All these effing laminate floors.... How are babies meant to learn to pull up/walk?!

DD2 is having a nightmare and therefore so am I! The house we rent has laminate floor in the front room and is the wrong shape for a rug (plus the rugs we have just slide from under her!) She is wanting to start cruising but just slips and is getting really frustrated! Any tips??

Bare feet? Can be a bit cold this time of year, though.

Kelly1978 · 18/01/2007 16:20

socks with non slip soles from primark. she shouldn't slip that much in bare feet though.

MamaG · 18/01/2007 16:20

oh yes, get the little slipper socks , GAP have cute ones

SenoraPartridge · 18/01/2007 16:21

bare feet or leather shoes.

foundintranslation · 18/01/2007 16:21

We've got parquet, it's fine. ds probably did slip a few times but it didn't hold him back. I'd definitely like floorboards, parquet or possibly laminate in our next place - much prefer it to carpet.

SenoraPartridge · 18/01/2007 16:21

(I mean those soft leather shoes - I've forgotten the name)

Hypnotubby · 18/01/2007 16:23

(plus you can get those rubbery gripper things to stop your rugs sliding on laminate)

Soapbox · 18/01/2007 16:23

Bare feet is definitely the answer IMHO - I think that is what they recommend anyway for babies' feet.

Hypnotubby · 18/01/2007 16:24

gosh, i'm so eloquent! they are like rubber rugs but textured so as to be non-slip iykwim

zephyrcat · 18/01/2007 16:32

We all fall over on this bloody floor - even in bare feet!! I'll have to give it a go and see if her feet are perhaps a little more sweaty!!

none of mine have a problem with laminate and crawling lol.

yes to bare feet and gap socks.!

NannyL · 18/01/2007 19:27

or these little baby shoes which are very soft leather with a suede sole...

my 16month old wears them in the home to stop him slipping.

they also are good in a buggy in the cold weatehr for babies who arnt big enough for proper shoes, and i would imagine, especially in this weatehr their feet would get very cold

i have used these on all "my" babies! these type of shoes

zephyrcat · 18/01/2007 19:34

Hmm.... she has some of those shoes, they're from next though and more smooth leather on the bottom than suede-ish. Will try anything though to stop her shouting at me in temper!!!

Socks with grips on - you can get them all over the place - ASDA, gap etc. Leather shoes help too - we had Robeez but I think Daisy Roots are the same.

My DS learnt to crawl/ cruise/ walk on wooden floors but in bare feet (but it was summer and very hot where we live)

mamama · 18/01/2007 19:41

If the soles of the shoes have worn smooth, you can rub them with sandpaper to help them grip better (Robeez shoes tell you to do that)

We have laminate floor downstairs and DS is cruising ok without slipping and wears socks and no shoes. However I did nearly go flying the other day in socks on a patch where I had accidentally used baby wipe rather than antibacterial wipe on floor (it has since dried). Do you clean / wipe floor with anything that makes it more slippy?

AitchTwoOh · 18/01/2007 19:57

you can get carpet tape to secure rugs, and a squish of hairspray stickies up the soles of the wee leather shoes.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2007 20:07

double sided selotape on the soles of her feet.

mummyhill · 18/01/2007 20:11

My kids have no problem on the laminate in bare feet and have now even mastered skating round in their socks they are aged 5 and 1.

brimfull · 18/01/2007 20:12

rugs

zephyrcat · 18/01/2007 20:19

bigcooklittlecook - it gets wiped with baby wipes all the time as they dribble, sneeze, spill, squash, draw..........

they soon ge tthe hang of it, we have wood flooring and lucy is fine on it, she walks round the furniture easily now and on my mums parquet she 'swims' on it and loves it, much more fun than carpet.

BigCookLittleCook · 19/01/2007 07:31

Hmmm maybe try household wipes not baby wipes on floor then as I definitely noticed a difference with the baby wiped area. I skidded along, great fun but not if you are holding a baby
