When to start toilet training my 4yr old at Night?

My 4yr old son has been dry at night for ages but his nappies are still wet in the morning. The HV suggested leaving it 6 months but DS wants to stop wearing nappies now and asks most nights. Should i go with his wishes if he is so keen and risk wet sheets (no tumble dryer - help), or stick to HV suggestion and wait?

My 4y old gets up with his nappy around his knees and walking like a mexican!

I thought is was hormonal (I think I read it on another thread).

I am going to leave it at least a year before I get worried.

You can rely on the occasional damp night until he's at least 5 I reckon. DD was sometimes wet at night until that age. Don't forget the waterproof mattress cover! I had to take mine on holiday with me.

Waterproof cover
Then standard cotton mattress cover

Then another waterproof cover with another standard cover over the top of that.

If he wets in the night, all you have to do is strip off one layer.

I used three layerings with dd1 until she was 5.

DD2 was dry by age 2.

My HV told me that there is a hormone that slows down wee production at night and with some children it takes longer to kick in. DD2 was 6 before reliably dry at night and I didn't give drinks after 5.30, put her on the loo when I went to bed. e.t.c.Patience and no pressure is the way to go. They do it when they are ready. Statistics show that about 25% of 5 year olds are still not dry at night. Shame that the kids you hear qabout are the ones who are dry at night at a v. young age (which makes you feel like a total failure!

Thanks for all the suggestions, will leave in nappies for a while as he has bad cold at mo so not the time to try. Interesting what you were saying smartiejake about hormones, I have heard a similar thing. It does make you feel like a failure but it shouldn't becasue they all develop differently. Think i need to buy waterproof sheets etc sooner rather than later!

Takeadeepbreathe he is only 4! You are correct it is biological-the ability to concentrate urine in the bladder develops at a variable age and is not uncommon for boys to still wet at 4, 5, 6 , 7 even. It is only a problem when he decides it is one-sleepover age etc.
Best to rely on either night nappies or mattress protectors at this age!!!
