What time do your kids go to bed?

Just wondered what other parents do.

DS aged 7 starts getting ready for bed around 7pm, bath/shower etc. He is usually in bed by or before 7.30pm and has story time, cuddle and song and goes to sleep. Usually all asleep by 8pm. At weekend I let him stay up a little later to watch Dr Who.

Lots of other parents seem to have later bedtimes for their kids. DS hasnt complained about bedtime being 7.30 and goes to bed when asked.

DS is 7. He goes to bed at 7.30, no complaints.

DD1 and DD2 (6 and 3) go to bed at around 6.30.
It means I get a bit of time with DS. He prefers factual books as his stories so he listens to the girls story and then has his own story when they go to bed. I also hear him read when they are in bed.

Works quite well in our house, until something delays the girls bedtime then DS wants to go later too.

Dd is 20 months and is normally in bed between 7-7.30pm depending on when dh gets in from work, how organised we are etc but mostly by 7pm. Seems to spend more time chatting and playing now she's in her big bed but usually asleep within the hour. Always very grateful that she goes down at this time and so well most of the time as she's incredibly active through the day.

charlottelouise · 21/05/2007 20:00

my dd goes to bed 7.30 - 8, most nights, luckily if its later than that she doesnt usually get grouchy, and will sleep later the next morning (a godsend at weekends!)

JodieG1 · 21/05/2007 20:03

My dd and ds1 go to bed between 6 and 7pm usually at the later end at weekends. We go up and have a wash and brush teeth, stories then bed. There's no real set time though it's just when they're tired. They both get up between 5 and 6am most mornings so they need to get to bed earlier to make up for it. I did try moving bedtimes later to get them (particularly ds1) to sleep later in the mornings but it didn't work and they just ended up grumpy instead.

bambi06 · 21/05/2007 20:41

can i ask everyone ona similar issue as to what age do your lot learn to bath themselves?

smellymelly · 22/05/2007 11:59

I have found living in France our bedtimes are constantly questioned. In the UK it was about 7pm ish!
The same here in the winter, but in the summer between 8-9pm, at the moment, ds1 7 dd1 4.5, and the dts 2.5

Ds1 went for his 1st sleepover last sat night, and he went to bed at 3am !! I was not impressed, personally I think that is incredibly irresponsible! He was so tired on sunday night he threw up.

americantrish · 22/05/2007 13:43

ds (2 3/4) - wakes around 5.30am-6am, sometimes has a mid-day nap (sometimes not because of nursery or not wanting to), and goes to bed by 7pm-7.30pm.

GateGipsy · 22/05/2007 14:28

DS, 2, goes to bed usually between 7 and 8pm. It varies depending on daylight saving hours. So in the summer he is ready to go to bed at 7pm, then in the winter it is 8pm.

You could almost set your watch by it. This is the time he wants to go to bed, and therefore this is the time he will go to bed. If we don't notice the time he will let us know, usually with a sound telling off.

Unless hubs is on shift. Then he doesn't get home until after 9pm, and DS will try to keep himself awake for as long as possible. Last night he fell asleep in my lap at 8:30.

Growing up my bed time was always 7:30, until I was around 12 or so. Even now, the opening music for Coronation Street makes me feel sleepy.

sparklygothkat · 22/05/2007 14:34

reading this makes me feel normal.
DD1 (6) and DD2(5) go to bed at 7pm, and DS (9) goes at 7:30pm and reads to 8pm. I popped out the other day in the evening, it was about 10pm, and bumped into one of my neighbours. She asked if my kids were asleep, and she looked shocked when I said 'yes, they are, they are with DH' and she asked me what time they went to bed, so I told her. It was 10pm, and her kids were still awake

Tortington · 22/05/2007 14:36

LittleEgg · 22/05/2007 14:45

DS - 15 months - about 7:15pm. It is supposed to be 7pm but it has slipped a bit.

saffymum · 22/05/2007 14:49

Hi ladies, are all these people whose kids go to bed at 6:30 and before 8 using drugs or something? How on earth do you do this? My DS (3) won't go to bed before 9 and is up at 6:30. Its exhausting, he is at full time nursery so we do want to spend time with him when we get home but we don't sit down until well after 9:30 some nights as he keeps getting out of bed. Anyone got any tips? I only let him sleep 1 hr in the day but sometimes the nursery lets him sleep 1,5 hours.

Daughter 2 (9 nearly 10)- 8:30-9 (up at 8)
Daughter 1 (12)- 9 (up at 7)
Son (13 nearly 14)- 9-10 (up at 6)

We try to get them all out of sight by 9:30 so we can have a few minutes' peace.

duchesse · 22/05/2007 15:05

saffysmum- I'm sorry, but some children just need less sleep than others. You didn't want to hear that, I'll wager. It's jolly hard work, I know.

oliveoil · 22/05/2007 15:05

dd1 (4) and dd2 (2) both in bed and asleep by 7pm

prettymum · 22/05/2007 15:06

prettymum, am very [envy} my dd (9 months) still waking several times through the night

agree with you duchesse, some children just seem to need less sleep, ds (now 12) slept really well unless ill or teething. he's still a nightmare to get up in the a.m although i guess thats impending teendom
