Ds 2 was 3 in December, and I thought he was all ok...as far as I can tell. We are aware he has some problems with his speech, clarity and pronunciation, and had his ears tested and he needs grommits, these are going in this month. I thought this was all that was wrong with him. But his nursery teacher said he seems young for his age compared to other children, I did try and ask her to be more specific and did she think he had any other problems apart from his speech. I personally think apart from the clarity of his speech, he is ok...but couldn't seem to get a straight answer from her and now I am worried.

I have a ds2 exactly the same age as yours, who does have developmental delays so he is like younger than his age. From the things youve mentioned like can get dressed etc, your ds doesn't sound behind on those but I would keep trying to make the teacher explain much more specificlally and also ask what is she suggesting that he needs.
I would push for slt too because the slt will be able to give you advice or reassurance on this too if they are a good one

Thanks everyone for all the support and advice it's nice to know when you're doubting yourself there are mumsnetters out there.
I am going to chat a bit more with his teacher and try to get her to be more specific, and then go from there because I think he's ok apart from the speech thing.

Hi shiny, sorry such a late reply.
I think it sounds like you are doing the right thing.
I'm sure if you feel better talking to a paediatrician rather than a hv that they would be able to out your mind at rest but really I think like everyone else has said once he has the grommets he will come on in leaps and bounds.

Interesting that a number of people mentioned drooling. My just-3 y.o. was a big dribbler; it turned out he had a tongue and lip tie. We had them cut and the dribble stopped. :) Some children with unclear diction see improvements when their tongue tie is cut (though unfortunately DS wan't one of them).

Thanks for all the support, I have spoken to his teacher again and we have been talking at cross purposes all along, she meant his speech problem meant his language was younger, not that there is anything else wrong with him. Which is embarassing, but good news, now just have to work on his speech.
