my little ones only 15 months and we are still using a pushchair. i don't think i'd make him totally give it up until he was 4 though.

madamez · 19/09/2007 15:20

DS is almost 3 (he will be 3 on Monday) and we have been gradually phasing out the buggy over the course of the past year, though I still pop him in it if we are going out in the evening.

When you say, walk everywhere. are you car-free and therefore likely to be walking greater distances? Because toddlers, even ones who like to walk, can only walk so far without getting knackered and wanting to be carried. Up until the past month or so I have tended to take the buggy (it's one of the lightweight folding ones) anywhere that's a distance from home, and I still lke to use it for lengthy daytrips as it does mean I can sit him in it and know where he is for a few minutes.

juicychops · 19/09/2007 15:21

my ds will be 3 in january and i was thinking of maybe when he turnt 3 as even though i take the pushchair everywhere with us at the moment, he very rarely sits in it

Ds is 2.5 and I am slowly trying to ditch it. We walk to local shops now most of the time and we are now walking to playschool which isn't too far away.

I like to use it more when shopping in the City or crowded places where I think he will get tired or grumpy.

nappyaddict · 19/09/2007 15:25

i don't know many 3 year olds who would be happy walking around town for hours shopping without getting tired. and a lot of 3 year olds still have a nap in the daytime so it would mean having to plan when you go out so he has his nap before you go or you have to make sure you are back in time for it.

bozza · 19/09/2007 15:27

Start phasing out at 2 1/2. Properly out at 3. Both DC. Neither would nap in buggy at that age, so I had to plan anyway.

bozza · 19/09/2007 15:28

DD has managed full days out at legoland when just 3 without a pushchair.

TigerFeet · 19/09/2007 15:29

dd (3.2) has hers to nap in if we are out all day

other than that she hasn't really used it for a while. I'm afraid I can't tell you when she stopped, it was fairly gradual and didn't register on my radar.

We have never forced her out of the buggy and made her walk, she had done it on her own, at her own pace.

She gets plenty, loads, of exercise without being forced to walk when she is tired

Joash · 19/09/2007 15:30

All different with mine. DD's pushchair broke when she was 14 months and at that time, we couldnt afford to replace it, so she walked from then on. DD2 was about 2 years old, DS was also about 2.
GS was 2 and then 3 - He stopped using the pram/buggy at 2, but broke his leg, so had to go back in one and once the pot was removed it took him a while to rebuild the strength in his leg. He's now 4 and can easily walk four miles

scattyspice · 19/09/2007 15:34

DS is 4 and can climb mountains.....if he wants to.

I still use the buggy board otherwise we would have to drive everywhere.

nappyaddict · 19/09/2007 15:34

it also depends how early they walk. my ds is 15 months and still not walking. so first we've got to wait for him to walk and then build up the stamina to walk long distances. a child who was walking at say 9 months is obviously going to build this up before a child who does walk until they are 2!

law3 · 19/09/2007 15:44

the minute he could walk, on his 1st birthday, it was easier to let him walk, than deal with all the tantrums trying to get him into the pushchair!!!!!!

bozza · 19/09/2007 15:56

Mine both walked at about 13 months.

katylou25 · 19/09/2007 16:31

Ds1 walked most places from about 18 months, had double buggy so he could ride if needed, hasn't gone in a buggy since he was 2 - will do days out etc walking happily.

Ds2 might be in it for longer because now doing school runs etc - much more daily walking.

bran · 19/09/2007 16:40

DS hasn't really used his pushchair since about 2.9 yrs. I took it with me to go to the supermarket about a month ago (he's now 3.4 yrs) because I knew I wouldn't be able to carry everything and he refused to get out of it. He thought it was a great treat.

HuwEdwards · 19/09/2007 16:40

I was 38 and a half.

bran · 19/09/2007 16:48

Huw , do you belong to the Pedants Clique by any chance?

TheMadHouse · 19/09/2007 16:50

DS1 who is 2.5 has refused to go in the buggy for the last 8 months. DS2 is 15 months and not yet walking. I thought we would be using a double for ages, but are now just using the phil and teds, as a single and have the double seet in the car just in case.

He insists on "big boy walking"

TheQueenOfQuotes · 19/09/2007 16:51

I'm "car free" (well we have a car but I don't drive and DH uses it for work so I walk everywhere with the DS's).

DS1 didn't compketely ditch the pushchair until he was about 3 1/2yrs old - and even then used the buggy board for a while - but he didn't walk until he was 18 months,

DS2 on the otherhand has been walking without the pushchair for ages - I think he'd just turned 2 when we stopped completely - but he walked at 10 months....

DS3......watch this space

tarantula · 19/09/2007 17:05

We walk miles everyday as have no car so buggy will be round for quite a while and dd is 3.6. She can and does walk miles happily but the buggy is a godsend if shes tired or grumpy. Its needed for trips out too cos travelling back on the train/bus etc is fine its the walk from the station home thats hell. You can also dump all the crap in teh buddy too. Saves carrying the picnic etc.

LowFat · 19/09/2007 17:09

DD was about 18 months when we started to leave the puschair at home - bless her she'd only just learned to wlak at 15 months. But we encourage her by letting her take a dolly pram and she's now a great walker - although has regressed a bit since DS has come along and is being pushed everywhere

izzybiz · 19/09/2007 17:12

My Dd is 3.4 and still ahs a buggy, she hops in and out of it in town, but the walk home is a bit much, Im not worried how long she has it her brother used his till he was nearly 4.

Clary · 19/09/2007 17:16

Mine were all about 2.5. Older 2 graduated to buggy board, DS2 poor boy had to go cold turkey but he was totally fine. Maybe DH pushed him home from the CM (about 2 miles) about once last year, the year he was 3. I do know we took it on holiday when DS2 was 2 and 3 months (to UK seaside town) and didn't even put it together!

Hate the buggy, wretched things get in the way, very glad to get rid.

Mind you I never walked round town shopping for hours (? why would you do that?) or anyway not with the DCs in tow. Another pleasure lost.
Mine never napped beyond 2yo either, or they wouldn't sleep at bedtime...

havalina · 19/09/2007 17:31

My dd had to go cold turkey at 3 as her brother arrived and I really didn't see the point of a double buggy at that age nevermind getting one on a bus etc. We have a few whinges (she has just turned 4), but she is generally fine and manages to walk, we don't have a car so she will probably walk quite a distance on a day out.

Gives us a good excuse to stop and have a coffee if she wants a rest lol
