When did your DC start calling you 'Mum' instead of 'Mummy'?

DS is only just 4 and recently started reception. He went through the phase of discovering his parents have first names about 4-5 months ago, and was trying that out, but soon when back to 'mummy' and 'daddy'.

In the last week, he's starting calling us 'Mum' and 'Dad', and I don't like it! He's only 4, surely 'mummy' doesn't get permanently dropped this young?

I'm not ready to be 'Mum'!

We were Mum and Dad from the start. I hate Mummy and Daddy.

NickNacks · 17/11/2013 11:08

Ds1 was 8
Ds2 was 5 - about 6 weeks after ds1 started doing it
As a result dd is 2 and calls me both plus, mama.

ThePigOfHappiness · 17/11/2013 11:09

Dd1 was about 4.5/5. Dd2 (3) calls me mama still

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 17/11/2013 11:10

I have always been mum but his dad is daddy.

since nursery though he has started saying mummy and I dont like it

NickNacks · 17/11/2013 11:10

Sorry dd is 3 not 2.

LalyRawr · 17/11/2013 11:11

I'm Mum, dad is Daddy. Has been since she could talk.

Well more accurately I'm 'mum mum mum mum MUM!' And dad is Daddy.

HSMMaCM · 17/11/2013 11:12

DD is 15 and calls us mummy and daddy when not in earshot of her friends. Around them we are mum and dad or mother and father. My own mum called her mother mummy her whole life.

shallweshop · 17/11/2013 11:14

My DC are 9 and 7 and alternate between calling us mummy and daddy and mum and dad. I would say my elder DD probably calls me mummy more than younger DS.

overmydeadbody · 17/11/2013 11:14

I was always mum, I like it. I am not a mummy.

YankNCock · 17/11/2013 11:35

Let me clarify, I don't like being called 'Mum' because to me it signifies that my little guy is growing up! If he had always said 'mum', that would have been fine--it's the change that I find disturbing.

dd is 9 and still calls me mummy. ds2 is 4 and it's mummy from him too. I assume once dd makes the change ds2 will follow, but she says she's going to call me mummy forever. Think she's a bit anxious about growing up at the moment!

I have to admit I'll be sad when they call me mum. End of an era!

HoobleDooble · 17/11/2013 12:39

My DS is nearly 5 and has just started with 'mum and dad' rather than 'mummy and daddy', I agree with you OP. It looks like he's going to be my only baby, so I don't want him to grow up so fast!

FredFredGeorge · 17/11/2013 14:51

I tried to get DD to call me "Dad" or "Fred" instead of daddy (as I don't like it), and she listened patiently and decided "Freddy" would be a good name. Fortunately she forgot that quickly. She's 2.5 and it's sad to hear that it may be awhile before she loses the -dy

ZuleikaD · 17/11/2013 17:26

I won't let them call me mum. It's my job, I get to decide the title. It's mummy or I don't answer.

"Mum" makes me feel old! Dd calls me mummy - I won't answer to mum

sparkleshine · 17/11/2013 18:58

DS nearly 4 calls me mummy. He knows mine and his dad's name. Sometimes he will call me mum if were at my parents and copies me when I'm talking to my mum. Occasionally he'll call me by my actual name which I don't like and tell him I'm mummy. I like it and not looking forward to when I'm mum permanently.

Procrastinating · 17/11/2013 19:04

Mine tell me they call me 'mum' when talking to their friends (god knows what they say about me), but I will only answer to mummy at home. They are 7 and 8.
My 4 year old is still on 'mama'.

Groovee · 17/11/2013 19:15

With dd I was mummy til she was about 8. But D's never called us mummy and daddy. It was alway mum and dad.

pinkandsparklytoo · 17/11/2013 19:25

My 6.5yo still calls us Mummy and Daddy, but my nearly 3yo has started saying Mum and Dad. I find it quite strange.

saragossa2010 · 17/11/2013 19:46

Never.

ToysRLuv · 17/11/2013 23:03

DS (4) sometimes calls us "mum" and "dad" now. I don't particularly care. Better than calling us by our names. Anyways, I know I am unusual, as I often actively WANT him to grow up

teacherwith2kids · 17/11/2013 23:08

DD and DS (10 and 12) call me 'mummy' to my face and 'my mum' when referring to me in conversation e.g. with friends. Have no wish to change this situation.

I am not a 'mum' person. I call my own parents mother and father, after a long discussion in early teenage. They called their parents mama and papa. We really aren't quite enough of the last century, let alone of this one, to be ready for 'mum' and 'dad'.

Tommy · 17/11/2013 23:10

similar to teacherwith2kids - my DSs are 11 and 10 and they call me Mummy but refer to me as Mum. That's fine with me Smile

breatheslowly · 17/11/2013 23:19

DD calls me mummy, mum, muma or breathe. She is 3 and seems to like trying them all out.
