"Ta" or wait for "Thank you"

My son has just turned 11 months and I find myself saying "ta?" (as in "thank you?") when I give him things or take things from him. I've had a few murmerings from my husband that I shouldn't be talking to him in baby and should just say "thank you?" I'm thinking though that it's never too early to learn a few manners and in a few months he should be getting a handle on it as well as saying it. "Thank you" won't be in his vocab for ages!!!! Any thoughts??

There wouldn't be a bit of snobbery going on here would there? 'Ta' is 'informal usage', after all

LOL enid!!!!

Both dses said "ta" at first and now say "thank you" (or "fank oo in ds2's case). We encouraged them to say ta at first as they obviously couldn't cope with a full TY and we wanted them to learn manners. They graduated to the full TY on their own as they heard us say it.

Don't give a stuff what they say as long as they acknowledge that they have been given something. I say "ta" myself sometimes and don't think its common, or shocking, or anything. Would rather that than nothing.

Me too - I say 'ta muchly' sometimes but I'm basically a snob in most ways! Don't mind admitting it!

I wasn't being nasty either - just drunk and outspoken. It's much more fun posting when you are bevvied up, but a tad more embarrassing in the morning

Also wasn't getting at you Twiglett - but one poster (can't remember who now and it doesn't really matter)did say they thought it was "common"

But I give a bit thumbs up for ta!

OMG - the things that can turn contentious.
I hate "ta". The girls at dd's nursery used to laugh at me (in a nice way) when I insisted on telling dd to say "thank you". It is in NO WAY because I think it's common, it's because I thonk it's lazy use of the English language (Now ta muchly is fine gd, because it's an alternative phrase rather than laziness). I hate "ta" in the same way I hate "yeah" or "innit" or "wha?"

Oh me too prufock - sometimes I say it but it's like in a jokey way iyswim? I wouldn't say it in a shop or at the gym or whatever - I might just say 'mum can you do this for me, ta very much!' cos it sounds sort of cheeky. Does that make sense???

I don't think I like ta very much in older children/adults but I think for a small baby/child it is fine. My dd2 was saying 'ta' when she was 11 months old - my MIL's reaction was to say 'Oh dear' instead of 'wow, how fantastic that my 11 month old gd2 has the verbal skills to acknowledge that she is grateful for something'. No pleasing some people
