18 month old has stopped walking

Hi
I'm new to these type of forums but I really need some help/advice. My 18 month old has been walking for a good couple of months quite happily then 2 weeks ago she just stopped and hasn't walked since. She will pull herself up on furniture but won't stand there for long before going down on her hands and knees. When I go to stand her on the floor she tucks up her feet and knees.
She has been off her food and very clingy and crying a lot at night. At times, mainly first thing in the morning and last thing at night she doesn't want to be touched or picked up and will just lay on her back.
We've been to both the doctors and hospital and been told that she's probably just going through a phase or that its a knock on effect from a cold she had a month ago. I don't agree. There is something wrong. When I go to bath her she won't sit up and screams the house down. She is also refusing to sit in her highchair.
Am I over-reacting? What could be wrong? Who should I speak to? We've had x rays done on her pelvis and they've come back fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Has anyone suggested Perthes to you? My god daughter had this, and, while it was awful for a while she made a full recovery.

Kangaroosjump · 17/08/2015 10:06

Hope you get some answers and support from the GP today OP Thanks

CoconutSponge · 17/08/2015 10:11

Have you tried giving her regular pain relief to see if it helps?

Although having said that if it is Discitis usually something stronger than Paracetamol or Ibuprofen is needed. I still think it would be worth a try if she is screaming and not moving normally - this to me suggests pain somewhere if not in her legs or hips maybe her back?

Someone I know her two year old had Discitis from knocking her back reaching under her cot to get her dummy, it took weeks of symptoms similar to your DD to find the problem and she ended up in Hospital, the Consultant said Adults with that condition are given Morphine for the pain!!

I would also keep pushing for the x-ray or MRI and a second, third opinion etc until you get some satisfactory answers.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon x

Trazzletoes · 17/08/2015 10:17

saraha I hope you get some answers. I very much do not mean to panic you but my son stopped walking when he was 3 and it turned out he had cancer. That is very very very unlikely as only 100 children in the UK are diagnosed every year but it has very few symptoms although refusal to bear weight is one of them as is irritability.
There are any number of things that have the same symptoms though.

If you're seeing a HCP today anyway it may be worth just asking them to feel DD's tummy and see if there's anything unusual as his type of cancer grows on the kidney.

By the way, my DD had similar symptoms which I convinced myself was also cancer and turned out to be constipation.

I hope you get some straightforward answers soon x

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 17/08/2015 10:19

What a worrying time for you. I'm really at a loss as to what to suggest but I hope you find answers soon Thanks

If it's not been mentioned a paediatric neurologist should be your next port of call if other avenues are drawing blanks. And yes, it's overwhelmingly likely to be something relatively non-serious if there are few other symptoms.

Hi everyone.
Thank you so much for all your messages and advice. We went to the GP today who saw what we're seeing! Finally! She commented that she had not seen anything like this in all her 20+ years. Which although isn't good made me feel better that it's not just me being paranoid. She looked through the hospital records who hadn't even written down her symptoms properly.
She agreed with a second opinion based on what she had seen today and read in the hospital reports. She phoned a specific children's hospital near where we live but was told they wouldn't see me and my daughter and we'd have to go through their system which can take 2+ weeks to be seen. Not happy. The doctor at the hospital suggested to my GP that we should go through this children's hospitals A+E to get seen quickly. And the GP agrees and says we shouldn't wait. So we're off to another hospital tomorrow to hopefully get some answers.
Will keep you posted.
Reference some of your comments; BertandRussell I looked up Perthes, that doesn't sound nice at all. i'm so please your God daughter is ok now, bless her. We'll keep an eye on her overall development.
CoconutSponge, we have suspected Discitis for a little while as she has a lot of the symptoms. We give her regular pain relief, both paracetamol and ibuprofen (I think we've been giving it her for too long to be honest) but it doesn't seem to make much difference. No wonder if adults need morphine! We're going to push for a MRI as this is one of the only ways to check her spine (I think)
Trazzletoes, your poor son, I hope he is ok now. Thank you for sharing your story. We have considered cancer but there are times when she seems 'normal' and happy. But we have considered it. She also had issues with her kidneys when she was first born so will highlight this again to hospital just so they're aware. Thanks
Alanpacino, I hope its nothing serious too, fingers crossed we find an answer soon
Thanks everyone. I'll keep you posted

Trazzletoes · 18/08/2015 06:46

Ps. Yes thanks he's doing really well now - 18 months after finishing treatment.

confusedandemployed · 18/08/2015 07:02

Sarah thanks for your update and I'm glad your gp is on board. Funnily enough my gp said to do the same thing and just pitch up at a&e.
I'll be thinking of you today and really hope you get some answers. And don't fret about the Calpol / ibuprofen. DD was on max dose of both for the whole 2 months she was ill and no lasting effects Flowers

How's it going OP?

saraha321 · 20/08/2015 21:23

Hi everyone
thank you so much for all your help and support. We were admitted to the children's hospital following our trip to a and e. The doctors agreed something was wrong but didn't know what. so dd had more bloods done and an ultrasound of her abdomen. They also put her on the emergency list for mri. They have all been brilliant. had mri today and results are in. dd has been diagnosed with discitis. so is having antibiotics via drip for 4 days then we should be able to go home with follow up appointments. they're also going to x ray her back too tomorrow.
I'm so pleased we followed all your advice and got a second opinion. I don't know how to thank you all. dd had first antibiotic this afternoon and already seems bit better.
Thanks everyone. I'll let you know how she gets on x

my heart has been in my mouth reading this.

please tell us, how is your little girl today?

saraha321 · 22/08/2015 20:56

Hi everyone
just a quick update on dd. We're still in hospital, but hoping to be out late Monday or Tuesday morning. The antibiotics seem to be having an effect. She's not up and walking yet but is crawling about more and has played with a few toys they've got here. She's still not eating but docs think that'll change soon when it stops hurting for her to poo.
so all is looking good for her. Thanks to all the fab docs and nurses who took it seriously.
Again thanks everyone for your best wishes and support. I'll update soon x
