What age did your LO start wanting a security blanket?

My DS2 aged 10 weeks seems to enjoy having a muslin to hang onto. As far as I'm concerned this is A Good Thing if it helps him sleep. But will he suffocate on it in the night??

No he wont. My DD age 1 always has her mslin with her. she loves it!

Egg · 04/06/2007 17:35

My DS didn't get attached to his "blankie" until he was about 6 months old, but he goes straight to sleep the minute he gets blankie and it is a GODSEND. Terrified of losing it though, a muslin is far better, easy to replace!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 04/06/2007 20:38

Ds used to suck his thumb. He dropped this at 6 months for his winnie pooh blankie which he still takes to bed at 2.5

I think it's a good thing. At least a muslin is easy to replace too! Have recently bought 2 more winnie pooh's on ebay just incase!

Genidef · 04/06/2007 21:58

DD took it up at over two!

LazyLine · 04/06/2007 22:03

DS frantically sucked the labels on his soft toys from about 5 months. They got disgusting so I bought him a taggie. It is now, at roughly 2, his best friend.

mandymac · 04/06/2007 22:07

DD got attached to her 'mus' at about 4 months and I have to say I encouraged it, as I figured it was easy to replace. She now sleeps with 2 of them at nearly 2 years old.

REIDmylips · 04/06/2007 22:09

my ds is attached to his muslin too, has been since he was about 6 months old and he sleeps with it everynight.

Beauregard · 04/06/2007 22:12

My dd2 started sleeping with a muslin and then we gave her a beautiful comforter someone bought us when she was born and now she wouldn't sleep without it.
Actually she has 2 because we went and bought a 'replacement'one should it become lost and somehow she has ended up with both.
She sleeps with them near her face.

lillochum · 04/06/2007 22:25

I quite deliberately got my children to use muslins (we called them "lullas" - the name I knew them by as a child), as comforters. Muslins are replaceable, washable, and don't threaten their teeth or speech like a dummy. DD1 and DS1 both gave them up quite naturally, but DD2 is still firmly attached to hers at 7yrs. I was a bit worried by this as her second teeth are starting to come through, but according to one mumsnetter she still has her muslin comforters at 30+ and has perfect teeth! So, I have given up worrying.

lucykate · 04/06/2007 22:39

both of mine started with them at 6 months, ds has a woven green pram blanket, luckily we have 2, and likes to sleep with it bunched up on his cheek. dd is 5 and still has hers, its only small though, its called snuggy.

specialmagiclady · 06/06/2007 14:51

Hmm... looks like most of your kids took up comforter at a bit older. Will continue to let him have one if he wants one but probably not at night - last night it was over his face a bit when I looked at him. My DS1 was attached to his teletubby, dipsy and his rabbit for about a year. When they both accidentally went into storage for a few months, we had frantic hunt to replace them. For a while there, he had to have BOTH Dipsies with him at all times. Now he seems to not be that bothered. Which makes us sad... our little boy growing up!

one daughter was almost 1.5 - we were away visiting my family and she really latched onto a fleecy scarf of mine ( that maybe smelled like her own home?) when we got home I bought some fleece from JL and sewed up a little blanket for her. She woudn't be without it now, she's almost 6 ( blanky has been around the world...god forbid if we ever lost it!!)

younger daughter has just started wanting one too, she's 2.6, but I think that's just becuase she is copying older dd.

Lilymaid · 06/06/2007 14:55

And my DS2 still has the shreds of his (cellular wool blanket with satin binding) that is in regular use during his GCSE revision sessions!

woopsadaisy · 06/06/2007 15:05

my dd has a muslin she calls a 'cuddle'
she only has it and wants it when its out, so shes fine without it for weeks, but if she is being a bit difficult to get to bed i give it to her and she goes right off!! (dd is 27 mnths)

i hate it when older children drag around dirty wet blankie things and then put them in there mouths, like when going round sainsburys it really makes me uurgh!

blueshoes · 06/06/2007 15:08

My dd never took to a comforter, or dummy, or thumb or anything. She was the world's sleeper. Seems the same with ds 8 months

blueshoes · 06/06/2007 15:09

world's worst sleeper

nooka · 06/06/2007 15:11

ds still has his at eight. It was fantastic when he was younger (I can't remember when I put it in with him, but then again I can't remember him not having it either) but now it is a smelly little rag (he's not keen on having it washed as he knows each wash shortens it's life!). Once upon a time it was a flanelette pram sheet...

tarantula · 06/06/2007 15:12

Glad I'm not the only one whose kids have taken up a comforter late. dd is 3 and now has her 'hiding cushion' (made from an old nightie of mine and stuffing from an old pillow). Had no idea she'd suddenly latch onto it.

LuckyMama · 06/06/2007 15:24

Oj 20mths has recently become very attached to his baby and has to take it everywhere at the minute! Last week i managed to get him a replacement (baby has seen better days)and he has now taken to having both of them with him!

LIZS · 06/06/2007 15:31

dd has had her teddy comforter - teddy head on a fabric/muslin "skirt" - since one day old and is now almost 6 ! Has been sucked, chewed, stuck up nose, repaired, stroked, puked on, washed (occasionally ! ), lost , found .... Your ds2 will be fine

lizziemun · 06/06/2007 15:44

DD had her muslin from about that age now 3 1/2 and still has hers when she is tired. It doesn't bother as i have plenty and keep them washed.

On a slightly different note my mum (in her 50's) has just got rid of her pillow that she has had since a very small child. As far as i can tell she is normal, and has no long lasting effects.

LuckyMama · 06/06/2007 15:47

To LIZS i think she has the same sort of comforter as OJ! He`s not opposed to me washing it but i am glad to hear it has a long life span only heaven help me if we ever loose it! (and never find it!)

LIZS · 06/06/2007 16:50

We have a spare but when we did lose Teddy she wasn't interested in it. fortunately she turned up a few days later [phew emoticon] Also have imported spare fabric from Germany to redo the skirt, only the head is original now !!

yomellamoHelly · 06/06/2007 17:04

Ds1 (3 1/2) has had so much fun with his teddy that we are trying to get ds2 attached to something. Ds1 chose his teddy from a range of cuddlies, square and blanket that I always left in his cot when he was 8.5 months. I think it was the huge label that swung it for him. Ds2 doesn't have one yet, though he is only 5.5 months and has his thumb too - so I'm not sure if he'll choose one.
It really helped with leaving ds1 with babysitters and at creche, and later pre-school (never mind all the adventures they have together).
Ds1 is finally starting to grow out of him, though. For 18 months they went everywhere together and we've been through about 25 teddies due to losses and excessive chewing/adventures. Thankfully he was from Ikea - so dead cheap/easy to replace.

kittypants · 06/06/2007 17:05

my ds has a toy cow he sucks.so not a blankie but still comforter.he often has it in his mouth or just twiddles it.im dreading the day we may lose it.
