How old were your children when they started watching CBBC instead of Cbeebies?

DS1(5.5) has become obsessed with CBBC (mainly ClutterNutters & MI High)& I don't mind (though it's a bit sad that he's growing up!) except that I'm sure a lot of it goes over his head. Also, DS2 is only 2.7yo & I'm worried it's not very suitable for him. I mean with CBeebies I can go into the kitchen & make the supper & not worry what they're watching. Is it fairly wholesome on CBBC? (I'm saying all this & yet I let them watch Spiderman!)

We have the same issue in our house - I'm sure that ds1 (6.3) would like some (though not sure all is suitable) on CBBC but am reluctant to introduce the concept as ds2 is only 4 and not ready. Only have one freeview box!

dhw · 24/01/2007 15:10

my 4.5 yr old son has decreed that cbeebies is too young for him and he loves cbbc. I actually quite like watching it too - thank god no more squeaky voices of dressed up fluffy animals! But I worry about the whole subject thing too...hmmm good wholesome stuff about kids in foster homes and being mean to each other!

utterlyconfused · 24/01/2007 15:11

I think my ds1 was about 6 when he became really bored of cbeebies. There is 3.5 yrs between him and ds2, with dd in between. It depends what's on. THey won't watch the likes of Tellytubbies, but there's the odd thing he'll tolerate, but in general even my 4yo ds2 will only watch cbbc even when he's alone. Most of it is ok - I think probably the stuff you'd rather they didn't watch doesn't really appeal anyway. It is a difficult one, though, and one I struggle with.

Fireflyfairy2 · 24/01/2007 15:14

My 5yr old watches certain programmes on cbbc but actually prefers cbeebies, which is ok with me was ds is 2 & loves cbeebies too. Except for telletubbies, higglty pigglty house & the other one where a house has a face & the clock talks..in fact he cries when he sees these. He's not really interested in TV though. He much prefers to drive a tractor round the floor going "Brrroommmmmmm"

Greensleeves · 24/01/2007 15:24

I think if you've let them watch Spiderman at that age, there's not much point worrying about the apropriateness of children's TV. It's crap, shoddily made and boring for the most part, but I doubt you'll see anything less inappropriate for a small child than some of the scenes in Spiderman.

6
There are some programmes, such as the magical Arthur, which are specifically aimed at the younger end of the CBBC target audience, but all of it is OK, esp. compared to CITV or the cable channels.
Don't care for Stupid much and Ker-Chingg! is aimed at the upper end of the CBBC audience, but it's all well-made IMO.
Can you not encourage ds1 to spend more time on Cbeebies still?
Ds is 7 and still enjoys watching Rubbadubbers and Charlie and Lola with dd

bundle · 24/01/2007 15:29

i make them take it in turns marina, but dd1 obviously makes clutter nutters, raven et al seem attractive to dd2

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:30

I am fuming but resigned to dd's huge interest in Tracy sodding Beaker.
We alternate too. Seems fairest. Dd loves Raven too...

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:30

DS started watching Cbbc at 6. I think the answer is to be selective about what your older child watches, or let him watch things and engage your younger child with something else (I have to do this when Raven is on as it scares dd 4.5).

I don't let him watch some things - including Tracey Beaker - too old for him.

JackieNo · 24/01/2007 15:30

DD is just starting to move from one to the other. She love 'Clutter Nutters' too. And Basil Brush. I have the same worries about some of the programmes' suitability for DS, who's 3. ATM it's a case of if DS is at nursery, she can have CBBC, but if he's around (apart from Clutter Nutters) it has to be CBeebies.

motherinferior · 24/01/2007 15:31

Mine have discovered CITV, much to my horror.

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:33

Basil Brush loved by us all, including grandparents who can reminisce about the Olden Days.
Dd not fazed by anything on CBBC (is hauled off for quality time with me during MI High) but has commented on stuff on CITV...so we don't watch it, period. Ds is very good about this.

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:34

Tracey Beaker is on ALL THE TIME.

basil Brush is a favourite chez puddle

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:35

I used to tut about the fart content of new Basil until ds entered the right age group. Now I can see it for what it is - perfect. Anil just cracks me up

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:36

(Ponce alert)
Nothing with adverts allowed here after they started to watch Boomerang and started quoting from the adverts "'dirt is good' mummy" in the supermarket.

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:36

Ds loves MI Hight Marina. He's marked it on the calendar so he remembers to watch.

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:38

Right there with you re ad poncing puddle
Am determinedly not interested in the retro content of Milkshake, ads are off-limits with us too.
Tracey Beaker is to CBBC what Diagnosis Murder is to afternoon TV. Reshown in random order with characters, care homes, haircuts, bosoms etc all coming and going alarmingly sometimes even on the same afternoon

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:40

Mine too. He is hugely proud that before they were even trailing this he and a friend at school had a spy cell called MI Kids. We have a riff going that someone overheard him, stole his idea and we are going to sue CBBC for £££
His cell came to a sticky end when it was infiltrated by a gurl from Yr 2.

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:41

Actually scampadoodle it was when my two were the age of yours that we invested in a few new dvds rather than have the endless CBBC/ Cbeebies discussions.

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:41

I think our ds's would get on marina (from what I hear of yours on here).

motherinferior · 24/01/2007 15:42

I am quite pro MI High just because of the name.

puddle · 24/01/2007 15:42

Argh. Apostrophe error! DSs

Marina · 24/01/2007 15:43

I think they might puddle
LOL MI
