My 4 year old is far too clever for her age. Been reading since 2.5, etc etc.

My 2.3 month has been putting in numbers on the microwave - 800. He then said "8". [shocked] Waited a while, hubby came home, I typed in 800 and asked DS2 what it said. "8".

Confused
beansprout · 13/09/2007 18:05

Why is this odd?

LowFat · 13/09/2007 18:11

Maybe you have an early talker - I would encourage.

My 9mn old has started to say Bob and Builder , following a weeks holiday at Butlins, where he saw Bob every day!

law3 · 13/09/2007 18:11

and..................?

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 18:13

I was thinking that a 2 year old recognising numbers was quite good!!

OP posts:
totaleclipse · 13/09/2007 18:14

Sorry to burst your bubble but I dont think its that unusual

DS could count and recognise numbers upto 20 before he was 2, and also knew the whole alphabet both upper and lower case, however what we did'nt know at the time was that he has ASD.

Othersideofthechannel · 13/09/2007 18:14

I suppose it depends how many numbers he can recognise. DS could recognise two letters at that age but it took him ages to learn any more.
He is bright but not gifted.

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 18:15

2 year old recognising a number he has imputted on a microwave is normal?? Golly, you learn something new every day!!

OP posts:
NAB3 · 13/09/2007 18:15

Not fussed about him being gifted!

not sure cant member wot my ds's could do at dat age.

Im 30 now, and realy good at spelling doe, if dats any help

Smithagain · 13/09/2007 18:52

Not sure about "normal", but not totally off the scale. I'm pretty sure DD1 recognised the first letter of her name at about the same age.

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 18:58

I didn't think for a minute he was anything special.
It just seemed amazing that he could read a number at 2.

My 2.3 year old ds knows numberals 1-9 and can count to 20
recognises his name
speaks in full sentences

think if you talk to them they talk back
my dd had reading age of 8.4 in reception class.

And my point is
that is doesn't do them any good to be ahead of their peer group because schools are not set up to deal with it anyway.

HonoriaGlossop · 13/09/2007 19:14

yes I think it is pretty normal NAB enjoy it though - it's still amazing, I think, even if fairly common! It amazes me how much they can learn at just two!

shatteredmumsrus · 13/09/2007 19:21

My 2.6yo son loves cars and I mean LOVES car!Every car we walked past or every car that we drove past he says 'what is it?' and I have always reeled the make and model of the car to him. Now when he says 'what is it mom'' and i answer he says 'no its not its a ......'. So he has picked it up really quick because he is interested in it. He knows so many types of cars its embarrassing. Especially when I am corrected! I just think he is a clever boy with a good memory.

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 20:38

He is like that. He can't say the make of a car, unless it is a mini, but he recognises the VW badge and the Renault and says Daddy's/Mummy's car.
I suppose you forget how much they can do at 2 and a bit.
I still think he is amazing as he had a tough start and didn't really talk until 16-17months. His speech this last couple of weeks has really come on.

nappyaddict · 13/09/2007 20:41

is it unusual to not be talking at 16 months then? my ds is 15 months and only says mum and baa baa (for baa baa black sheep)

Desiderata · 13/09/2007 20:44

Your dd was reading at 2 years and 5 months?

Picking up a book and speaking the words aloud to herself ???

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 20:45

No, but I felt he was late as he was later than my first 2 children. Even now he isn't saying what his brother could say at this age.

Desiderata · 13/09/2007 20:45

.. and my ds was only coming out with single worst at sixteen months. Methinks you're having a little brag, here

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 20:45

She was reading Reception key words. She is now 4 and knows all Year R and 1 words and can read some ladybird books. She has always got her nose in a book.
