It's my nephew. He's 5 this year and going through a very naughty phase. My sil is at her wits end and very upset. He will not do as he is told, throws things, hits, kicks and spits. Everyday is a battle. He is however good at school. I have no experience of this but SIL is tearing her hair out so I thoght I'd ask wise mumsnetters.

TIA

I would say he doesnt repect her authority - DOes he loks like she means what she says?

Northerner · 14/01/2004 14:53

Yes she does, and her husband. He is very authorative (sp?), just he works long hours.

Is she consistent?

does she reiterate the rules? explain herself? have a good punishment (room or whatever?)

Northerner · 14/01/2004 14:56

Yes, Yes & Yes

hmm next q. does he get enough sleep?

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 14:57

Would he respond to a rewards/star chart type of thing?

Northerner · 14/01/2004 14:57

He is particularly bad when being looked after by grandparents or home help.

Coddy - yes he sleeps well.

Hulababy - never thought of star chart, sure she hasn't either. I'll sugest that.

does he not get enough attention? Otr too much? Is he listened too too much? I know a kids likes thta always argues the toss.

codswallop · 14/01/2004 14:59

what time does he g o to bed I mean

Northerner · 14/01/2004 15:00

It might be not enough attention actually. He is at full time school and has been since 3 yrs old. Then his little brother came along.

Bed about 8 I think.

aha! How long ago? is he at childcare after svhool too?

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 15:00

I have read other MNs mentioning them (my DD not yet old enough), and certianly in schools the postive discipline is very big - praise good behaviur, ignore bad behaviour.

Could have a chart with key targets at the top and he day down the side: like not spit, not kick, etc.. If he manages a certain period of time being good (a day may be too long for him at 5 and at the start) he gets a sticker/star for the chart. When he has a set number of stars he gets a treat - whatever would motivate him best.

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:01

8 is quite late IMO - does he get up early?

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:01

I tell you he sounds exhausted to me

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 15:02

Just read the attention think - maybe his treat could a trip out somewhere with just his mum or his dad, no baby in the way to distract the parent.

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:02

Or just some time cuddling at home - is he a summer birthday? My son was knackered after school

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:03

bed at 6 30 and 7pm and up at 630 - leave for school at 8 30

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:03

double aha!

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 15:04

I would say he probably needs a bit more sleep too. Aren't children of that age supposed to need between 10 and 12 hours on average?

codswallop · 14/01/2004 15:05

when do his parents seehim?
