Toothbrushing trauma - keep going or give up??

My dd is 20 mo, and is generally quite a chilled out little girl, in as far as a toddler can be anyway. But for some reason she just has a major issue with toothbrushing. She's never liked it but will go through phases of being a bit more accepting of it. Right now we're in the clamping mouth shut, going bright red and getting really upset phase - the only time I can get the brush in her mouth is when she's screaming and crying her eyes out. I feel like an awful mum but I just don't know what's worse - getting her in that state every day or not brushing her teeth! In reality, even when we get to that point, it's not a great brushing effort as she's thrashing her head around!!
I think we're all a bit traumatised by it. I've read one opinion that says don't turn it into a battle, but what's the alternative? Rotten teeth?!
We've tried lots of different things, brushing them in the bath, on our laps, giving her a second brush to play with, distracting her...all ends the same way. I'd just love to know your opinions on what to do. Thanks!

Well you all inspired me. Some brilliant tips! I bought bubblegum toothpaste, downloaded the Aquafresh app (damn that song is catchy!!), got her a new Winnie the Pooh brush. And I think she screamed louder tonight than ever before!! Hmm
Still, I persevered through the screaming, thinking about the alternative dental works if I didn't! Am I right in thinking that the main thing is to get the toothpaste on the teeth? It's still tricky to get much decent brushing done, she's a strong little lady and thrashes around no matter what hold we get her in.

My DD is 2.2 and i let her do it every time and just help her from time to time. Its not brilliant, but if i try to force her it will become a issue. She likes this song and copies along.

These Collis Curve toothbrushes are very good if you struggle to get much brushing done, whilst you are in there! They brush all the surfaces at once. I just wish they weren't so expensive, we get through tons of them with ds!

I used to chew DS's toes. He found it hilarious, and I would sneak a brush in while he hooted with laughter.

Thanks hazeyjane, looks good, might help me get something useful done while I'm in there!
