I know the guidelines say 12 months but in reality at what age did your wee ones have milk from a cup rather than bottle even at bedtime??

About 9-10 months I got them off bottles.

Their milk intake went down but they were eating lots of yoghurt, cheese, cereals etc by then so I didn't worry about it.

Done that with all 3.

meandmy · 19/08/2007 23:22

my dd is 14mo and has drank from beakers/cups since 3moish as teats are bad for teeth! she will drink from no lidded cup in day and has a beaker at bedtime

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 19/08/2007 23:28

Got my dd off bottles at 9 months and she used a beaker.Bit of trial and error till we found the right one though!

KTNoo · 20/08/2007 00:00

OK a bit scared now at being shot down. I am a SALT (not working now)so was one of those who used to advise stopping bottles at 12 months. dd1 - never had a bottle, went straight from breastfeeding to cup, with big fight. ds - bottles from 10 months until after 2 years! dd2 - bottles from 9 months and still going strong at 18 months.

I live abroad and the advice on a lot of things is different from what I thought was fact in the UK. I would say there's a massive difference between a toddler drinking milk from a bottle for about 5 mins a couple of times a day and a 3 year old drinking irn bru from a bottle all day long (believe me, I saw this in my working life).

I think some of the advice given by SALTS etc is not intended for those who are actually thinking about these things iyswim.

None of my children have any speech/language difficulties, incidentally.

I think we can relax about these things....

DS was somewhere between 12 and 18 months.

DD still going strong at 22 months. No, now it is past midnight it is 23 months.

It is only at bedtime. And she only has milk in it.

I will get her off them one day...

TheQueenOfQuotes · 20/08/2007 00:06

DS1 never had bottles (bf until 14 months and then wouldn't drink cows milk - just had other drinks from a cup)

DS2 still had one bottle a day until he was well over 2yrs - drank other drinks out of a cup though......

DS3 - watch this space

Tigana · 20/08/2007 00:06

DS is 2 and has been fully off bottle for about 3-6 months now.
Managed to get him off them earlier for water during the day, but not for morning and bedtime milk. Suspect if I had been tougher I could have got him fully off bottle sooner, but Think some of it was my fear that he needed the sucking to get into 'ready to sleep' mode. Plus DH just kept giving him the botle in the mornings when I was at work.

His teeth are fine and he talks for england.

mollymawk · 20/08/2007 00:07

My two both had their bedtime milk in a bottle until about 2yrs and then I stopped the bottle, tried to give it to them in a cup and they both promptly stopped drinking any!

KTNoo · 20/08/2007 00:09

Never gave them juice or water in bottle though, only milk.

arewenearlythereyet · 20/08/2007 00:12

You know your babe better than anyone, and you know what feel about it, so what do you think is best, I never saw a child taking a bottle of milk to university yet....

Tigana · 20/08/2007 00:12

oh..yes, no water /juice in bottle, only ever in beaker.

MyMILisDoloresUmbridge · 20/08/2007 00:35

Ds1 and ds2 were bf till one year but had bottles in nursery. They were Avent bottles so I just switched the teats to spouts.
With ds3 I could hardly get him to take a bottle at all and at 1 year he refused to drink from anything that had a spout/lid of any description! Which is all very good and proper and everything but an absolute pain if you went out in the car/buggy.

mezzer · 20/08/2007 04:07

My dd is 19mo and still has a bottle once a day. I didn't know that I was supposed to be trying to get her to stop. What's wrong with a bottles? I get that you don't want them drinking out of bottles constantly but once or twice a day? Is it really a problem?

slim22 · 20/08/2007 04:15

DS 3.4 still has milk morning and evening in a bottle!

his teeth are OK. I have not noticed any speech delay (started talking at 17 mths).

I don't really see the rationale in stopping?

slim22 · 20/08/2007 04:21

BTW, he drinks everything else from a normal cup. Never used a beaker.

I think the only problem would be if he plays with his bottle. If he sipps very slowly and uses it as a prompt for sleep then you have a problem 'cause prolonged contact with teeth=decay.
You should brush their teeth after milk in the evening.
So the only guideline really is to dissociate evening milk and sleep.
we do shower, milk/cuddle, brush teeth, then story in bed.

Seona1973 · 20/08/2007 19:47

my dd was off bottles by 14 months. DS takes his 3 milk feeds from a lidded cup at 10 1/2 months. He took 8oz from his cow cup tonight: Cow Cup - I got mine in Morrisons but have seen them in Boots too

fibernie · 20/08/2007 19:52

DD gave it up herself at around 15 months - just refused her bedtime bottle (it was the only one she was having from about 10m). It was very convenient of her!

softmusk · 20/08/2007 19:58

dd1 was 12 monthes and dd2 was 10 monthes

Othersideofthechannel · 20/08/2007 20:06

DS 2.6. Hard work weaning
Here in France we don't get told to wean them from bottle early. I have seen 3+ turn up to school sucking from a bottle in the car.
DD age 1. She's so adaptable!

EscapeFrom · 20/08/2007 20:08

ds1 - 2.5 years

ds2 is 16 months and still has one.

I've just read the thread and feel like shit now - ds2 has a SAL delay - I didn't know it was linked to using a bottle.

tortoise · 20/08/2007 20:09

DD1 4 and DD2 3 still have milk in a bottle in the morning and before teeth brushing at night.
Never had juice in a bottle though.

bozza · 20/08/2007 20:09

Both by 12 months.

orangecat · 20/08/2007 20:15

Mine is still having bottle at 25 months. Know I need to wean her off it, but can't face the thought of messing with the lovely 2 hour nap she has after one. 7 months pg and growing, I need the rest!

Doesn't have it at nursery, which I know means she can probably do without at home too.

Will def have to get round to it. Aware of the teeth and brushing afterwards, and she has had no problem with speech - she is actually one of the more advanced for her age.

Must get stronger. Promised myself and everybody around me I would do after 2nd b'day, but too weak...

orangecat · 20/08/2007 20:16

Oh yes, and just milk in bottle, nothing else
