coby, that's fab. My mate's baby could do 1-10 at 17mths or something - sounded so freaky hearing tiny baby going wun, doo, free, for... Mind you, she was also singing along to twinkle little star at a year!!

IdrisTheDragon · 02/01/2008 21:51

DD is 2.3 and can suddenly recite up to 13 and count up to 6. Not sure if this has been happening for a while and I just missed it .

coby · 02/01/2008 21:56

mummymagic thanks , its nice to have a boast for my DD2 as DD1 usually gets all the attention as she has the big blue eyes and curls. When DD2 was born DD1 still got all the atnetion...why couldn't people see they are both perfect in every way and the best babies ever

coby · 02/01/2008 21:57

not sure what atnetion is think I mean attention

soapbox · 02/01/2008 21:58

15 months - although it is just repetition - the real sign of intelligence comes when they relate it to items and can add them and subtract them, I believe. As such it is a test of language skills rather than mathematical genius, I think.

mummymagic · 02/01/2008 22:03

soapbox, I think musical skills too with reciting.

Coby, oh I fear the same for my second (on it's way) as my first is a PFB on both sides of the family, and sounds like yours - blue eyes, curls, adorable, chatty, sociable etc etc... am sure as she gets older people will see their individual fabness!

BroccoliSpears · 02/01/2008 22:03

My 19 month old can cound to ten... though not in the traditional order. She's obsessed with nine. "One, two, tree, nine, fibe, four, eight, nine, six, nine, four, nine, nine, ten"

She can actually count (as in understand the difference in amount) to two.

JossStick · 02/01/2008 22:15

Did anyone else read this title as "okaaaay, i'm holding my breath and counting to 10 as i'ver just found out my Dc has 'done it' with a member of the opposite / same sex and how did everyone else cope"

just me then???

JossStick · 02/01/2008 22:27

Sorry to lower the tone

mummymagic · 02/01/2008 22:28

Joss, it took me SO long to get that. But yes, I can see it now!!

LyraSilvertongue · 02/01/2008 22:34

Yes, it's just you jossstick.

ds was around 18mths but he is a bit of a maths wiz even now at 4.2yrs
DD1 was about 20mths and loves counting out things.

lottymadbird · 03/01/2008 08:14

jossstick - pmsl ! guess time goes so quickly it wont be long before that happens but at the mo he is only 2+4 !!!!

colditz · 03/01/2008 08:16

3.5 months old, but unfortunately he couldn't master his vocal cords so sound the numbers. I could see him counting things though.

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 03/01/2008 08:47

Oh ds has only just got it sorted really, at 4.3

but he can add and subtract very reliably up to 10, and also tell the time pretty well (half past, quarter to/quarter past and he's getting the hang of the other pasts/to)

Dd can do it at 2.5, dunno how long she's been able to do it for, shes a second child

So different kids have different strengths. Ds won't learn anything by rote, he needs to understand it. Similarly, he is learning to write along with learning to read.

Much too much store is put by early skills, IMO. Doesn't mean much in the long run.

PMSL at colditz

leapinglemur · 03/01/2008 16:50

DD had no interest in counting until 23months. She never learnt anything by rote so the day she counted to 10 was the same day she started counting objects. She counted 10 peas on her plate at 23months. Within the same week she counld identify numerals 1-10. By 25months she was counting 20 objects. By 26months she was adding and subtracting within 5. She will be 3 in about 3 months time and can add/subtract within 10 easily using her fingers.

pyjamagirl · 03/01/2008 16:51

18 months {proud mummy]

Blandmum · 03/01/2008 16:51

colditz, and was there virtual abacus action with your dc as well???

Oblomov · 03/01/2008 16:57

3, I think.
Shocked at all these 18 mth olds !!!!

snorkle · 03/01/2008 17:51

At 18months ds could count by rote but missed numbers out (eg 1,2,3,5,7,8,10) but he could also count with understanding items up to 3. He's 13 now and still a maths wizz. I suspect there is a small correlation between early counting and maths ability later but plenty of kids that don't can go on to be good mathmeticians later and vice versa as well.

Twiglett · 03/01/2008 17:52

On her 3rd birthday. dd counted to 10 in the correct sequence after blowing out her candles. All the parents were a bit surprised because there were only 3 candles!

I'm a bit surprised too with all these 18 months old. Dd was the second youngest child at her party and the parents of the other children admitted that theirs couldn't count to 10 in the right order! And I thought dd was clever. Seems not to be the case - I have a case of deflated ego now!
