When did your DC start calling you 'Mum' instead of 'Mummy'?

DS is only just 4 and recently started reception. He went through the phase of discovering his parents have first names about 4-5 months ago, and was trying that out, but soon when back to 'mummy' and 'daddy'.

In the last week, he's starting calling us 'Mum' and 'Dad', and I don't like it! He's only 4, surely 'mummy' doesn't get permanently dropped this young?

I'm not ready to be 'Mum'!

Like teacher I call my own mother Mother and if the children want to change from mummy then they can use that.

chickydoo · 18/11/2013 06:46

I am Mummy Dad is Daddy
My kids are 18, 16, 14 and 9
My DD likes it, my eldest boy says Mama if his friends are around, TBH I don't really mind, Mummy is what I'm used to.

DeathMetalMum · 18/11/2013 07:21

Dd1 is nearly 3 and I have noticed her switching to the shorter versions Mum and Dad occasionally. Dd also calls me Mama when she is in a very wingy mood which drives me crazy.

AuntieStella · 18/11/2013 07:24

I'm still mummy to all. But the change to "Dad" has happened - can't remember exactly when, I think about the time the eldest went to secondary.

bigTillyMint · 18/11/2013 07:25

DD(14) does a mixture of mum/mummy - has done for at least 5 years (was always mummy before then)
DS(12) usually calls me mum and has probably done so for about 4/5 years.

About 5, I encouraged it by referring to DH as Dad not Daddy, didn't want them sounding babyish as they grew up. I call my parents Mum and Dad too. DD (7) still calls me Mamma sometimes.

DeWe · 18/11/2013 10:46

Dd1 insists on mummy (she's 13)
Dd2 and ds (9 and 6) vary as to mum or mummy.

Bumpsadaisie · 18/11/2013 11:09

DD (4) does a mix of mum and mummy. She started introducing mum at about 3.5.

DS (just turned 2) does the same, as he copies his sister!

rrreow · 18/11/2013 15:27

I'm mama (Dutch) but DS1 (2.5yo) calls me 'ma'. I hate it!!

It's funny though because if I refer to myself as 'mammie' (Dutch word, same pronunciation as 'mummy') he will 'correct' me and tell me I'm mama.

Mum2Fergus · 18/11/2013 17:27

Last week Hmm he's just turned 4

MERLYPUSS · 18/11/2013 20:10

I am mummy, mum, mumma or luffly mummykins to dts (6).
I am 48 and my dad is still daddy or daddo.

OdaBear · 18/11/2013 21:55

My toddler calls me 'mama' or 'mummy'. He's going to be two on Friday. He calls my mum 'mum', as he's so used to hearing me say 'hi mum' on the phone or in real-life. Maybe I should cut down on contact with my mother?!!

Hulababy · 18/11/2013 21:57

DD is 11y - we are still mummy and daddy to our face, but she refers to us as mum and dad if talking to friends or if friends are about, unless close friends. Most of her Y7 friends are the same from what I have seen.

gamerchick · 18/11/2013 22:00

I've always had mam. Any mummy carrying on was a prompt we weren't in fucking peppa pig and nipped in the bud promptly.

tshirtsuntan · 18/11/2013 22:05

I am either Gwen Ten, Ash, Korn, Gromit or any other non-speaking/supporting role

Youngest is 11 and slips between the 2.

I don't remember calling my mum "mummy" as an older child but then my relationship with her was different to mine with DD.

StandingInLine · 18/11/2013 22:17

My stepson called his mum "mummy" until 14 / 15 ,and my stepdaughter still does at 16 !!

saragossa2010 · 19/11/2013 16:31

I did it until she died. It's just a class thing isn't it?

PorridgeBrain · 20/11/2013 05:25

From about 2 although still occasionally get mummy or mama. I have friends who correct their dc if they have called them mum. I never have as always remember growing up that I had to call my parents mummy and daddy and felt embarrassed in front of my friends

Babylonmoo · 20/11/2013 08:02

Saragossa- you are probably right but which classes do what?

What about grandparents? Grandma or granny or nanny or nan? Any alternatives to grandpa and grandad?

I never want to be mum because of the associations I have with it to my own mum.

So far I am nothing!

ExcuseTypos · 20/11/2013 08:17

Mine are 22 and 19 and I was Mummy unti dd1 was about 10, then I was Mum.
However when she was about 15 she started calling me Mummy again. Dd2 stuck with Mum.

Roll on a few years and I mainly mum or mumma from both of them.

GooseyLoosey · 20/11/2013 08:28

To my ds (10) I am generally, but not always, mum. If he is tired and in need of a hug, I am still mummy. Same with dh.

To dd (9) both of us are still most definitely "mummy" and "daddy". She did try out "mumma" for a while but I hated that so much I had to ask her to stop.

cornflakegirl · 20/11/2013 09:25

DS1 tried out my name for a few months when he was 4, but went back to mummy. He also tested out mum for a bit. It's not necessarily permanent.

NotYoMomma · 21/11/2013 09:44

18 months

unprompted :/
