Sensitive - what do you call your ds' girlie bits?

This is a tough one - I've a 3 yo ds and i've confidently called his private 'bits' his willie..he's happy with this and always uses the name when needed. No probs there. With girls its harder...i've got a 6 mo ds and, although it's early days, i feel i'm already searching for an equivalent for my daughters girlie 'bits' but struggling i'm afraid!

I'm not a prude. I don't find it difficult to talk about these issues. I just want to avoid the name my mum called mine - wee wee - eeeck! Now I call mine 'my vagina' but this doesn't seem right for a little girl and it always makes me feel a bit...errr...cringey IYKWIM.

When my ds and dd share a bath or when i'm changing my dss nappy, my ds is satisfied that she just 'hasn't got a willie'. But it's started to make me think - what does one name it?!!

I apologise if this offends anyone...not intended. I would love others opinions/experiences.

Vagina's not anatomically the correct term, vulva is (Harpsi's gonna be SO proud of me ).

collision · 19/09/2006 23:36

No offense intended to anyone.

i just think some of these names are a bit confusing to children. Even willy is silly so I dont know why we use it.

I wouldnt say penis or vagina or vulva.

Front bottom seems polite and what it is. A bottom at the front which the wee comes out of.

MrsSpoon · 20/09/2006 00:13

Sorry beegee, I'm just being silly tonight.

DS2, aged 4, has just recently asked the where do babies come out question and I fluffed it by saying that Mummies have a special place near their bottoms for babies to come out. This was followed a few days later by DS2 talking very loudly about the baby sister he wants us to have, I thought he was very sweet and was encouraging him until he very loudly announced "Yes Mummy the baby sister will come out your bum!".

Hi Collision!

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 20/09/2006 00:18

My girls always had a front bottom when they were little - as curlew said, they say "my bottom's itchy" and you say "front or back?" - unlike with a boy it's all joined up, so it makes perfect sense.

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 20/09/2006 00:20

Also one of my daughters was called Franny when little and used to get dreadful stick when the word Fanny was bandied about so we all hate that word

collision · 20/09/2006 10:08

so what is it to be?

noony, fanjo, front bottom, vulva????????????

PrettyCandles · 20/09/2006 10:21

Is there a geographic aspect to this? Fanjo = virtual; noony = London; front bottom = t'North... (Making it up as I go along.)

genitals?

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/09/2006 10:28

Why do you think it necessary to make up a name? Why not call it what it is. Penis is easy for a boy I think genitals will do for a girl.
IMO

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/09/2006 10:29

I mean genitalia is what makes us male or female, and can be explained to children in that way.

Or how about Mouse!

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/09/2006 10:29
Grin
PrettyCandles · 20/09/2006 10:30

For the same reason that the family name for it/them won't do once they get to school age - they want words that their peers understand.

Also a lot of adults get utterly freaked by little children sounding too knowledgeable.

PrettyCandles · 20/09/2006 10:31

We deliberately chose to use the same word for boy's bits and girl's bits, because I don't like the idea of saying "she hasn't got one". Of course she has one, it's just a different shape to his.

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/09/2006 10:31

Yeah...but has anyone ever thought that children are born with the same amount of intelligence as adults.

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/09/2006 10:32

And why would children discuss their genitals at school?

By the time they are teenagers they will be calling it much more profound names!!!!!

Genitals is good, actually. I might go for that rather than vulva (which always makes me think of Volvo).

donnie · 20/09/2006 10:34

minnie or minkie.
