3? And then it was several outfits a day - regular fashion show here...

theboob · 16/02/2008 20:10

i feel really guilty as i cant remember (3 i think)

fingerwoman · 16/02/2008 20:10

my ds can do pants and trousers (kind of) at 3. but nothing else.
he can almost get a jumper OFF, but no chance of getting it on. ditto shoes.

Chattyhan · 16/02/2008 20:11

my ds is 3.2 and has just learnt to dress himself (all but socks) does get things back to front etc but can manage! I don't know of any of his friends doing it yet.

Heated · 16/02/2008 20:15

Ds is nearly 4 and can dress himself but it's a a 4yrs old's speed.

fletchaaarr · 16/02/2008 20:15

DS's, in general, are lazier about this, in my experience and in that of the people I work with

My DD is only 18 months, and not able yet, but she is willing and she tries

DS is 8 and would still rather I dress him rather than he make the effort himself

soph28 · 16/02/2008 20:16

oh that's good! DS is nearly 3 and can just about with LOADS of prompting/help do pants and trousers- often gets both legs in same hole! Today he was wearing a pants belt- made us all laugh! Obviously only for a few minutes- I'm not cruel enough to make him go round all day with both legs and waist all through one pants hole!

fletchaaarr- my dd is 18mths and is the same- willing and eager and interested!
ds- not interested, can't be bothered!

I'm sure I read somewhere that they should be able to dress themselves by 2 but that seems very ambitious to me!

3 here too. However, he wasn't truly independent about it (picking out his clothes, putting them on/taking them off easily) until he was close to 4.

bluenosesaint · 16/02/2008 20:22

dd1 was 4 and then it was still a struggle (we had alsorts of 'issues' with getting dressed and undressed at school ...)

dd2 was 2. And we regularly went through numerous outfits every day just because she could

TooTicky · 16/02/2008 20:22

Ds1 only really mastered his socks at 8. I think he'd quite happily lie down and let me dress him even now.

soph28 · 16/02/2008 20:25

ah- men all over the planet are the same. Happy to let someone do it for them!

DS really struggles with socks- even taking them off- he just tries to pull from the toes rather than tucking is finger in at the top and pulling- whereas dd has already worked out how to do this!

My dd is 3 in April and been dressing herself for about 4 months. She just wont let me help her unless we are running late and need to hurry, but generally if i lay her clothes out on the floor, she can put on pants, socks or tights, trousers, vest and top, and shoes. She will even have a go at zips etc.

mumwhereareyou · 16/02/2008 20:50

My DD was dressing herself at 2 and 1/2, couldn't do zips at first but has just mastered it and is now 3. Her brother is 4 and 3/4 and has only just learnt how to do it and even then is not great at it. He doesn't get socks at all and often clothes are back to front, inside out. But he does have SNs so that is understandable

scorpio1 · 16/02/2008 20:52

about 2.5. he is now 3.3 and does his own velcro shoes too, and coat.

DS1 (5.8) can't - but he is undergoing assessment for dyspraxia which may explain that.

mumtoone · 16/02/2008 20:54

ds is 4 and a quarter and he's only recently decided to dress himself. He's been able to do it for a while but he's not been very interested until lately in doing it all by himself. He now insists that I lay his clothes out every night. He is not interest in picking his own clothes which suits me fine as we'd probably end up with odd combinations. PS. when he dresses himself its not uncommon for things to be the wrong way round in inside out.

IdrisTheDragon · 16/02/2008 20:58

DS is 4.2 and can dress himself (apart from buttons) but more often than not is helped at least some of the way along the line.

FrannyandZooey · 16/02/2008 21:06

ds is 4.10 has only recently got the hang of doing his tops (he has a big old head) and ditto undoing pyjama buttons and putting on a vest

he can't do up buttons or do laces or zips yet

FranMay · 16/02/2008 22:11

Ds, 3.8 just says 'you do it mummy'. He was late to talk, late to toilet train, can't pedal, likes to be carried, refuses to take scooter out, try swimming. What more can I say? We love him to bits but he'd rather do anything than strive for independence!! His sister 1.3 is talking lots, imitating toilet behaviour, assists in getting undressed. They are sooo different!

FranMay · 16/02/2008 22:13

On 2nd thoughts, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on him and am guilty of exaggerating just a bit

Clary · 16/02/2008 22:17

DS2 is most recent. He could put on his pyjamas (easiest thing) by the time he was 2.

Has been getting dressed properly since about 2.5-3. He managed socks first IIRC, rather oddly.

Shoes, buttons, zips, gloves all come later tho IME.

Soph I think that "dress selves at 2" is more "put on one article of clothing" (eg jama bottoms etc)

frecklyspeckly · 16/02/2008 22:22

just about mastered the whole shebang at 5 including socks velcro shoes zips etc after a little encouragement from teacher and me. He was a little slower with most dvelopmental stages- because he couldnt see the point if mummy could do it for him! most of the reception kids seem to find it hard at times, they seem to get better when they start school and see their peers trying to do it. It doesnt matter - he may be just more interested in playing like mine !!

cory · 17/02/2008 15:37

if it's any consolation to anyone ds (7) still comes out of P.E. lessons with his trousers back to front, I have to be thankful if they're not inside out, and if there was any way he could get them on upside down I have no doubt he would go for it Men....

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 17/02/2008 15:42

Mine was 3.

FrayedKnot · 17/02/2008 15:47

DS is 3.11 and he is able to dress himslef completely including socks and even coat zip but being able to and being willing to are two very different things
