The Baby Whisperer ... any good?

My DS was a GF baby ... and he did very well on it ...
This time however I want to be a more flexible with my baby (but feel that routine is important) ... and realise that the rigidity of Gina Ford just won't be able to fit in with my DS's life now (he is 4 and goes to kindergarten and has various activities which mean that there is no way I can put the baby to sleep in a dark room at 12 noon EVERY day etc etc)
So, a friend has lent me The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg. I find it a good read and like the sound of the flexibility and the idea of 'learning your baby's language from day 1' etc but I just wanted to know if any mumsnetters have read it and swear by it or if there is anyone who says 'don't bother' ....
Ta very muchly ...

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 22:06

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 22:12

I'm pants at this. Nevermind. Whats that mad woman in that sitcom called? "hELLO campers" I think she was in that, the cleaner or something with big glasses thats the image I've got for you actually kiwisbird. No way of changing it now

The thread on schools - Popsy, Zebra and I were discussing schools in Loughborough, I thought thats what you meant.

popsycal · 24/01/2004 22:13

bekki- not the other thread -she has emailed me and i have helped her with some reserach

popsycal · 24/01/2004 22:14

sorry!

kiwisbird · 24/01/2004 22:18

Gladys Pugh?
No think more Dido

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 22:19

Her research, hmm. I think mn is one big sociology experiment for her. And why not, if you have to work then you might as well intigrate (sp?) mn into it. I'm supposed to be making a footmuff but I'm trying to think of what this has to do with cutting fabric. Nope I've tried my best, I can't think of a connection.
Aren't teachers supposed to be pushed for time and forever marking papers?

BekkiKay · 24/01/2004 22:20

Ghosty- Sorry for hijacking this thread.
I still have the book if you want it free of charge, contact me through contact another talker.
Sorry.

Don't worry about hijacking the thread ... Thanks for the replies girls... and Bekki thanks for the offer of the book ...
I have bought my own copy however as a) it would take too long to get to NZ and b) I like to have these things NOW!!!!!
Like I say, I am finding it a good read so far ... just hope the baby is reading it too

ghosty please will you look at the sleep thread about previous good sleepers thanks

Beccarollover · 27/01/2004 16:09

Lol just come across this thread - Bekki tis right I have been blessed with a very easy baby so he has been easy to inflict a routine on apart from a few blips (growth spurt, reflux etc)

Im now following more of a GF approach but for feed times only as Im using her weaning book and he has slipped straight from EASY to GF with no problem at all so I suppose Im not the best testament for it.

It is great as a flexible routine for second baby even if you only follow some of her ideas (like I did) I always followed the EASY pattern and learnt alot about understanding cries - for example I know exactly what Harveys hungry cry sounded like so I KNEW if he needed a feed rather than forcing boob in just in case IYSWIM

The babywhisperer site is a great resource if your following the routine - very busy and helpful message boards - one specifically for parents with second babies I think!!

Oh and Popsycal - thank you for the lovely compliments about Harvey - your DS was an angel too - both good boys!!!!!

Bekki - just to annoy you Harvey is now doing 13 hours hehehe sorry m

I thought the book was good, but it only really had two things you need to know. One: as soon as your baby yawns (from when they're tiny) put them to bed. Two: don't feed them to sleep, ie. put them in their cot awake and let them go to sleep on their own. There, I've saved you a tenner!
