What *should* a 21 be able to do?

I knwo my dd is limited a little due to her light weight and physical immaturity, as she has Noonan Syndrome albeit mildly, but what I would like to know is what did or do most 21 mths olds do with their time?
What tpys have they mastered, do they know colours? Can they mimic words from the off?
I am trying to establish how far behind my dd could be or whether she is within the normal remit for her age, my HV is thick as large plank, and I do not want to be referred yet agian if I am not sure there is a problem, my elder child ds 10yrs was an astonishlingly able child and did everything early, so I do not know what is normal, I cannot compare any child to him let alone my diddy girl.
Also anyone who had a slow starter, how did they evolve?
I must sounds paranoid and yes I know she is young to be worrying but... you just do..

I would love to see photos and I am glad it has helped you to talk about it.
I looked up dd's charts - at 22 months she was 78cm tall and weiged 23lb3oz. She also has tiny feet - still in a size 5, her first pair of shoes were a 3, but only because they didn't have any proper walking shoes in a smaller size (I think she was 2.5) this was at about 16 months I think.

Six new words! That is fast learning! My ds (5) was a big baby (doubled his birthweight in 7 weeks!) and I always joke that if I had had dd first they would be the same size!

Wallace · 24/07/2004 20:29

She really does sound delightful BTW. Dd spends a lot of time whinging at the moment...

Is her small size part of Noonan's syndrome? Can you remind me as well which heart defect she has?

Piffleoffagus · 24/07/2004 20:41

she has a mild pulmonary stenosis, which is basically a narrow valve... not enough to affect her day to day life or health and not worsening so we are really relieved about that.
Yes short stature and low weight gain in the first 2-3 yrs is a part of Noonan Syndrome, although of late has started on a new supplement and has gone from the 0.4 centile to the 9th within probably, 2-3 months of starting it.
here is a link to her pages...
15 mths plus is here

I have more recent ones but not on that site as I converted to mumsnet shortly after that!!!

Hi Piff, my dd is also 21 months (born 10 October, how about yours?), is also small (though syndrome-free as far as we know so far). She weighs 20lbs and is, I think, about 80c.m. high.

It sounds to me like your dd is doing really well. And like all toddlers doing some things earlier than others. My dd can't throw a ball to save her life, just sort of shuffles it on the ground with her toe, yawns and walks off . She can't walk up stairs without either holding onto a bar her height, my hand or semi-climbing them. She's pretty good with language, copies all sorts of words now and does mini sentences but as far as colours go she mostly guesses when I ask her to tell me the colour of something. In terms of playing she likes 'colouring' in her colouring book (though it's more like scribbling all over the pictures of course!), she's mad on books, she does a lot of 'imaginative' play with toys (often copying things I do / say with her in daily life), she's so-so at things like shape-sorters - sometimes interested, sometimes very frustrated by them, she can't do jigsaws and she can build with simple bricks but doesn't seem to want to be arsed with that. I think that's about all.

So where's your photos then?

Piffleoffagus · 24/07/2004 20:57

piffle - it asks me for a username and password for the photos.

I was reading something about Noonan's (link from thread on special needs) and it mentions pigeon chest...Does your dd have this? I was just wondering because my dd has, but mildly, they say it was caused by her surgery.

strangerthanfiction · 24/07/2004 21:35

Same here, Piffle, couldn't get to the photos .

Hulababy · 24/07/2004 21:39

pigeon chest...
hmmm not sure she has too muhc of one to be honest, she does have the NS quite mildly by all accounts though, she has a short neck with a few wrinkles, but it is not noticeable, most folks would not differentiate her from other babies in the pram for instance...

Did you enjoy Legoland as well?

Piffleoffagus · 24/07/2004 22:18

Managed to get on to the other babyworld site - turns out I was a member all along!

She is lovely - I see what you mean she is so happy, and what a gorgeous name

roisin · 24/07/2004 22:23

I'm delighted to hear you had a good day with ds too. We've loved Legoland in the past, but we used to be within easy driving distance - too far for us to trek now.

Wallace · 24/07/2004 22:36

What am I still doing up!!!???!!!

I was gripped by an urge to show you pics of my dd

She is almost 22 months in the photos, and is 4 months post-op. You can see her scar if you look closely - it goes across her chest, where her bra-line will be. In one of the photos you can see a slight bump, this was when her pigeon chest was just starting to appear. It got a lot worse, but is now getting better again.

I am also having a giggle to myself as I have realised she is still wearing those trousers - they are age 12-18 months!

I had better give you the link - just set up a photobucket account here
password mumsnet (sorry nicked it!)

Hulababy · 25/07/2004 16:32

Piffleoffagus - photos are really lovely; like the one of DD in the fridge

Glad you enjoyed Legoland. We are hoping to go this Friday so long as the weather looks okay.

Hulababy · 25/07/2004 16:34

What a cutie Wallace Lovely smile she has!

Piffleoffagus · 25/07/2004 19:51

she looks fab Wallace, so similar in size and build to my Ems... What heart problem did your dd have? What did they do to fix it? Must have been so scary for you, we faced all sorts of shitting ourselves times when Ems was diagnosed with massive ASD and her stenosis too. Thankfully under a proper echo scan she had no ASD at all... We were told she could die, words cannot express my panic, even now I still wonder if they got it wrong and she still might die...I get tears just recalling that awful few days. We are seen at Southampton, which is awesome....

Ems has to have her tear ducts unblocked on 15th sept, she has runny eyes so this should help her there.
Today she started proper 4 point crawling after a lifetime of belly crawling!
Bizarre but should help her stomach muscles...
She slept in today til 9am going to bed at 7pm yesterday, exhausted...
Bless...

She had a VSD. First we were told that it was small and she would NEVER need surgery. Then she was seem by a cardiologist and they said she needed a cardiac catheter to investigate things further as there were some signs that her heart was working harder than it should(she had this at 10months), the results of that showed a moderate VSD which needed to be fixed before she was 2 to prevent lung damage. She was put on the waiting list and after 7 months had open heart surgery. Her incision is across her chest purely fr cosmetic reasons - underneath the skin her breastbone was split like usual.

I was never worried until we found out she needed surgery, and then i was devestated. I did a lot of crying I spent the next 7 months worrying myself sick, and then the surgery was over and done so quickly and smoothly I wondered what on earth I had been worried about.

Good luck for Em's surgery - I bet she charms all the doctors Brilliant about the crawling too.

I can really identify with your worries that the doctors may have got it wrong. I went through that after dd's surgery thinking that every follow-up appointment we went for they were going to turn round and tell me there was something else wrong! They never did, and now at last (18months later!) I finally believe her heart is fixed

Sorry this thread was supposed to be for you, not about me I guess it still helps me to talk about what we went through. Especially with people who actually understand...
