Would really like some insight as my little one just diagnosed and still quite confused by it as symptoms don't seem to entirely suggest it but hospital said as the swab results take 2 days to come back to treat it as such
Very worried mum here

Scarlet fever isn't too bad, kids can be a bit down, my dd had a swollen tongue and sore throat, she lived on ice lollies

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 00:05

Hi
Thanks for your reply
Can I ask what the rash was like?
Only on my little one ( aged 3 ) she was poorly Monday didn't eat much had a high temp but back to her normal self Tuesday.
Tuesday evening after her bath s red rash cane up on her stomach which had disappeared overnight,
Wednesday her whole underneath was red which faded again overnight and was near enough gone yesterday however today I noticed peeling where the rash was so headed to the doctor,
He was pretty useless and prescribed amoxicillin and told me to go to a&e if I was worried which I did.
They said it sounds like scarlett fever however the results aren't back for 2 days but the rash / flushed cheeks / slight redness of the throat seem to indicate it.
Really worried as the first sign of rash was Tuesday and only started antibiotics ( penicillin ) this evening and have read about lots of complications

I think my ds had this last summer. it was undiagnosed but 2 other kids at nursery were diagnosed with it. He had high temp for a few days then was fine again. Then a week or so later had the scarlet fever rash, really red hot rash. It was worse after a warm bath and when he was warm like in bed. We thought it was parvovirus at the time but it was all over his body, especially his arms. He was well in himself though. It's not a very bad virus and antibiotics won't help. Don't worry if that's what it is it's not bad, my ds didn't feel poorly and was his normal self throughout. x

My dd had this 2 years ago. The gps are usually right with there instincts. The antibiotics are a precaution to prevent any complications. My dd took them for 10 days. She was fine she just had bronchialitis for 6 months after which was not that bad. I hope she/he recovers soon

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 13:03

Thankyou for your replies.
Apparently antibiotics are needed and I'm just worried as the first sign of a rash came up Tuesday and antibiotics not started until yesterday the chances of complications are now higher.
Do they check them for a certain amount of time after to see if anything developed? As I've read it can cause heart problems

The complications are very rare anyway especially now she is on antibiotics so please try not to worry.

Dd and I both had it in the summmer.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 13:05

It isnt a virus but a bacterial infection btw si antibiotics WILL cure it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 13:06

If not treated at ALL there would be a tiny chance of complications but I'm sure she will be fine.

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 13:21

Thankyou.
Do they check anything after it's finished or take it that you'd know if anything had come of it?
I need to go back to the doctor end of next week for the next lot of Penicillin but may ask to see another doctor as not at all happy to have been given amoxillian " in Case " it was Scarlett fever only to find out that wouldn't have treated it at all anyway :(

My ds had it when he was 5.

He woke up bright red, like sunburn then spots appeared. Rushed to doctors who immediately diagnosed scarlet fever. He was given penicillin. He already had massive temp and was hallucinating.. It took 24 hours for medicine to kick in. He was hot, feverish and very I'll for 3 days. Then he started to get better. Off school for well over 1 week.

He was very ill with it but I think like all these things it varies greatly from child to child. His friend breezed through it.

It's a bit like a massive viral infection. He got ill again 1 month later. Nothing serious, but went bright Red, hot but fine with calpol.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 16:49

No they won't do follow up check.

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 18:08

Thanks day today,
The doctor at the hospital said you should never catch it more than once, obviously not the case.
They also said be would be followed up when the Penicillin is complete, maybe this is incorrect again.
I've noticed another little rash on the neck which was red and is now dotty, is this to be expected?
Concerned that this can apparently turn to meningitis

Ds2 had it when he was 2, it went round the nursery. He was quite poorly - high temp and spots and the swollen tongue. Lasted about a week, but no serious complications. He had a blood test and penicillin - at the time it was a notifiable condition.
Ds1 had the milder form at the same time (scarletina) and dh and I just had the throat infection.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 18:18

Well if they said they will follow up they will.

They didn't follow DD up.

If you are worried abiut the dotty rash do glass yest and if it doesn't fade get it checked out.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 18:18

Glass test. Sorry about the typos.

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 20:40

It does fade.
Just worried as im so shocked I think! I'd never even heard of this and I always assumed the rash started somewhere and spread not came up went and came up somewhere else altogether.
I imagined a very sickly child.
She's now got a horrible cough that was mild in the early part of the week hence me thinking it was a cold but now I don't know if it's just a cough from that or if this thing is turning to pneumonia :( as apparently it can.
No fever at all since Monday but this evening is 37.5 but aside from the cough fine in herself.

lulalullabye · 01/02/2014 22:07

My DD had it in 2011. Rash and sore throat. Skin peeled off after and she had white around her mouth and redness everywhere else. typical rash for scarlett fever. No problems after. Always remember to tell medical professionals that she has had it as it can cause some problems with heart valve issues if combined with other health issues. Ask doc for details at next appt. Especially important with surgery apparantly. The doc will tell you.

bloob · 01/02/2014 22:56

Dd had it last year, she was 3.

She was poorly with it and had anti biotics but it wasn't major.

Just a high temp and sore throat. She felt quite poorly I think but it was fine :) no complications or anything and she was back in pre school a few days later.

Really don't panic. It did the rounds here last year, no one had any problems. It's a pretty mild illness these days even though it sounds scary. If you look up any illness there can be horrific sounding complications!

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 23:29

Bloob
Thankyou so much for your reply.
I guess it's the unknown that's so scary!
I have never heard of it in my entire life and just din think it could be, even when the rash was present and I was googling away it didn't look like the pictures, it was bright pink/red but only on the underneath area so looked like an allergic reaction to underwear if anything.
So strange and wish I had just gone earlier but I'm glad she's on the antibiotics she needs and is okay in herself
Just waiting to see if my younger daughter comes down with it now :(

Yes my now 10 year old had it age 5, we didn't realise what it was for over a week, until she had passed it to the rest of us, including a 9 week old.

No complications, antibiotics worked brilliantly for the rest of us

Slightlyneuroricnat · 01/02/2014 23:53

Im shocked so many people have experience with this, I thought it was an illness of the past.

Mandysname · 02/02/2014 08:06

My DS had it last year, fever for about 4 days, rash (which looked nothing like pictures either) sore tongue/throat and dry skin on legs. Was managable and lots ice pops and ibuprofen did the trick. He also got a non blanching rash which took 4 doctors to decide was scarlett fever and not meningitis. Complications are rare, and the doc told us that modern day scarlett fever is much more mild version of the disease in the past. Anti-biotics worked well. Hope your little one feels better soon xx hugs xx
