When did your EBF baby sleep through the night?

Just wondered when EBF babies tend to go through the night, I'm getting a lot of people telling me it will take a lot longer than FF babies? DS is only 6 weeks old so not expecting him to do it yet but just wondered? Also when do they tend to start to get in to some kind of routine?

Lurking, I want to know the answers too Smile

14 weeks, then 4 month sleep regression hit. Back to sleeping through at 6 months and has done so ever since, barring illness.

DD didn't get into a routine until around 3mo. I wouldn't stress about that; it will happem by itself.

vigglewiggle · 01/08/2012 19:25

First at 9 weeks, second more like 9 months! I think there has been recent research to suggest that introducing formula has no effect on sleeping through. Experts will be along soon to confirm/deny.

Both times I got more proficient at feeding in the night without really waking up which I'm sure is harder if you have to prepare bottles, so don't give up!

Rubirosa · 01/08/2012 19:26

DS slept 8 hours a night from about 8 weeks til 18 weeks. Then slept through occasionally from about 9 months (obviously not ebf by then) and more regularly from 17 months. Now aged 2 (and not at all bf) he sleeps through about half the time.

Routine - about 5 months I got him into a napping routine and his feeds fell in around that.

StetsonsAreCool · 01/08/2012 19:28

From 4 weeks dd slept 10-7. Then she got her sleep regression at 5 months and we were stuffed til she was turned 1. Don't know if that helps or not, sorry Blush

HappyAsASandboy · 01/08/2012 19:33

My DTs are 21 months and have each slept through the night about 10 times over the 21 months. It first happened at about 5 months but then just random nights. They did it on the same night once Grin

Routine wise, I didn't try to force a routine, but we had a recognisable pattern in the evening from about 4 months. At about 5pm if do nappies and pjs, then whenever the next feed happened they fed to sleep.

Reliably predictable day time naps only really happened from about 18 months, though I suspect that's because I was always taking them out to groups etc which involved short car journeys. So they nap for 15 mins in the car, then wake up do the group then nap 15 mins on the way home. I went back to work when they were just over a year, and I think nursery an my mum have provided a stable enough day routine for a reliable nap time to emerge ...

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 01/08/2012 19:40

DD was 8 weeks for 10-6ish (the important bit Wink) and 4mths for 7-7

My DS is 7mths old and did the same but hit 4mth sleep regression and has not yet recovered! He does 8-3.30 sleeps again until 5.30 then properly gets up at 7.

It's not that bad really.

Pascha · 01/08/2012 19:45

DS was a smidgen over 6 months I think. He was certainly not at 5.5months when we were on holiday but very very soon after he stopped waking for night feeds. He was down to 2 feeds around 8 weeks and 1 feed around 4 months I think, though it fluctuated between 1-2 for a few weeks.

notcitrus · 01/08/2012 19:45

Ds was 99% ebf and slept through once at 5 months, then not again until 20 months. He did however only wake for feeding and would be asleep again in under 10 min, and usually only once a night after 8 months.

Dd slept through pretty consistently from 3 to 4.5 months but not since and is nearly 6mo.

By sleeping through I mean approx 8 to 6, not just a random 5 hours or whatever!

xMinerva · 01/08/2012 19:50

Ds1 slept 13hr nights from 4months.

Ds2 slept through 10pm-6/7am at 16months.
Now sleeps 7pm-6/7am at 22 months.

Limelight · 01/08/2012 19:50

Totally depends on the baby and what you mean by sleeping through. If you mean bedtime at 7pm-ish and asleep until 6am-ish, DS was about five months and DD was about 13 months.

BloooCowWonders · 01/08/2012 19:52

Still waiting! (she's nearly 6 :) )

But does eat all food and no breast milk

Downandoutnumbered · 01/08/2012 19:54

Never while he was EBF, I'm afraid - we got the odd night sleeping through after he started on solids, but it wasn't till he was about 18 months that he started reliably sleeping through provided he wasn't ill or teething.

Sighingagain · 01/08/2012 19:57

never, mine are 2 and 4, I breastfed for over 2 years on each, and they dont sleep through, they are sleep monsters.

TheHouseofMirth · 01/08/2012 20:04

DS1 when he was almost 3. I am still waiting for DS2 (3.5) to stop waking up for a snack at 5.30am...

butterflyexperience · 01/08/2012 20:04

Never.....

Only slept through when bf stopped...

Janoschi · 02/08/2012 00:53

DD is 15 months and slept through once. But she has silent reflux and finds it painful sometimes. I think it's going okay if I get 4 nights in a row where she sleeps 8pm-midnight-4am-8am but she often has nights where she's just screaming every 15 minutes.

Make you feel better or worse? Grin

StateofConfusion · 02/08/2012 00:58

Never, she's 3.8yo, she rejected breast feeds from around 1yo and still refuses to sleep.

PotteringAlong · 02/08/2012 01:16

DS is 8 months. I'm up with him now... :)

lilbreeze · 02/08/2012 03:51

Dd1 slept 12 hours a night from just before 4 months. About once a fortnight she'd wake during the night, that's all.

Dd2 didn't sleep through until 18 months.

Dd3 is now almost 3 months old. Waiting to see which one she takes after!!

veeeee · 02/08/2012 03:59

Dd is 9 months, just been in to feed her.

FreelanceMama · 02/08/2012 04:42

Ours is 27 weeks and just started solids. We've had the odd 11pm to 6am spell but never from bedtime to morning.

Up now - asleep at 7.30pm fed at 11.30pm, fed at 4am, hope that's it until 7am.

Routine kept shifting - definitely watch out at 4 month stage. Babies seem to get v interested and distracted during the day which makes feeding and naps hard.

Try reading The No-Cry Sleep Solution if you plan to EBF for 6 months.

Homebird8 · 02/08/2012 05:20

DS1 19 months
DS2 18 months

I realise this isn't what you want to hear but loads of people are attesting to much earlier sleep through times. It didn't really bother me. I just went with it until they didn't wake and want me.

Once past this time, they have always slept through (they're aged 9 and 7 now and they've only had about 5 nightmares each which has ever disturbed that - oh and about the same number of nocturnal vomit episodes).

They now realise that Mummy is much nicer in the morning once she's had a cup of tea and occasionally even make me one.

If you're struggling with sleep my heart goes out to you. I know all about that. But hang onto the assurance that one day things will be different. Smile

NCIS · 02/08/2012 05:29

Mine started to sleep from 10.30 to 5.30am at eight weeks (I was lucky) but my friend changed to formula at seven weeks to get her DD to sleep better and she didn't sleep through until she was five so FF does necessarily equal better nights.

GodisaDj · 02/08/2012 05:37

The magical "sleep through" phrase Wink

Mine doesn't and she turns 1 this month. BF'ing and weaned on solids.

She slept better at 8-15weeks than she's ever done. Sleep regression is a bitch at around 4, 7 and 9 months for us Grin

Routine - dd developed her own pattern around 11 weeks and whilst we were on holiday. Think the sea air tired her out at the same time every day and she kinda stuck with those nap times and bed times

Still waiting for the magic sleep through though and I'm realistic that this isn't going to happen anytime soon. She wakes at night but not always necessarily for boobie milk.
