When you were a child, did you tell stories to yourself before going to sleep?

I think DD1 does this. Her normality, however, is always questionable

IdrisTheDragon · 26/02/2008 20:43

I did. Still do occasionally tbh .

I used to read Enid Blyton and when i got older i read other books too ansd listened to the radio in bed tbh it's something i'ds like to encourage my dd1 to do, reading in bed for half an hour at night used to make me relaxed and when i was too tired to read i knew it was time to sleep!

expatinscotland · 26/02/2008 20:44

DD1 does this from time to time.

Sometimes I stand outside her door and listen to her telling them.

They're a bit like what we read to her at bedtime and sometimes she'll use characters from different stories we've read her or from CBeebies.

'It's Show and Tell in nursery and Poi brought her toy bear. Everyone loved it and some stroked it. Handa brought seven delicious fruits in a basket . . . '

Stuff like that.

luckylady74 · 26/02/2008 20:44

I tell myself stories now - seriously I make up lovely relaxing stories and that's how I manage to get to ssleep every night - it really annoys dh how easily I fall asleep. So yes I'd say it's a sign of high intelligence

motherinferior · 26/02/2008 20:44

Ah, well, I did send you DD1's instructions for How To Write A Story, didn't I?

Bluestocking · 26/02/2008 20:45

I did and sometimes still do!

Yes, still do...so did my best mate...so does my DD. Active imagination, no bad thing.
Maybe they'll be a writer?
I did, although these days I'm more likely to be composing a shopping list

Meandmyjoe · 26/02/2008 20:49

My cousin used to do this. The problem was, he had this amazing imagination and would have me and my brother hooked on his story, then he'd fall asleep and we'd never find out the ending! It was his way of relaxing and talking himself to sleep I think.

colditz · 26/02/2008 20:49

Yes.

I don't know about normal. I still tell stories to myself now.

ChirpyGirl · 26/02/2008 20:52

I did, my sisters did and DD1 does as well.
Hers last night (I eavesdrop now the monitor is back in her room!)was
'One morning, 3 bears eat breakfast, they eat porridge with chocolate on, the end'

lmg.....me too but i used to pretend i was in the famous five or at mallory towers lol-i think its nice that shes using her imagination

LoveMyGirls · 26/02/2008 21:01

I used to love st clares or the faraway tree! I read faraway tree to dd1 not so long ago and she loves it too!

Fennel · 26/02/2008 21:03

I did, til I was at least 16. Long running adventure sagas with me as multi-talented star. They were set in several whole fantasy worlds.

And then when I hit puberty the previously innocent storylines kept mutating into more raunchy directions.

MrsMattie · 26/02/2008 21:04

Yes. I told stories to myself during the day, too. Did it all the time. I'm now a writer!

ruty · 26/02/2008 21:05

yep i did this. adventure stories with me as the protagonist. ds, 3, already making up stories, kind of based on the ones he knows. I think it shows a healthy imagination.

ruty · 26/02/2008 21:06

LOL about Finley. Ds loves it too. It has got to be American, hasn't it?

tortoise · 26/02/2008 21:06

My Sister used to get me to make up a story to help her get to sleep (she's older than me!)
Only problem was my Dad hated us talking after going to bed and would come up and pull our cover off and smack hard.

blissa · 26/02/2008 21:14

I did, usually about My Little Ponies. Never got to the end though!

tryingtoleave · 27/02/2008 03:04

I still do - and there is no way I would tell anyone what they were about! Not that there is anything wrong about them (they are usually just an extensionof what I am reading) but it is my private world.

MeMySonAndI · 27/02/2008 03:06

I still do, and no, I won't tell anyone about them

twinsetandpearls · 27/02/2008 03:46

yes and I used to sing made up songs to myself, dd does the exact same.

Tortoise I used to get smacked for doing that as well. I can remember hearing him coming uo the stairs and lying really still with my eyes screwed shut in real fear. I would hate dd to ever feel like that.
