Left handed question

hasbean · 30/05/2006 09:05

My dd2 is nearly 3 and favours her left hand for drawing, eating and everything.
I am sure she is left handed. I am not going to try and make her use her right as I know this causes problems.
My questyion is to all the lefties do you find any problems with being left handed or do you have to by left handed tools ect (can openner, scissors ect)
I stress I am not going to try and change her favoured hand as I do not want to get into a debate about it as I have already seen many of those on here. I am just woundering if I need to help her as she gets older in any way

am also a lefty and the only things I have trouble with is peeling veggies ( I peel away from me) and opening cans ( but that could be our canopener!) I use reg scissors, can knit, etc etc
I would like our fridge door to open the other way though
and I always turn change mats around the other way when I change my dd, its just little things like that

something that they might find useful is a lefthanded ruler - they are great

mammaduck · 31/05/2006 14:35

CaptainDippy, Zippy's sister and Alison: i bow to your superior crocheting skills. Is it a very useful thing to be able to do? Am I missing out?

I too am clumsier that your average RHnded Joe, but am also v artistic (drama being my preferred medium of expression).

Am also soo pleased that even more LHnders can't cut bread. I also never thought it might be a LHnded thing!

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 08:43

I'm interested in your turning the change mat round hana - why do you need to do that??

Lefties United!! Grin

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 08:44

Blush mamaduck - my crocheting really isn't that good and hasn't really come in very useful - made a funky scarf once for a friend, which was nice; but haven't done anything useful like crochet a nappy or anything!! Smile

mammaduck · 01/06/2006 09:21

lol captain dippy! :)

claireh11 · 01/06/2006 09:25

My 3 year old ds is a leftie and I'm very proud of that. He has always favoured his left hand from a tiny baby and has no trouble whatsoever in using scissors etc. He still manages to be just as messy and creative as a right hander lol

Saying that though he does favour his right hand for certain things.

sanchpanch · 01/06/2006 09:39

my 8 year old is left handed, she struggles to use right handed sissors, but elc do left handed ones, and her class has a mixture of both, and she struggles to peel veg with my peeler, so maybe i need to look at getting her a different one, but other than that she has been fine

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 10:05

Just remembered - I do have a left-hander friendly kettle, which is handy!! (It is on a base, which swivels so I can pick up with my left hand easily and there's no annoying flex in the way!!) Smile

pucca · 01/06/2006 10:08

This thread has made me think lol, about how weird it is that none of the things mentioned bothers me at all, the only things i use my left hand for is obviously writing, when cutting with scissors, and i hold the phone with my left hand too.

All other things, such as kettles, PC, cutlery etc i just adapted and use my right hand for.

Very strange lol.

peanutsmum1 · 01/06/2006 10:18

I'm a leftie and only things I have probs with are peeling veggies, opening cans - I've got a magican opener that I'm ok with. I can't cut bread either but it never occured to me it's because I'm a leftie. The only thing I've never been able to do is use a fountain pen - but I can honestly say it hasn't really been a big stumbling block :) Like a lot of other lefties I use my right hand when I'm using scissors etc.
I think it's weird in this day and age that people still consider that it might be a `problem' tbh, it's only a problem if you make it one.
A big yay for lefties :)
PS I was always the secret weapon in rounders too !!!

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 11:44

Ah Ha!! Another Rounders' Secret Weapon - All Hail the Lefties!! Grin

This is a great thread - makes me smile every time I have a sneeky peek at it!! Smile Hope you are feeling better about your DD2's leftieness now hasbean!! Smile

southeastastra · 01/06/2006 11:46

my son is struggling at the moment with sewing machines and carpentry equipment at school though, but is great at football (left kick)!

MrsBigD · 01/06/2006 12:39

My dad is lh and never had any issues, and he's an artist (opera/musical and arts&crafts) so it must be true that lefties are more artially inclined Wink

I was 'forcefully retrained' when I started school in Austria yonks ago...
Result? I easily confuse left/right and my handwriting is artrocious Grin. And I'm crap at cutting bread with either hand
Benefit? I'm still quite arty and fully amibidextrous (sp?) now.

DH is a leftie and no issues though he writes with his right hand.

originally dd favoured her left but since starting nursery she's using her right hand for drawing etc. wondering whether it's because she's copying the other kids.

ds (20m) hasn't displayed any favouritism re his hands yet... both equally used for shoving food into his mouth Grin

Amiable · 01/06/2006 13:49

I'm cack-handed too (lovely Northern expression I grew up with!) and generally don't even think about it. however, agree with a couple of points already made. Sitting next to a rightie when we are both trying to write/eat soup etc - very difficult! Scissors - ones with shaped handles are a nightmare, ie dressmaking scissors - my mum bought me a pair of leftie ones so I could help her (she is a dressmaker) also using a "normal" sewing machine is really difficult. Writing with a fountain pen can be a nightmare - I always smudge the ink as i drag my hand over what I have just written (never got the hang of curling my hand over the top.) not a problem with biro or pencil!

I have a leftie chequebook - had one for years and don't think about it most of the time. Only when I'm paying in using the slips at the back of the book, and the bankteller gets in a pickle with the book the wrong way round! it's definitely much easier for me to use though.

Ahem, sorry to dispel this myth of bread cutting, but you are all just useless!! :o :o I am the only person I know who can do perfectly straight slices, so it can't be a leftie thing!

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 14:39

Envy @ bread-cutting!! No, no, no you're just weird, Amiable!! Wink

Amiable · 01/06/2006 16:37

Hey, it is probably my only talent :(

Don't knock it!! :o

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 16:47

That's cool - You can come over to mine and cut my bread anytime - DH would really asppreciate it after the number of times I've completely massacred it!! Grin

MrsBigD · 01/06/2006 17:54

lets found a left handed bread massacre club Grin it's scary what I've sometimes done to a innocent loaf of bread

LadyTambaOfTambaTown · 01/06/2006 17:55

Im left handed :)

I used to write upside down but now I just have the paper sort of sidewards.

Sissors, are sometimes awkward, especcially those with different sized holes.

I buy tins with a ring pull Blush

southeastastra · 01/06/2006 18:03

this will sound bad but my left handed son cant do shoe laces up and were going mad trying to show him how. Any tips!

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 19:23

I am totally up for it MrsBigD - But do you think we'd end up getting lock up or something. Poor innocent loafs Wink

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 19:24

Loaves!! Geeez, where'd my English degree go!!? () Grin

hana · 01/06/2006 19:29

captain dippy - the change mat thing - it's just more natural that way - to have dd with her head to the right and legs on left in front of me. maybe like when I wash dishes ? I prefer using the right sink for washing and the
maybe that's me and not me being a leftie tho!

hana · 01/06/2006 19:29

ooops
left one for drying

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 20:05

I get you now - I do that too when I use a public changing station; but at home, I just have my DD's straight in front of my with their toes touching my knees, ifyswim??
