Is 13m a bit young for...

...full on tantrums where he stamps his feet, screams, throws himself on the floor and bangs his head? I wasn't expecting this for another few months or so.

Unfortunately not. Tamtrums start anytime in that second year IME.

It's been a bit of a shock and it's really hard not to laugh, especially when he stamps his feet, but they seem to have got more frequent over the last week.

nope, it is down to frustration with inability to communicate or physical limitations so ime that can strike any time towards the end of babydom!

It's quite young - just tell yourself he's very advanced.

My niece used to do the head banging thing around that age. My DD tried it put was more measured and eased her head down gently on to the floor .

I can absolutely tell he's frustrated and he particularly does it when I stop him doing something he wants to do so he's definitely testing boundaries. Is the best thing to ignore them or to try and calm him down?

If he is safe , leave him where he is and ignore then make a fuss as he calms down , if he is head banging or may hurt himself fidn a soft beanbag or cushion on the floor and put him down and ignore etc. when you start to identify potential flashpoints try to distract him before he gets that far.

Hi Sunyshineymummy - I am in the same boat with one of my 13 month old twins. She has started to have proper little strops - screams and goes rigid when put into the buggy and bangs her head on her highchair when she doesn't like the food offered! It's taken me by surprise too as she's a happy little soul and has never made a fuss before.

I find distracting her works and if it escalates it's best just to ignore her. She usually plays up when hungry or tired. I have to remind myself she's not being "naughty" - she just doesn't know how to deal with the situation.

Mine has just started this at 15 months. She banged her head the first time and now she sits very carefully on her bottom and then lies down slowly so she doesn't hit her head but screaming the whole time very hard not to laugh

I've just started having this too when I stop ds doing something he really wants to do (play with the grill, climb in dog's water bowl etc, play with bleach) or really doesn't want (have his nails trimmed, teeth cleaned, medicine applied etc).

Much going red in the face, thrashing of limbs, stamping, and very loud screaming (and that's just me ).

No. ignore and walk away. don't be too concerned over head banging. theres no need for them to do it without an audience.

The foot stamping is brilliant. He's only been walking for a month so he's still a bit unsteady so I honestly have to try v. hard not to laugh.

Don't want to depress you, but once it starts it can go on a long time - my dd started stropping at 2 and really only stopped when she was 10! I'm enjoying a lull now before the teenage tantrums start!

My 12 month old dd does this. She is learning some pretty good techniques from her 2 year old brother, it's almost impressive!

when walking with ds 15 months he will decide he wants to crawl into the road, explore up someones drive,i try & turn round when he's got a walker truck he goes mad wants to walk where he wants, he falls on the floor in aheap won't move goes all limp and cries of course, find it easy to pick him up and distract him. same with anything i take off him too, keep trying the distraction thingy, it works most of the time

Ohh poor you, my 17 month old does this when yu do something like take a biro out of her hand. It makes us laugh tbh but it;s mad. I though terrible 2's started at 2+ but no!

He had one ysterday in Peter Jones when I tried to stop him going onto the escalator by himself. Foot stamping, down on the floor, banging his head! I'm going to be one of those mummys people look at disdainfully!

My 15m DS started doing this a few weeks ago. Luckily his favourite thing at the moment is a big shiny ball. So a few bounces of the big shiny ball and a couple of 'oooh, look! ball!' remarks distract him sufficiently. I suspect it will be more difficult as he grows...

DS has a few tantrums (13 months) whe toys get stuck, or I take the car keys or something else he shouldn't have off him, I find it cute (don't show it though)

Ah I love it when they do that ! It doesnt last for ever, mine are much older now and I kind of miss their little strops. Bless them. Have a laugh and enjoy it as a sideshow! Dont let it get to you !

i know all kids are totally different BUT he may be like dd2.
she satrted full on foot stamping, screaming tatrums at 13 months and now at just turned 2 she has a huge vocab and hardly ever throws a wobbly.
you may be lucky
start early, stop early
