did your Lo's stop using the bed guard or rather when did you take it off?
DD is 4 and has a lovely pink bed guard, but we are getting her a new bed and the wooden one we want wont fit the guard.
we have tried to take the guard off about 8 months ago, but every night we found her on the floor several times as she kind of snuggles into it.
what can i do?, as new bed is quite high opposed to current one, so if we just leave it off it quite a drop to the floor!

leave it off with spare duvet/cushions on the floor. She get used to it not been there quite quickly I imagine.

bundle · 12/06/2007 16:27

never had one. i turned the duvet round on their cotbeds when i took off the sides, and tucked it in under the mattress.they only fell out a couple of times.

PinkChick · 12/06/2007 16:27

well shes in alcove in bedroom at minute so partial wall near her head, so wouldnt want her to wack herself!

thats a good idea, but shes a hot bod and wont keep covers on..though i could try 'prooping' one side of the matress up so she rolls to side nearest wall???

Ours didn't fit properly and after about a week of falling out every night it dropped to a couple of times a week and now not at all. we were putting big cushions on the floor for ages just incase but they kind of 'train' themselves not to fall out after a while. I certainly haven't done it in ages so must have grown out of it at some point!

PinkChick · 12/06/2007 16:46

hmm, might put large cushion near wall, then duvet/cushions on floor near her to see how she gos until we get new bed, this on is cot bed so low..

Good point, i prob wouldn't have chanced it if she was in anything very far from the ground.

PinkChick · 12/06/2007 19:47

right...she has one of my pillows against the wall, spare duvet on floor and her duvet swapped round so its tucked under on 'open' side of bed(where guard was)..she keeps saying shes not sure about this..bless..will see how many times i have to get up to see if its worth it

DD has never had a bed guard at all.
She had the toddler bed and I put the cot mattress on the floor beside it in case she fell out and it was like that for a coupe of months and she never ever fell out until the night I took it away for the first time. when she went into a full size bed she was fine, she has fallen out of bed a handful of times.
I think as your dd has had hers so long that she has got used to it being there and is now part of what she gets comfy on when she goes to sleep, won't take long for her to snuggle into the wall side instead.

mylittleimps · 12/06/2007 21:11

my ds's didn't like them so didn't use them, one side against the wall and each requested(!) a suitcase the other side when the time came moving into a bed. worked well.

would suggest pillows/duvets on the floor

Mum07 · 13/06/2007 08:32

not sure about this... bless her. Thing is, if they do fall out it's not a disaster, mine didn't even wake up... well not til dh went in to check on her and slammed the door into her head! No damage done but i did wake her up fully and get her to count my fingers like they do in films when someone hits their head. Not sure what this is for but made me feel better!

Blueblob · 13/06/2007 09:53

Is she in a toddler bed atm?

It's just that both mine never got the hand of a toddler bed without a guard but bigger beds havn't been a problem. They're both wriggly sleepers.

PinkChick · 13/06/2007 09:53

hi all, well alst night i laid spare duvet on floor with pillow aginst wall..she 'fell' out once and didnt even know she had, she was laid fast asleep on duvet.BUT..and i know this is first day..the new bed we want it wooden framed normal height single bed, so not quite as high as a divan but higher than this..so do i after a week or so, remove the duvet so dd knows when shes fallen out to try and make her consious of leaning other way in time for new bed or what?

OP posts:
PinkChick · 13/06/2007 09:54

hiya sorry, yes shes in large cot bed obv with no sides, just looks like smaller single bed, but is very tall and growing out of it.

OP posts:
bozza · 13/06/2007 09:57

Yes just keep going. Both of mine went into full size single beds at 2 and had bedsides for about a year. Well less in DD's case - we got rid of hers about March when she was 2.10.

PinkChick · 13/06/2007 10:04

right, well think ill keep duvet there rest of week then take it away so although its only soft and about inch thick, the floor will feel harder if she falls out and may make her lean other way?, does that sound cruel??

Mum07 · 13/06/2007 12:30

I think she'll just stop falling out quite soon either way, not sure if it makes a difference what the consequence is (i.e. whether she falls onto duvet or hard floor) as it's not a conscious decision she's making, they just start getting used to not having cot bars around them which restrict their movements.

I didn't get DD a bedside table until she'd stopped falling out as i was worried she'd hurt herself on it but we stuff a cushion between it and the bed (initially so she wouldn't whack herself on the corner if she did fall out) which i guess is sort of acting like a barrier.

adath · 13/06/2007 12:48

The thing is a full sized single bed is actually a lot wider than a cot/toddler bed so she may not fall out at all.

PinkChick · 13/06/2007 20:11

yeah your right..will see how tonight gos if she ever gos to sleep

OP posts:
hotbot · 13/06/2007 20:45

pop old mattress by the side of the\bed for a few nights. easier to clear up and yuo can just push it back under the bed

PinkChick · 13/06/2007 22:23

good thinking just said that to dp too

ChasingSquirrels · 13/06/2007 22:25

never had one, ds went into a bed (cot bed coverted from cot) at 2y3m. he did used to enjoy sleeping underneath it a friend put a rolled up towel under the bed mattress at the non-wall side to raise it slightly.

PinkChick · 14/06/2007 08:18

yeah i might try that with new bed as its higher..dd slept straight through last night and didnt fall out once...finers crossed!

teejay · 14/06/2007 08:26

my son went straight into a big bed with no guard at 2. He fell out a few times but duvets and pillows on the floor were fine- in fact he didnt wake up a couple of times. The only issue is getting up early and coming into our room to wake us up, but that' got to happen some time I guess

kath81 · 14/06/2007 10:48

My dd is 3 and i took her bedguard off on tuesday cos she had a tummy bug and it made it easier to get out for any emergency rtips to the loo. She hasn't fallen out yet...
