Left handed question

My dd2 is nearly 3 and favours her left hand for drawing, eating and everything.
I am sure she is left handed. I am not going to try and make her use her right as I know this causes problems.
My questyion is to all the lefties do you find any problems with being left handed or do you have to by left handed tools ect (can openner, scissors ect)
I stress I am not going to try and change her favoured hand as I do not want to get into a debate about it as I have already seen many of those on here. I am just woundering if I need to help her as she gets older in any way

My DH is left handed & so are 2 of our 6 children.

We have never made an issue of this or provided special scissors etc. The 3 left handers cope very well.

The only problem I have noticed is with hand writing. DH is almost unreadable. Both left handed children struggled with handwrting at school to begin with , but by the time they started secondary school there was no problem. Both had to work hard at this and were amongst the last in the class to be allowed to write in pen.

Both of our left handers are very sporty & very good at tennis and cricket. I think being left handed gives them an advantage.

Mamaduck!! I haven't done it for a looooong time, but I used to be able to crochet a bit - Any one who can do it for real though???

Mmmmmm, just realised I use my mouse right-handedly - Am I a traitor to the cause??

I'm a southpaw too
I find scissors uncomfortable but usable.
computer mouse sits on the left but with buttons the same as those weird right handers (I do IT support and life is too hard the other way)
can openers are better designed now than when I was a child. I found golf a struggle when I tried that RH but it's hardly an essential life skill. Writing is fine but I am dyslexic so prefer a keyboard anyway.
oh! much to the eternal shame of my parents I hold my fork and spoon in my left hand so cannot eat puddings properly [eye rolling emoticon]

To think I used to get my knucles rapped with a ruler for writing LH..... a mistake any teacher made only once.........bullies dont like it when you fight back Wink

No problems here although strictly I am not left handed as the only things I do with my left are write and play the guitar (well, I hold it like Paul McCartney!).

The only time I had a problem was during a short Christmas stint at the Royal Mail when I had to sort letters into little boxes and I did it the 'wrong' way! Who knew these things mattered?

Haven't read the whole thread, but i am a leftie and i do find i have problems with scissors but nothing else tbh, in fact being left handed i find i am quite good at using my right too, like the mouse on PC i use my right hand.

CarlK - I can't eat puddings properly either. I struggle on regardless though.

Spaghetti is another 'issue'.

I once had spaghetti with a friend's snooty relatives as a teenager. I just died as I cut it with my knife and fork. I know they noticed.

Also forgot to add, that i also write with my hand curved over iykwim, and i can remember vividly in primary school we had handwriting lessons with the head teacher and he always used to make a bee line for me, and i can remember him making lots of comments on the way i held my hand to write..i.e "you can't write like that as when you are older and have exams etc you will have a very aching hand"

I still write the same way, and haven't ever suffered with aching in my hand, and i do have neat handwriting too.

I like being a little different, and as i said before have had no probs at all.

Lefties are supposed to be more artistic aren't they!!? Does that follow for us guys, I wonder?? I definitely have an artistic streak - my maths / logic is shocking!! Smile

The artistic thing was correct for me, got A's in art in G.C.S.E's!

CaptainDippy · 31/05/2006 10:51

Well Done!! Smile Did you go on to do anything artistic as a profession etc??

I always find people giggle at the way I write!!

Ooooooh - another thing - notebooks that are bound with that spirially stuff - either at the top or at the side - Grrrrrrr!! Can't write in those for love nor money - Either have to start writing half-way down the page or I turn them upside down!!

pucca · 31/05/2006 12:11

CD no did nothing with it at all lol, wish i had have done now though.

I also find that people take the mick (in a nice way) about the way i hold my pen, suppose it does look funny Grin

Have no problems kniting or crotcheting. Both taught to me by right-handers

Have been a proud leftie, southpaw, mollydooker for 40yrs and I've only just realised that not being able to slice bread has nothing to do with just being generally rubbish at it. It's a LEFTIE thing Shock.....I feel so much better for knowing that this is something shared by many lefties.

HB, the only thing my mother can't cope with me being left handed is in fact slicing bread, it's not so much the rubbish way that I slice it but that it looks to her as though I'm going to slice off my fingers. She literally has to leave the kitchen.

Otherwise, only really difficult day to day things to use are scissors and some vegie peelers (just need to try a few to find the right one). Probably don't need special tools or anything and like the rest of us your DD will learn to adapt a little to fit into the right handed world.
