The Baby Whisperer ... any good?

My DS was a GF baby ... and he did very well on it ...
This time however I want to be a more flexible with my baby (but feel that routine is important) ... and realise that the rigidity of Gina Ford just won't be able to fit in with my DS's life now (he is 4 and goes to kindergarten and has various activities which mean that there is no way I can put the baby to sleep in a dark room at 12 noon EVERY day etc etc)
So, a friend has lent me The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg. I find it a good read and like the sound of the flexibility and the idea of 'learning your baby's language from day 1' etc but I just wanted to know if any mumsnetters have read it and swear by it or if there is anyone who says 'don't bother' ....
Ta very muchly ...

I found reading them both was useful, GF not maternal enough adn no room for instinct over ride, BW a bit gung ho heavy.
Best tip.. let baby settle on its own early in life...
didn'd know to do it with no 1... difference is amazing!!

I've read both Gina Ford & the Baby Whisperer. I agree Gina Ford too rigid. I found Baby Whisperer excellent as a source of reference. There is also programme on Discovery Health (Channel 186 on SKY) each day at 12.00 where Tracey Hogg (author)deals with sleep & feeding problems etc

pupuce · 24/01/2004 20:03

I think Beccarollo swears by it....
I dislike her approach on Discovery - but that's just MY opinion.... I think it is the programme I dislike maybe not so much her....

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 20:14

Beccarollo has an angelic baby.
If you like routine but not too strict then Tracey Hogg is probably what you are looking for. But imo its too stressful for mother and baby and second babies just have to fit in whether they like it or not.
I prefer a much more laid back approach and so I found her book really grated with most of my principals.
i have her book if you want it, let me know.

popsycal · 24/01/2004 20:16

I met beccarollo's baby today!!!
and I can testify that he is angelic!!

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 20:25

He slept for 12 hours a night from about 5 weeks. You should only rate this book if you have a little horror.
I didn't know you lived near Becca, popsycal. Is he as cute and happy as his pics suggest
Sorry can't use question marks, bf at mo.

popsycal · 24/01/2004 20:31

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 21:36

Well I never give it much thought. But I tend to build images up of people and in my head you live in London. I can't change it now I'll just get confused so London it is

I'm not being shifty its just interesting to see if anybody gets it right?
I was a bit surprised yesterday when I was described as "so obviously English by the sound of her posts" on an American site.

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 21:52

I might have added the glasses part when I realised you are a teacher. Is that right or did I imagine that?
Woo, different realities are merging.
