Ds is now 6 1/2 months and can't roll, sit, crawl or anything like that and I need reassurance...

... that this is still kind of normal.

I know he will have problems with gross motor development because his head is slightly large, his arms and legs are short in comparison to his trunk, so it will be more difficult for him to balance himself out IYSWIM.

But it would help to think that even babies without ds's specific problems don't all roll/crawl/sit unaided at this age! Or do they?

Well, mine didn't. He is dyspraxic though with quite low muscle tone. But he's five now and can sit and walk and run and stuff. He's not as coordinated as his peers, but I can't see it being any kind of problem for him as an adult at all. I'm sure other people will come along whose prize-winningly athletic children were slow starters.

Any possibility of a diagnosis for your ds yet Emkana?

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:23

I can't remember when ds sat up reliably - it must have been more around the 8month mark. He never crawled or rolled, I think. He walked at around 14months and was pretty much totally immobile until then - but had a good like in commands!

hana · 07/01/2007 23:24

dd2 didn't sit up unsupported until 9 months

NotAnOtter · 07/01/2007 23:25

i can only remember that my daughter did not crawl till a year - or walk till 16 months - she was on the slow side but no one was concerned. She was just lazy. Dont worry it would be early if he were sitting up

littleducks · 07/01/2007 23:26

Can he sit if propped up/surrounded by cushions? If so, im sure he is fine. My dd is a nearly 8 mths and cruising its a nightmare she is always hurting herself or getting stuck, im jealous of the babies who just play on mat at mum and baby group and some are older than your ds andjust arent mobile babies. Some babble or express themselves alot more.

All develop at own pace, im sure its completly normal and try and be grateful that it makes life easier (easier said than done im sure as its worrying).

Did you get his health issue sorted with consultants in the end?

Big sigh on that topic, aloha! (Thanks for answering btw)

I have sent ds's x-rays to America in the hope that they will help with a diagnosis, specifically that they will be able to tell me for definite whether he has Jeune's syndrome or not. Am waiting for them to get back to me, should be any day now.

The other thing is waiting to find out why he keeps having chest problems, the specialist suggested all sorts of tests, but haven't heard anything about appointments. Will get dh to chase it up tomorrow because I'm fed up with chasing, and also hate ds's consultant who has previously called me anxious and intense and has advised other doctors not to become "entangled" with me! Am waiting to be referred to a different consultant, still waiting there as well...

It's so f*cking frustrating, I tell you...

Gosh, yes 6months is early for sitting.

I think ds was more nine months come to think of it.

emkana · 07/01/2007 23:27

Lots of crossed posts there, thanks for all the answers!

my dd is within 'normal' range in all health and scaling respects but did not really roll until after 6m and started crawling at 10.5m. she was sitting by 6m but at 1y still falls over backwards if distracted. please do not worry, some babies do take longer to learn but they usually get there in the end .

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:28

Well, he just was behind everyone and didn't crawl or roll really. He took ages to walk up and down stairs, and even now is two footed on every step. Also he couldn't (and still can't) use a scooter or a bike. He was also less independent with feeding himself etc.

He was talking up a storm though!

coppertop · 07/01/2007 23:29

Dd is 9mths old and still doesn't crawl. She's probably only rolled over twice in her life. She hates being on her front so there's no real incentive there. I remember that sitting unsupported was only a fairly recent achievement when she had her 8mth development check.

dd1 was late at rolling etc she rolled at 9months i think.

dd2 is the surprsinging one, she has low muscle tone (not that low but noticably IYKWIM) but was rolling at 5months-ish, crawling by 6months, and walked at 10months.

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:30

Oh Emkana, what a nightmare! Poor you!

I want to add, when I say walking at 14months, I mean doing a bit of upright tottering while holding onto a toddle truck thing, not strolling down the street!

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:32

Dyspraxia used to be called 'clumsy child syndrome'! It is a disorder of the organisation of movement - a mental developmental disorder that is not connected with intelligence. It is often - not always - connected with the autistic spectrum.

misdee · 07/01/2007 23:34

aloha, will start a new thread, just want to ask you some stuff.

littleducks · 07/01/2007 23:35

Oh, I was hoping maybe i had missed a development in your sons case but sounds like your still stuck faffing about with that consultant and i didnt see any news as there wasnt any.

But on the bright side plenty of reassurance about the sitting/rolling issue.

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:36

Yes, don't want to hijack, Emkana. I think this, at least, is not something to worry about. Poor little boy getting all those chest infections - and poor you, worrying about him.

Medea · 07/01/2007 23:38

I don't think ds sat up reliably until about 8 months. He never crawled at all. And I remember he didn't reach the rolling over milestone when he was supposed to (but I don't remember when he did roll over for the first time).

He's 7, a rubbish athlete, but a scary whiz at maths.

I hope you get your answers in America. It's a different system over there, and they're likely to be more more attentive & thorough (though obviously at a price).

Nice to see you back Aloha! ( expatkat)

And good luck Emkana. Nothing sounds amiss at the moment. Even the chest problems might be explainable, but I'm sorry to hear you & ds are going through that.

3Ddonut · 08/01/2007 00:11

My dd is nearly 7 months and not yet sitting. I had a little wave of concern today about it actually, then settled myself (she'll do it when she's ready - also she doesn't get much chance to try being the smallest of 3!) try not to worry (easier said than done) and very naughty of your consultant to 'tar' you like that even if that's his oppinion, he should keep it to himself, is he a Dad'? does he know what's it's like to be concerned about a child? Obviously not.

holiholiday · 08/01/2007 01:07

i know a baby who didnt sit til 11 months and lots of babies never roll or crawl - theyj ust get up and walk.

LRWG · 08/01/2007 07:59

Emkana - DD is almost eight months (this Friday) and only starting sitting a week or so ago and she still needs pillows for when she's had enough and decides to go backwards As for rollin - she can roll front to back but not back to front. She hates being on her tummy so I doubt she'll ever do a complete roll.

Kittypickle · 08/01/2007 08:15

Ds sat round about 8/9 months I think, he has a big head bless him and was a very long baby but his legs are on the short side in comparison. Neither of mine rolled over until they crawled, which was round the 10/11 month mark. My DD has dyspraxia & low muscle tone and sat up a good couple of months earlier than DS. DS's motor skills are pretty much bang on and he is fairly adept physically unlike his sister.
