  • a mobile phone
  • pierced ear(s)
  • TV in their room

As dd1 tells me that all her friends have all of them, or will be getting them for Christmas, and she feels "left out" and "stupid" because she has none of them.

Nobody has a tv intheir room in our house.
Pierced ears were not encouraged but she could definately earn them when she sits her grade one piano. This has not encouraged her so far, offer has ben on the table, for two years!
Mobile phone is unnecessary for primery school kids if the school is round the corner, however she is getting one this christmas because the secondary school (7 miles away) bus is always breaking down and frankly im running out of ideas for christmas, so it might as well be a present now as slightly later.

snorkle · 22/11/2007 09:17

No to TVs and pieced ears. One dc had a mobile phone at 11 the other 10 (and we regretted it - 10 was too early).

sakurarose39 · 22/11/2007 09:22

DD got a mobile phone for her 10th birthday last week - she walks to school (has done since she was 6 - we are in Japan, and everyone walks to school on their own from Yr1) BUT she has been getting more freedom to go to friends directly from school, to the leisure centre pool, walking to her dance class etc. so felt it would be best to buy her a phone. No internet access - and set up by us so that she is only able to contact numbers we have recorded in the phone's memory (home, my mobile, DHs mobile).
No pierced ears - unthinkable in Japan up until about high school (15 yrs). and no TV in room.

Anna8888 · 22/11/2007 10:13

My elder stepson (12) got a mobile just over a year ago when he started secondary school and began taking himself to school and coming in and out of the house at odd hours (French secondary school doesn't have fixed hours every day of the week). Useful in emergencies.

Younger stepson will get a mobile next September for same reasons.

The boys both have TV in their bedrooms at their mother's house but will never have TV in their bedroom at our house - we have one TV for the whole family in a dark, uncomfortable corner. But lots of portable DVD players/computers so people can watch films and improving stuff .

Pierced ears - my daughter is 3. Haven't crossed that bridge yet, but definitely not before secondary school at very earliest.

GrapefruitMoon · 22/11/2007 14:53

None of them. Will give her an old mobile when she starts secondary next year. If she really wants to get her ears pierced I will probably allow that on her next birthday or during the summer hols but tbh she hasn't asked yet - though most of the girls in her class have had them done in the last year or two....

She can have a tv when she can afford to buy one herself!

ByTheSea · 22/11/2007 14:59

My DS2 is 10 and in year 6 and has none of the above. DS1 is 11 will get a mobile phone for Christmas now that he's in secondary school. DS1 also has a television in his room, but it's only used with his playstation (which he shares with DS2) and he is not allowed to use it once he goes to bed. Neither DS has a pierced ear although they both claim to want one, but I allowed DD1, who is eight, to have her ears pierced this past summer and she looks after them herself.

Miaou · 22/11/2007 15:07

No to mobile (well I suppose technically that's not true; we have a mobile for her to use if ever she's out without us, but it is not "hers" for texting mates etc)
No to ears pierced (she wouldn't want them done anyway)
Kind of yes to TV - they have a TV in their room on which they can play their PS2 but not watch TV. They have to ask before using PS2 as well (dd1 shares with dd2 aged 9)

Sorry, but lol at "all my friends have one and I feel stupid and left out for not having them" - the classic guilt-strings trick!

mrschaff · 23/11/2007 10:06

My daughter got a mobile when she finished year 6 in readiness for her starting senior school. She had her ears pierced at about the same age and got a tv for christmas at about 10 and a half. Shes now 16 and an absolutely wonderful girl and none of these things have done her any harm.

filthymindedvixen · 23/11/2007 10:09

no to pierced ear (boy)
no to tv in room (he has a video player)

mobile phone - technically yes - but it is a Phone and text only, £15 off ebay with £10 woirth of credit on. We bought it so he could find us but have a little independance at festivals.

ATortIsForLifeNotJustChristmas · 23/11/2007 10:17

DS1 10
No phone (desperatly wants one, won't be getting until at least next Christmas!
No ear piercing!
No TV and he won't be having one for a long time!

serenity · 23/11/2007 10:28

DS1 - only yr5 but I can't see things changing that much in a year

Phone - no. Depending on which secondary school he goes to he may get one in Yr7, but tbh I'm going to wait and see if he actually needs one first.

Ear piercing - no. He's shown no interest, and if he ever does I'd rather he waited until he was older (I quite like it on grown men, but think it looks odd on boys)

TV - no, for now and the forseeable future.

onlyjoking9329 · 23/11/2007 10:40

my three are 13,13 & 10
no to earings
no to mobile phones
but they all have tvs in there rooms they watch DVD only, they watch something when they go off to their rooms usually 7/7.30
it is part of there routine they have autism and it helps them to chill and it allows us a time to chill too i don't see a problem with it.

Hallgerda · 23/11/2007 11:20

I have a son in Year 8 with none of the above. Indeed, we don't have a TV in the house at all. And I don't have a mobile either (or pierced ears).

suedonim · 23/11/2007 12:25

Dd received a mobile phone for her 11th birthday, plus we live in Africa and it's essential for safety reasons.

No to pierced ears and no to a TV in her room.

emsiewill · 26/11/2007 22:27

This has been really interesting, thanks all for your input. I did actually think that there would be more yeses than noes to all 3 things.

We have decided that she can have a mobile for her 11th birthday in Jan, mostly because it solves the problem of what to buy her, and saves us having to pay out for it at what will be an expensive time later in the year. We aren't going to tell her though; will keep it as a surprise.

For practical reasons am sticking to my guns with the ear piercing, though, and will never change my mind about the TV (well, perhaps never is a bit strong, but certainly have no inclination to do so)

I have an 11 year old dd. She has a phone - we got her one when she went to secondary school. Soe isn't allowed to have her ears pierced until she's 14, and there will be no TVs in bedrooms while I draw breath!

Nightynight · 26/11/2007 22:37

mobile phone - yes, for safety
pierced ears - first at 14
TV in room - she'll have to get a place at Oxford, first.

Blu · 26/11/2007 22:44

My two yr 6 10yo nieces (in different families)
1.No
Yes (but asian so more 'cultural)
No

  1. Yes
No No
Linnet · 26/11/2007 22:45

dd1 is 10
no mobile phone, but she's getting one for christmas.
She got her ears pierced summer holidays 2006, kept the earrings in for the 6 weeks, took them out for going back to school, tried to put them back in 3 weeks later and the holes had closed up. She wants to get them done again next year.
No tv in her room, it's never been mentioned plus there isn't enough space in her room for one anyway.

Sambeth · 24/02/2012 14:42

Mobiles in this house were banned until 16, much to the fury of both my teenagers. They are very damaging to kid's brains unfortunately :( Even to those in utero. Read articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/02/23/should-pregnant-women-avoid-using-cell-phones.aspx if you think I am just being a kill joy. It is not being discussed but it's something we should all be aware of - the tobacco of the 21st Century.

cece · 24/02/2012 14:47

a mobile phone - DD had one for xmas this year - she is 10 and in Year 6

  • pierced ear(s) - I have offered to get hers done this summer but she has declined the offer saying she will never have them done Hmm
  • TV in their room - NEVER - well not till they are old enough to buy their own (18+ years) and even then I won't be happy about it.
tumbleweedblowing · 24/02/2012 14:47

DD1 (12 Yr7)
Yes to phone - got it first time she was away from home at the end of Y5.
No to ears - only one of her group not to though
No to TV in bedroom - but there is one in the kids living room.

DD2 (10 Yr5)
Yes to phone - she "plays out" with friends.
Ears and TV as above.

They've been told they can have their ears pierced at 14, which was random, but I'm happy to stick to that.

Not a lover if TVs in bedrooms for anyone. So will definitely stick to that.

LilyBolero · 24/02/2012 14:49

mobile phone - no, will get him one for his 11th birthday in preparation for secondary, will be VERY basic, phone only (ie not a smart phone!)

pierced ears - no, and dd will not be getting her's done

TV - no, only one TV in the house, in the living room.

DottyDot · 24/02/2012 14:53

No
No
and No
Grin
ds1 is year 5, aged 10 and won't have any of these things next year either. But he does have an ipod touch, which he paid half for and was our compromise (as according to him, all his friends have blah blah blah...).

He'll get a mobile phone when he starts secondary school and that's that.

BendyBob · 24/02/2012 14:57

No to all three although the phone and the earrings are mentioned regularly.

I've said I'll consider the pierced ears when dd stops getting into wrestling matches with her brother. As this happy day doesn't seem imminent, I doubt she'll get them done before she's 37.

They'll have a phone when they need one which will be in yr7, but it won't be anything fancy

No-one's asked for a tv. They dont really have room, but we do have another one just for dc's use anyway.
