How do I, get my toddler to do poos?

My toddler who is 2yrs 7 months is dry, and asks to go to the toilet - great! But when it comes to the poos, he tells me to go away, and hides in a corner to do it. He did go through a stage of constipation, but that has passed (no joke intended.

He just will not entertain the idea of doing it on the toilet. This means changing pants etc. Sometimes he asks for a nappy for his poo.

Help ...what do I do?

We had this problem for a while ... DS gave himself a real problem in the bottom department as he wouldn't go when he needed to and waited until he had his nappy on. We solved it with rewards ... he likes party poppers so whenever he did a poo in the toilet I let one off and he walked around all day holding the 'rain' in his hand ... It was a scream.
He still hates doing poos in the toilet though ... he used to be a once a day boy but now he goes every third day ....
Not easy ... but they do 'get it' eventually.
JimJams ... not sure what you should do ... Is DS dry but still won't do poos or is he not potty trained at all yet?
I guess you just have to set a date and try to crack it ... hope you get some joy soon ....

Pluto good luck. I would go for the training weekend approach. Our ds has been absolutley fine ever since and I'm sure has now forgotten that poos were such an issue. He takes himself happily off to the loo and hasnt had any accidents. What a relief. He has also become much less angry and tantrum-y which could be coincidence but I feel must be at least partly connected. It was a bit 'cruel to be kind' and was hard at the time (reminded me of controlled crying a bit)but I do think it was doing him a favour.
Jimjams, I remember people suggesting sitting the child on the loo with the nappy on and trying to get them to do it like that first, then eventually removing the nappy (or someone said they cut a hole in the nappy as an in between stage!)Might that work for you?

I have been away from mumsnet for a month or 2, I really really dont have the time! But just couldnt resist peeping in tonight. And now that I have written on a couple of threads I will have to keep coming back to check...Sigh

He's had training pants for a while- but they're too small now really (he's a pretty big 4 year old). I did get a big pull up washable nappy made ofr him but he won't wear it. I'm not sure it makes all that much difference as he tends to remove whatever he's wearing anwyay when he wees (even disposable nappies). Although recently he sometimes won't say anything if he has soaking wet pants (think he's worried about being told off- he is a total perfectionist and hates to get anything wrong). A friend used the nappy trick, - cutting it until there was only a tiny bit left. OCuld try that.

I was using PECS cards (piccies) to try to get him to tell me, but I think they were stressing him out. I've left them on the walls, but let him tell me in his own way. Today he grabbed me, pulled me to the bottom of the stairs said "ah un ummdan " (I want toilet) and pointed upstairs. Sat him on there and he still didn't go. BUT he did do a poo on there later. I've been trying so many different strategies for about 6 months now. My kates was just to out him in pants all day, but he really does hold on until bed time. Oh well guess he won't need to go at school then!
