TV in childrens Rooms????????????

My two children aged 5 (girl) and 7 (boy) have been arguing constantly this half term about the TV - we only have the one - they do not have one in their rooms. They don't watch it all the time obviously but whenits on they argue about it - usualy because one wants a dvd and the other wants the Playstation. DH thinks we should get them one to take the TV out of the equation iyswim! Most of their friends have TV's in their rooms. Obviously it would be limited....... but what do people think. Good idea or not? what are your experiences? Thanks for your input!!!!!

lol agree its a snobbery thing.

We have story time after ds had his bath, we lay on my bed for a while and read and chat about his day. Sometimes its with me sometimes with with DH. Having a tv in the kids bedroom doesn't make anyone a bad parent.

There are lots of times when I think it would be handy (Saturday lay in time springs to mind) but DH and I have decided that we're not going to do it. We've also decided that the PC with internet access will always be in a "family" area so we can supervise its use.

JacOLantanne · 25/10/2007 12:01

It's more a supervision thing for me than a snobbery one. I taught 5 year olds who watched "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" because they shared a room with their older siblings and there was a TV in it. I may change my mind when they're older of course.

WalkingCorpseScum · 25/10/2007 12:02

Yeah, I'm such a snob!

WalkingCorpseScum · 25/10/2007 12:04

Not everyone who makes different life choices to you is looking down upon you. I know that's shocking and all!

But the OP did ask what people thought.

TVornoTV · 25/10/2007 12:04

Yes i agree about the computer, can't see me ever changing my mind about that - but as I said IF we relent and get TV's then it will only be for agreed upon DVD's

I have a tv in dd's bedroom (6.11) but she is only allowed to watch it in the morning once she is already dressed for school, until I get up and go and do breakfast, or at weekends, morning til breakfast.
She also has to let her brother in her room (2.10) when she is watching the tv, mainly because we dont like them being downstairs by themselves before we are up.

We have only one TV, in a dark, uncomfortable corner of the dining room-cum-play room. If we want to watch TV/a DVD, we move the TV so that it is in front of the lovely big comfortable sofa in the sitting room. But children have to make do with cushions on the floor.

This is a great TV limiting tool. However, for those of you who think we are very mean to our children, my stepsons are only here half the time and we know that at their mother's house there is limitless TV - and four TVs for four people.

We also have two portable DVD players, used mostly on journeys but sometimes at home (especially if we want to watch TV and the children aren't interested) and the boys have an XBox in their bedroom.

My view has always been that kids shouldn't have a TV in their room until they can buy it themselves.

Just my preference..
