DD not standing yet and showing limited interest at nearly 9 months - how late can they stand

DD nearly 9 months, had 8 month check yesterday and blasted HV said that she should be standing by now. She holds her legs out when you hold her up! She doesn't crawl but is doing some bum shuffling, which I know means that she will probably walk late. DD is 91st percentile in weight and 98th in height so I think her poor legs and arms can't support her. HV said she would phone in a couple of months to check whether she could stand. DD sat up on her own at 5 months and started to say a few words at 8 months so I doubt if there is anything wrong.

I think she thinks she is 4 handed as she uses her feet as hands often.

My ds is only crawled at 15 months, pulled himself up to standing at 17 months, and now at 19 months we are still waiting for him to walk. HVs aren't too concerned, neither are we - he doesn't do anything he doesn't want to, stubbornness appears to be part of his personality. (sigh!)

mozzybear · 03/08/2007 22:12

I was worried when he wasn't sitting up at 6 months, but then I came to mumsnet and it was full of mums who were worried about the same sort of stuff. I don't need to ask HV stuff, I just log on

jandeb · 03/08/2007 22:12

your ds sounds like my ds fee who is no 13 and still takes his time with everything he does, very layed back everyone says, even if they have just met him.

thefizzyone · 03/08/2007 22:25

My ds (10 months) was completele inert until 3 weeks ago. Then he sat, then crawled, and now is pulling to standing - aaarrgghhh.

I thought he was going to stay a baby for ever (

berolina · 03/08/2007 22:29

ds pulled himself up to stand at just over 7 months, but he was (and is) a tiny little thing - took my friend's top-centile ds a lot longer, IIRC. But both of them are just fine now (And my ds wasn't even an amazingly early walker - walked at 14 months)

CarGirl · 03/08/2007 22:30

Mine wouldn't be stood up by anyone until she was walking at 17 months, she started pulling herself up to stand about 14 months I think.

Tapster · 03/08/2007 22:46

Your comments are so reassuring as I went to a class today and it did seem that my DD was the only one not standing/crawling/walking so I do tend to get a bit paranoid. She did seem to be the biggest baby and has very long legs and I'm the smallest mother (only 5ft and quite tiny) - I'm sure some of them must of thought I was the nanny

Am at the bit about not saying 'no' and 'don't' to your dd. You only have to look around at some people in society today to see what happens when children don't learn what NO means.

Lowers their self esteem my arse.

mozzybear · 05/08/2007 21:00

Crikey, NO is my most used word at the moment!

I don't think DS will ever crawl, why crawl when you can roll. DH was the same apparently.

BTW, does anyone know what sort of age you should worry about these things? is it just a case of if there is steady development, its fine.

suwoo · 05/08/2007 21:07

There seems to be no continuity with HV. DD (now 5) could pull herself up to stand and was crawling and cruising at 7 months. When she had her check, HV told me I should discourage her as she was too young to be doing such things . DS is 7.5 months and has been sitting unaided for about a month and has just started taking steps when you hold his hands. He is at that point where he will NOT bend to sit, and wants to stand all the time.

mozzybear · 05/08/2007 22:03

LOL! Su. I never heard of discouraging development before, you've got a cracker there!

suwoo · 05/08/2007 22:24

It was a fella too Really don't want to start any kind of debate, but a male HV with no kids, I felt at the time was a bit wrong

orangehead · 05/08/2007 22:36

my ds2 still didnt move at 12 months, not crawling not standing Im sure if I left him sat in middle of room 4 two hrs he would of been in same place when I came back (never tried it) but 2 weeks after 1st bd he got up and walked.
Ds1 crawled at 4 months by 6 mths he was super fast at crawling and stood at 6 and half months but he didnt walk till about same time as ds2, well 1 week earlier. Basically I wouldnt worry u just never know what kids are going to do next. Some hv can really panic, but they going off average charts but every child different

Most HV-talk-out-of-their-arse FACT they routinely have a knack of undermining you/your baby..my bubba did the lollop (a weird lunge/crawl) at 9month so dont worry about your gorgeous DD

I say "no" all the time, i'm tempted to record it onto a dictaphone to save my voice, lol.

Dont worry, really, each baby does things in his or her own time when they're good and ready to and not a moment before.

Like mumee i've worked in baby rooms in nurserys and had some who are walking at 1yr and some who've only just started the pre-crawl rocking.

I wish DS was a bit slower, i've got a walker at 11mo old and he's driving me nuts with practically running. Enjoy the lack of mobility while it lasts.

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/08/2007 23:28

My ds2 just lay there or sat still till 11 months then went from pulling himself up, to cruising, to walking by 13m.
I could have got into a panic, as ds1 pulled himself up at 7m, never crawled at all, cruised around till 11m then walked. But to be honest I was really happy to only have one of them mobile (16m gap) so ds2 did tend to have everything placed within his reach .
If she has started to say words at 8m then compared to my two she is a genius!!!!
I sometimes wonder if babies brains can't let them learn everything at the same rate -so they do some things earlier than others, sounds like your daughter is an advanced speaker so why bother about the walking?

floopowder · 05/08/2007 23:30

My Dd did this tapster, she didn't sit up until 9 months, my parents went away for to weeks leave a baby that had to be propped up and came back to a baby that was crusing around the funiture. In two weeks she did the lot. She then went on to walk at 10.5 months biggest shock of my old ma's life. BTW my ds didn't walk until he was 43 months.
As for your HV she is talking out of her arse.

floopowder · 05/08/2007 23:31

Sorry about my spellings I am tired and covered in bites from the pesky mosquitos in my back yard.

Desiderata · 05/08/2007 23:32

I've only read the OP, but there's no way most babies are standing at eight months. It happens quickly when it does ... mine was nine months when he first stood unaided - but I agree that with your dd's percentiles, she isn't going to necessarily be a fast one on that.

Nature will dictate, and it will all be for the best.

Twinklemegan · 05/08/2007 23:50

My DS is one and is only just standing unaided. He's been cruising for about a month I'd say. He's so active and bright it wouldn't even occur to me to be worried. HVs seem to delight in worrying parents.

samanthar · 06/08/2007 13:48

ds twin was still not weightbearing at 14 mths
consulatnt said bring him back if not standing at 18 nths so you have a little while to go yet

DontCallMeBaby · 06/08/2007 13:56

I swear my HVs (all three of 'em) missed the day at HV-school when they get their common sense and tact removed. They were all great.

DD would not bear weight at all until she pulled herself up at 14 months, her legs would just fold under her. I was less concerned than I might have been, given that my friend's DD at the same age would actually pull her feet up if anyone attempted to stand her up. She didn't bum-shuffle or roll either, so was completely immobile until 14 months (she crawled a week after she first pulled up).

She's now 3.5 at hasn't sat down since she got up this morning.
