I know the guidelines say 12 months but in reality at what age did your wee ones have milk from a cup rather than bottle even at bedtime??

myh twins kept their morning one to 2yrs and night one up to 2yrs and 3 months - and i wouldn't have told any of my friends who didn't have twins because they all dropped it at recc 12mths, but the twins mums i know all kept it later - the triplets mum is still giving an evening one to 4yr olds - i think it may be something to do with the fear of seeing tiny prem multiples never leaving us and that settling multiples at night is hard with only 2 hands - so a bottlehelps! the dummy usage is quite high too!
i think having sugary fruit juice in it and having it in the day is an issue because of the damage to teeth and language.

mintchips · 20/08/2007 20:18

My ds is 19 months and doesn't want to know about cups. I've bought several types and none have been successful. Still supping several bottles of juice and 2 bottles of milk a day!

Hulababy · 20/08/2007 20:25

When DD got to be 12 months she was reluctant to give up her one morning bottle of milk. She had already dropped her other milk feeds, including a night time one. So I simply swapped the bottle teat to a spout, removing the non spill valve first. She took that no problem and finally gave uo the morning bottle by 18 months. All other drinks she used a cup.

rozzyraspberry · 20/08/2007 20:27

About 11months with my 2. I found they drank more milk out of a cup than a bottle as they could just pick up the cup and drink by themselves.

LaDiDaDi · 20/08/2007 20:30

Dd is 15 months and still enjoying her bottle at bedtime. Started giving water from a cup from about 6 months during the day, cut out all milk other than bedtime milk by 12 months and she still seems to enjoy the bottle though I haven't tried a cup for bed.

dd's one bottle of milk is formula though , haevn't managed to get her to have cow's milk!

madamez · 20/08/2007 20:32

Pretty much off bottles from about 1 - I had Avent magic cups and moved him onto those at about 11 months (mainly due to being on camping holiday and finding the spouts easier to sterilise than teats), then Easyflow cups and those little Tommee Tippee spouted beakers. He was still having a spouted beaker (or easiflow cup) for his milk morning and night, then over the past few months - he is nearly 3 now - he has started insisting 'no lid on, no lid on' and no longer wants milk in the mornings - though eats plenty of yoghurt and cheese.

Thing is, though, he absolutely loves those sports-top bottles of mineral water, so I carry one of those with us when we're out and about - usually refilled with tap water.

Hulababy · 20/08/2007 20:35

LaDiDaDi - DD had one bottle of formula up to about 18 months (see below). She didn't like cow's milk, and at 5yo she still isn't keen and would never chose to drink it.

LaDiDaDi · 20/08/2007 20:46

Good to hear Hulababy. I do feel a bit furtive when I slip a tub of C&G into the troley at the supermarket!

I stopped my DD1 having bottles, when my DD2 decided that she didn't want bottles. DD1 was 5 years and DD2 was 10 months. No problem with speech. DD2 started to speak ( words that you could understand) at around 2 1/2. But my DD2 is now 2 1/2 and is now that she started to speak as well. So I don't think that the bottle was the problem for starting to speak late. Probably that we speak two languages at home.

NAB3 · 20/08/2007 21:06

Mine were full yon cups by 7 months.

MuffinMclay · 20/08/2007 21:48

At about 12 months. I swapped the breakfast bottle for a cup first, then a week or two later did the same witth the bedtime one.

Ds would happily have continued with the bottle for longer though.

onlytheone · 20/08/2007 23:13

Still on bedime bottles at 3.5!!! Think on cups (with spouts at 12 months during day but hard to implement). Bottlefed from 3 weeks and hard to give up. No problems with speech as she was speaking at 12 months and rapidly progressed. She will not drink cows milk so no problem giving it. Night time bottle WILL stop this Christmas!

Nemo2007 · 20/08/2007 23:14

Ds was 18mths
DD1 just gave hers up at 19mths gave up her dummy couple of weeks before the bottle.

Nemo2007 · 20/08/2007 23:16

meant to say she has only had bottle for bed for the past 6mths been on cups in day.
DD2 I cant seem to get her to take anything from a cup/beaker and she is nearly 8mths however DS was the same.

KTNoo · 20/08/2007 23:26

Escapefrom - who told you your ds has language delay at 16 months?????? (see my earlier post)

Apologies if I've misunderstood this but that is too young to make such a claim.

Beenleigh · 20/08/2007 23:27

DD1 22 months, swapped bottle for sippy cup about sa month ago.

Pinkchampagne · 20/08/2007 23:30

Can't remember exactually, but it was around a year I think.

JARM · 21/08/2007 00:01

DD1 gave up bottles at christmas, so was 2.5yrs

DD2 is 22mnths and still has milk in a bottle for nap and bedtime. TBH, she wouldnt drink milk from 10mnths old until 3 months ago, so am happy she is drinking it now.

Will switch her to beaker by her birthday no doubt.

All other drinks are either in sports type bottles or open cups with straws at the table

EscapeFrom · 21/08/2007 00:37

KTnoo

I have 2 ds's, the oldest is four and had a bottle until he was 2.5, and has a 'moderate speech delay'.

Basically he doesn't work his mouth properly.

Youngest ds is 16 months.

mollysmummy77 · 21/08/2007 00:45

Thank you for this post, I've been getting a bit obsessed with this topic myself for the past few months since my dentist told me my 23 month dd had 'prominent front teeth' . I didn't think there was anything wrong with them, they certainly don't look prominent!! We've battled with deciding what to do about her bottle at night for months (She'll drink from cups in the day but not at night)and recently she's drinking from a soft cup spout rather than a teat, which I think is better than nothing, although I'm sure my evil dentist won't agree!

EricL · 21/08/2007 01:09

Give their bottles to Santa at Xmas when they turn 3.

Worked a treat for my eldest - waiting to see if it works agin this Xmas!

EricL · 21/08/2007 01:09

(They only have them for bedtime by the way)

slim22 · 21/08/2007 01:42

Llynn sorry to hijack the post slightly, but I tought we might push the conversation further?

how much milk do your little one have?

DS is 3.5 he gobbles 9 ounces morning and evening. Reading some post I'm wondering wether it's too much?
(He has never accepted and won't have ANY dairy appart from that, and that's also the reason we still on bootles as won't drink cold milk in a cup either!)

mollysmummy77 · 21/08/2007 06:08

my dd drinks at least 9oz morning and night, sometimes she'll have 2 top ups of milk before bed. She will eat cheese til it comes out her ears, but we usually limit her to one serving every day.

babyblue2 · 21/08/2007 07:01

DD1 - 7 months, DD2 went straight from breast to cup.
