DD not standing yet and showing limited interest at nearly 9 months - how late can they stand

Tapster · 02/08/2007 17:43

DD nearly 9 months, had 8 month check yesterday and blasted HV said that she should be standing by now. She holds her legs out when you hold her up! She doesn't crawl but is doing some bum shuffling, which I know means that she will probably walk late. DD is 91st percentile in weight and 98th in height so I think her poor legs and arms can't support her. HV said she would phone in a couple of months to check whether she could stand. DD sat up on her own at 5 months and started to say a few words at 8 months so I doubt if there is anything wrong.

I think she thinks she is 4 handed as she uses her feet as hands often.

My dd2 didn't stand, didn't crawl and just shuffled a bit on her bum until she was 17 months, then she got up and walked. My dd was on the 91st percentile for wieght and height.

No one said anything to me and i didn't worry about it either - although dd1 (who was also on the 91st for both height and weight) had crawled at around 8-9 months and was walking one week after her 1st birthday.

DD1 wasn't even crawling til her first bday.

Don't worry about it.

aloha · 02/08/2007 17:54

9 months sound ridiculously early to be worrying about standing! I diagnose another case of Lunaticus Healthvistitoritis.

elesbells · 02/08/2007 17:55

see thats what gets me with some HV's. they are supposed to help mums not make them feel bad!

tapster your DD is fine, mine didnt stand till 14 months then she just got up and walked. dont worry about it and tell your HV she is an idiot.

Nemo2007 · 02/08/2007 17:56

Does she mean standing or taking weight on her legs? You said that she is holding them out in front does that mean instead of when you hold her she will 'stand' but with you holding or does she automatically lift her legs?
Standing alone is not the 'norm' at 9mths.

indiasmum · 02/08/2007 18:04

dd didnt make any effort to put any weight on legs, walk round furniture or anything til she was 15 months when she just walked, and she walked well. dont think she was going to do any of that embarassing toppling, staggering and humiliating tumbling lol! she waited til she was going to be really good at it before attem, pting anything!!! when we used to hold her hands and lift her to her feet for her to stand she just used to put her legs up and sit down.
totally and utterly nothing to worry about imho. echo what others have said, your hv sounds like a prize plank, perhaps she is bored and wants to fill her time?!

Marne · 02/08/2007 18:05

Dd1 did'nt stand till 15 months, dd2 stood at 9 months, some dont stand till alot later. I think your health visitor is mad

Tapster · 02/08/2007 21:02

Yes she hardly takes weight on her legs, a bit in the last week or two. Well as DD is BLW so she couldn't have a go at me for my DD not eating lumps, plus she is BF and sleeps through most night - she didn't have much else to have a go at me. She added when I said to my DD "you having a bit of a grumpy day" - said smiling and with a sing along voice I was told off for telling her she was grumpy. Also I was told not to say no or don't to her as it would lower herself esteem and I should just try and distract her if she is going for something she shouldn't have. WTF - I say "no eat" when she tries to put dead flies in her mouth - should I distract her instead. Mad HV - and she is the best of the bunch!

Your HV is talking out of her arse, my dd was a bum shuffler and she didn't try standing until she was a year old and dh (also a bum shuffler) didn't walk until 22 months. Bum shufflers are usually late to stand up and walk, it's a well known fact.

gingerninja · 02/08/2007 21:12

Mine's 11 months and still doesn't crawl or pull herself to standing. Don't think it's that uncommon.

Tapster at that last entry. How dare she talk to you like that? You're not a school child. I'd complain personally.

margoandjerry · 02/08/2007 21:14

don't say "no"?????

What are you supposed to say when they lunge for the sockets? "Oh yes darling what lovely little holes for your fingies - clever you".

I'm sorry but what a flaming piece of crap.

She sounds unhinged. My daughter is nearly 10mo and not crawling or standing unaided either.

IdrisTheDragon · 02/08/2007 21:16

DS pulled himself up at about 9.5 months and that was average or earlier than his friends.

DD can't have done it until at least 11 months. Probably later.

They both started walking at 15 months .

madamez · 02/08/2007 21:18

DS didn't stand up till about a fortnight before his first birthday and didn't walk till he was 15 months. He's nearly 3 now and running around all over the place. DOn't give it a moment's thought (oh and we got referred to a physio because he wasn't sitting unaided at 9 months and the HV said' he's a bit floppy' even though I'd TOLD her that DS had fallen asleep on the way to the clinic and only just woken up when we got there, so he was a bit groggy). I rang the physiotherapist when the letter came through offering an appointment to say he was sitting up fine and crawling and they said there was nothing to worry about then.

divastrop · 02/08/2007 21:21

dont say 'no' as it will lower her self esteem?

my dd2 was late crawling, standing etc etc.i didnt even bother taking her to the HV as i knew she was fine and i didnt want to be made to feel like she wasnt.

seriously...what are you meant to say to a baby/toddler who is about to do something dangerous?they have to learn what no means, you cant keep on distrcting them forever.[bewildered]

mistlethrush · 02/08/2007 21:24

Another HV with no child of her own?

My mw was similarly crap!

Pay no attention. HV talking complete rubbish. Ds was sitting alone at 5mo, but not walking until 14.5mo - at which point he could also run around kitchen table (day 2 of walking unaided!).

When HV rings back, tell her to find a more appropriate child to spend her time on - there are plenty of them out there.

jandeb · 02/08/2007 23:40

my ds did not sit-up till 10 months, crawled at 16 months, walked at 22 months.
HV was concerned but doctor said he had a strong structure and would be great when he got round to it.
DS is now 13 years and still takes his time
doing these everyday things, but he is perfect!

Tapster · 03/08/2007 09:42

HV has 3 grown up children of her own. Thought the "no" comment particularly hilarious. Also being told off at my age for saying grumpy (I'm not that far off 40) was also highly amusing. I think I threw her by saying I put her down awake. She was all ready with her lecture it was very funny.

Reassuring that alot of you had LOs that stood/crawled/walked late. My mother died when I was young so I have no idea if I was a bum shuffler but I'm presuming I was as DH wasn't. Its difficult when you haven't got your own mother to ask what did I do.

gingerninja · 03/08/2007 09:57

That must be hard Tapster, my mum can't remember tho so she's not much help anyway. They are all very different aren't they? I like to think that my DD is sitting smugly watching her chums fall over and bash into things so when she does finally go she can glide around perfectly. Plus she does have me and DH as slaves so doesn't feel the need to move

mumeeee · 03/08/2007 21:35

Some 9 month old babies do stand but most don't stand until about 11 months. I work in a nursery where thewre are some 12 month ols walking on thre own and others of the same age only just crawling. So don't worry and ignore your HV

Clayhead · 03/08/2007 21:42

My ds didn't stand until he was about 18 months.

I kept him well away from my health visitor (lesson learnt with late walker, bum shuffler dd).

mozzybear · 03/08/2007 21:47

Ahh, if it wasn't for these loony tunes HV.MW, what would we talk about?

My DS is also 9 month and can roll and thats about it, can't sit, can't crawl although he seems to be trying to pull himself up. I can see that he's slowly developing so not overly worried He's also on the 9th centile (or was last time I checked . HV seem to leave you alone a bit more in Scotland, haven't seen mine since DS' last jabs at 5mo.

SOme of these HV are crackers, aren't they?

stleger · 03/08/2007 21:53

My ds sat up unaided at 9 months. I was told that 'taller' babies are later as they have to develop a longer nervous system down spine and legs...not sure if that is true! Or if hv was being kind.
