he sat up at 9/10 months. they never seemed to think he was delayed, later than most but they never said it was anything to worry about but i suppose had he been offered physio he may have been quicker in doing these things. all my doctor kept saying was don't worry - it's not a race.

My DDS hypotonia was picked up because she still had head lag when pulled to sit at over a year.

nappyaddict · 13/03/2008 16:09

oh right i didn't realise she had hypotonia.

She does, although she seems to be growing out of it, judging by her antics today

nappyaddict · 13/03/2008 18:11

oh right that's good. i didn't realise they could grow out of it.
