Anyone not too concerned about regularly checking baby's weight/progress?

My bloody mother in law is driving me nuts with her continuous questions about how much my baby weighs. (so that she can brag about the weight to her crony friends)

This is my 2nd baby and it sounds a bit slack, but I dont much like to queue up and strip my baby down and get them weighed because I look at my babies and think - they look perfectly healthy to me, and feel quite sturdy, fill nappies, drink well etc.

Yet I see so many mums at the doctors surgery with equally healthy looking babies of all ages and I wonder if Im just being careless.

Is there something I am missing here?

I think you've answered your own question there!

I hardly ever go with DS, but always have a giggle at the PFB mums who are there week in week out even when the babies are 9/10 months old

LittleMissBliss · 28/02/2008 22:19

I only go every 3 weeks or so, can't be bothered to go more than that, like you i know he's happy putting on weight dirty nappies etc.

Echo Orinoco...

hairycaterpillar · 28/02/2008 22:37

I really see no need to go unless you are concerned. I went with DS1 quite alot initially,DD not much and with DS2 I think I've been twice and he is now 12mths.

MAMAZON · 28/02/2008 22:38

i dont think eithr of mine were measured or weighed other than at their developmentle checks.

DS3 has never been to the clinic. He was weighed at birth and afterwards when the nidwife came. I guess the last time was about 4 weeks when the HV came last. That was until he was 6 months old and needed a general anaesthetic and the next time was his 8 month check

He has survived - as have I, having no idea what weight he is!

onepieceoflollipop · 28/02/2008 23:05

I have no idea what dd2 weighs. However she drinks her milk, wees and poos ok, and is just going into 6-9 month clothes (was 6 months 2 weeks ago).

I was bored when I had dd1 - too much time and a lovely baby who actually slept a lot (and didn't have mumsnet either)- she went every 2 weeks to the clinic.

PABLOP · 28/02/2008 23:56

I have only been a couple of times, the last time 2 weeks ago! Thought it was a waste of time because I was there 3 minutes, he got weighed and that was that, When I came out of the health centre. I accidently locked DS 10 weeks old in the car with my car keys, mobile phone, handbag! I had to practically beg the receptionist to use the phone to ring DH, 1.5 hours later and one broken window DS free and he slept through it all.

I am curious to know how much he weighs though, I know he's heavy! Asked doctor at a routine appt and he said I have no scales you'll have to go to baby clinic, asked nurse at 6 week injections and she said I have no scales I'll have to go to baby clinic, all in the same building.

PABLOP · 28/02/2008 23:58

If you want to know how much your dc weighs, stand on the scales with him and then stand on them without him, take away the difference. I dare not do this because I am scared about what I will weigh!

RedJools · 29/02/2008 00:02

DD1 was weighed religiously. DD2 every month or so, and DS...erm, never seen a HV after 8 wks of age, apart from his jabs!! He is a happy little chubster! Does that answer your question?!

PABLOP · 29/02/2008 00:11

The scales thing was a joke by the way

eidsvold · 29/02/2008 02:46

me - only one I regularly checked with with was dd1 - due to her heart condition - now she is regularly weighed and measured when we go to outpatients. Dd2 and 3 - can't tell you what they weigh. Dd3 is almost 1 - has not been weighed since she was 6 months old when she had her last set of injections.

TheMags · 29/02/2008 09:58

I also went every month or so with DS1. He was a big baby and I got fed up with being told I had to watch what i fed him. On the other hand I've never taken DS2 to the weight clinic. He is under the hospital though for bowel and kidney problems so gets weighed there occasionally. To be honest though hes a big lad also so I dont worry.

spugs · 29/02/2008 10:01

dd1 was weighed 9 times and dd2 8 times, never found it particularly necssary. my friends who have babies seem to go every other week though. with this one ill prob go more often as the clinics been moved to within walking distance plus my cousin wants someone to go with her (shes 15 due in june)

cazzybabs · 29/02/2008 10:03

I am a slaker - dd1 was weighed ohh 3 times, dd2 twice and dd3 once at birth!

Elphaba · 29/02/2008 10:03

Me

I took ds1 all the time because he was a nightmare feeder adn quite small.

Ds2 and ds3 - I barely took them to be weighed at all after the first few weeks as they were good feeders and were clearly growing and developing just fine (and they were not PFBs so I wasn't all 'angsty' about it!!).

nospringchicken · 29/02/2008 10:41

My 4th has only been weighed a handful of times - at birth on the midwife's hand held sling type scale (home birth) and again perhaps at a development checkup or two/vaccination time. He's 4 now; eating fine, growing out of clothes etc., and, ahem, perfectly normal.

nospringchicken · 29/02/2008 10:45

If your mil is so interested, you have 2 options. No, make that 3.

  1. make up a weight somewhat bigger than the one you told her last time.
  2. Tell her you're not going to the clinic any more because your child is thriving.
  3. Invite her to take her grandchild and older sibling to the clinic herself. She can sit bored in the waiting room while they finger the grubby toys and possibly catch a cold from the inevitable toddler there with a nose full of streaming green snot, then she can strip the baby, hoping a wee isn't imminent, dress him/her again and bring the children back to you.

Meanwhile if you're lucky you'll have had an hour or two to yourself.

vannah · 29/02/2008 21:05

great Im not mad then.
nospringchicken- lovely idea that no.3....!

haven't had dd3 weighed since she was about 6 months - about a year ago. it's a nightmare to go to the clinic, my time is worth way more than knowing how much she weighs!

pagwatch · 29/02/2008 21:31

DD was seen by midwife and had check at six weeks. That was it until she went in for 18 month check. It was heaven. I just used my eyes and my instincts and she was fine.

She was 3rd dc . I did the whole malarky with the first, tailed off with 2...
Heaven

scottishmum007 · 29/02/2008 21:42

haven't had mine weighed since he was 7 mo and he's now just over 10mo. I know he's eating well because I'm the one at home giving him the food, and he's all in proportion. Loves his food too much!!
