My 4 year old is far too clever for her age. Been reading since 2.5, etc etc.

My 2.3 month has been putting in numbers on the microwave - 800. He then said "8". [shocked] Waited a while, hubby came home, I typed in 800 and asked DS2 what it said. "8".

Why not, nothing wrong with bragging about your kids

UniSarah · 13/09/2007 20:49

define "reading". I have a boy who has been "reading" his books for months, hes 18m/o. hes sits with a picture book, turning the pages and signing or talking about what he sees on each page. However as his speech isn;t very clear and not many peopel sign its only dh and I who have picked up on how acurate he is.

Reading, as in how you are reading this post.

This started off as I was a little shocked as I didn't expect a 2 year old to be able to recognise a number abd tell me what it is. I have never told him what an 8 is.
Now I have to define what I mean by reading.

I could read at 2. Yes I mean properly

DeedeePickles · 13/09/2007 23:12

If he can work the microwave, why not set him going with the washing machine, vacuum cleaner, etc.

I really think you're missing a trick here.

NAB3 · 14/09/2007 07:25

Yep, he goes mad if I am doing the washer or drier without him!!

He might also be able to read - who knows? - but don't bother giving him the instruction manuals. Boys never read instructions.

DeedeePickles · 14/09/2007 09:31

Also, don't know if my DS is a genius but he quite likes to watch the washing going round in the machine. Baby TV we call it...

gess · 14/09/2007 09:41

ds1 was reading words aged 2. He has severe learning difficulties (and an exceptionally good visual memory). Which reminds me, need to start a thread about teaching reading....

jellybelly25 · 14/09/2007 09:49

My dd1 learned words from memory at 2.5 was also reading really well at age 4. All kids in our family seem to have read early, weird. She's never been great with numbers but thats prob my fault as neither am I! NAB, I think it sounds cool that your kids can do these things :-) Keep practising with him.

Gess |I would be v interested in your thoughts on teaching kids to read!

NAB3 · 14/09/2007 10:50

I still don't know how he knew it. I haven't told him numbers yet.

He also sets the dishwasher going and knows the 3 buttons to do off by heart. Kids really are amazing, aren't they?

As in reading and looking at them. He can count 2, 3 4 but that is all.

As soon as we get in the car he asks for "my song on" and it was the times tables cd. He just copied them. I think he would like any music though.

jellybelly25 · 15/09/2007 10:30

He's probably remembered it from the CD and other things he's heard. Also, your dd will be like a mine of info for him, my sisters ds2 is just 3 and is at nearly the same level with words/numbers as her ds1 who is 5, he tells him everything he learns so in a funny haphazard way ds2 learns it too.

Get him to press the buttons in lifts etc.

Acinonyx · 15/09/2007 10:58

It's amazing how they pick these things up and I am sometimes astonished when dd says or does something and I feel I had nothing to do with it.

She's 26 mo and has been counting for a while so for her 2nd bday I got her one of those little cash registers and stuff so she could play with the numbers. It's safer than playing with the microwave but similar in action - maybe your dc would enjoy that. Jill

NAB3, i think its great your ds can recognise numbers. my 2 (nrly 3yo) doesnt ........at least i think he doesnt - must go and chk now!!!! (but my ds2 is a lazy little s0d really!!)
